Isaiah 55:1a

Page Two August 3, 2008 Spiritual Reflection Sometimes we have all the food, clothes, resources, friends and respect we need, but we re still not satisfied. We re still hungry. As Isaiah says in our First Reading this weekend, Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Last weekend we considered the things we invest in as well. We can measure ourselves by society s standards, buy the things the advertisers tell us we should have, dress the way we should, try to live as a trendy or cutting-edge person, and still feel very empty inside. Isaiah goes on to say, Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David. He suggests that our hungers are not satisfied by worldly things, but by our becoming more connected to God. When we listen to God, we can have the life we seek. When we are faithful to the covenant, fullness is ours. As the psalmist tells us, The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. When we rely on our own resources, it s easy for us to begin to believe that we re the ones in charge. We can easily forget the covenant. Our self-reliance and selfsufficiency can trick us into believing that we are the most important. We can put ourselves in God s place. It s easy to see then, why we can feel so empty. When our self-reliance doesn t produce the results we seek, we can easily blame God. As Paul says in our second reading, For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, not any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ, Jesus our Lord. Even when God seems distant, God is not the one who has moved. We can always turn back, admit our dependence on God, seek what we need, and find that God has always been there for us. God could never abandon us. We can learn that easily when we turn back to God. In this weekend s Gospel, Jesus withdraws from the crowds after the death of John the Baptizer. They continue to follow Jesus, and he feels compassion for them. Although he felt the need to fill the emptiness within himself, his love for the people caused him to spend even more time with them. As Matthew says,...his heart was moved to pity for them. As Jesus gave more and more of himself to the crowd, he likely felt his disciples would follow suit and do the same. So he puts them to the test. Even though they didn t have much food, Jesus asked them to give away what they had. They were reluctant, because they knew it wouldn't be enough. We re familiar with the way Jesus blessed the food and asked them to distribute it to the crowds. The disciples were astonished that when all had eaten their fill, there was more left over than they began with. Their own hunger could be satisfied, but only after they d given away all that seemed like it could satisfy that hunger. And so it is with us. We have the opportunity to receive the very Body and Blood of Christ. When we do so, we recall that Jesus gave absolutely everything because of his love for us. We re called then, to go home and do the same thing. This week we can allow ourselves to be broken and poured out as Jesus was. We can feed others as we notice the needs they have. When we forget about ourselves, our own needs, it is then that our hungers are satisfied. MMVI Father Pat Umberger, www.frpat.com CHRYSTUS POKARMEM... Dlaczego przystępujemy do Niego? Pytanie wciąż aktualne. Żydzi do spożyciu cudownego chleba szukali Chrystusa. A my? Z jakiego powodu idziemy do Chrystusa? Dlaczego? A my? Z jakiego motywu pragniemy Go przyjmować? - Ks. Idzi -

I know we are in the middle of the summer and the thoughts of starting a new Religious Education school year may seem a bit premature, but it is never too soon to begin looking ahead. I am glad to welcome back teachers from last year, but we can always use extra help. Who are we looking for? Anyone who has a desire to share their faith and who has a love for children. I think we have a lot of those people in our parish. People who love their faith and their parish and want to bring the Word of God to those who do not attend Catholic school. Why not give it a try? Volunteer as a Catechist or an Aide to help a Catechist. It will make a difference in your life and the lives of the children you teach. Consider it your part in the parish stewardship program giving of your time to help the Church. Won t you help by volunteering as a Cathechist? Page Six August 3, 2008 Welcome, Mrs. Judy Banasiak! Our parish family welcomes our new Religious Education Coordinator, Mrs. Judy Banasiak. In June, Judy retired after 35 years as a full-time teacher in Catholic Schools. Recently, along with her full-time responsibilities, she coordinated an English-Polish Religious Education Program with the assistance of a translator for seven years. The programs she coordinated drew an average of 380 children each year. At St. Priscilla last year, 84 children were enrolled in our Religious Education Program. Under the extremely professional and creative leadership of Judy Banasiak, it is our hope that the program will greatly expand, making it a model for the Northwest side. She will also work in cooperation with our school staff so that the religious educational needs of all of the children of our parish will be served to the fullest. After all of the Masses next weekend, Judy will be in the Addison vestibule to accept registration. If you have school-age children in public schools, please stop by to talk to her and register your children as is your responsibility as Catholic parents. If you have children in St. Priscilla School, please introduce yourself since she will be working for the religious interests of your children as well. Even if you have no children in grammar school, stop by to welcome Judy who is now part of our Parish Pastoral Staff part of our parish family! WELCOME, JUDY!
