It starts out well: O God, I thank you... Gratitude is good. But then it gets into boasting: I am not like the rest of humanity... I fast... I pay tithes (Luke 18:11, 12). It s a Little Jack Horner prayer. Remember the old nursery rhyme that ends with Jack saying, What a good boy am I!? The Pharisee s prayer is all about him and what he does, all the while gauging the distance between himself and the rest of humankind. In contrast, the tax collector stood off at a distance with bowed head, beating his breast and saying, O God, be merciful to me a sinner (18:13). He knows who he is and who God is and what God alone can do for him. No repetitive I, no swelling ego there, just a repentant figure, one who asks to receive what only God can give mercy. Jesus tells this story to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else (18:9). How do we hear it? It acknowledges God who makes us just, that is, who helps us to be in proper relationship with God, with each other, and with all creation. Sirach reminds us that our just God hears the cry of the oppressed, the wail of the orphan, the complaint of the widow, the petition of those who serve God willingly, and the prayer of the lowly. These folks allow room for God to enter their minds and hearts, and then all kinds of things can begin to happen, both within and all around them. James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Parish staff would sincerely like to thank all the parishioners for participating in the Spiritual Adoption Prayer Program which we began last week on October 20th. The response from parishioners was astounding. We had 309 aspirants who dedicated themselves to prayer for the unborn for the next 9 months. Because of your outpouring of love many mothers will be inspired and strengthened to say no to abortion and yes to God s precious gift of life. With God s grace these mothers will have a baby 9 months from now. We know that we might never meet the mother, or the baby who we prayed for, but because of our faith we believe that our prayers will be answered. This is our chance to contribute, to fight the culture of death, and bring life and hope to those who don t have hope any more. As someone said; prayer can move mountains. Let s pray in unity as a parish, and make a difference. Spiritual Adoption Prayer My dear Jesus, together with Mary, mother, who took care of you so lovingly, and of St. Joseph, strong man of faith, protected you both, I pray to you for health of the unborn child, whom I have spiritually adopted. Please give the parents of this child whatever help they need to keep their baby strong and healthy. A wierząc w moc modlitwy i wytrwanie w niej tych, którzy złożyli przyżeczenia za dziewięć miesięcy będziemy witać 309 niemowląt... Dziękujemy wszystkim tym, którzy złożyli przyżeczenia modlitwy w intencji życia dziecka poczętego i jego rodziców. Niech Matka Boża z Guadelupe patronka nowego życia patronka Duchowej Adopcji otacza modlących się za Dzieci Poczęte szczególną opieką. It is a Holy Day of Obligation. An All Souls Day Remembrance The life of a Roman Catholic is marked by remembrances of every kind. At the center of this life is the remembrance of Christ s Sacrifice on the cross, which we memorialize here at the table of the Eucharist each time we gather for Mass. Today as we recall the salvation accomplished for us through Christ s death and resurrection, we remember those who have gone before us and who were marked with the sign of faith. Many of us gather here with hearts heavy with grief. Let us support one another in spirit and ask God to welcome our deceased loved ones into the kingdom of heaven.
