Saint Joseph Basilica October 14, 2018 3 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 14, 2018 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Mark 10:25 Jesus teaches everything the rich young man needs to know about practicing faith. Keep the commandments and then depend totally on the Lord. Material things are used to help others and advance the Gospel. Otherwise, they become the things that hold us back and they end up owning us, not us owning them. What rules do you follow? We all have them, even if we do not write them down or talk about them. There are internal rules we follow that help us make choices, keep order in our lives and help us make sense of our world. Conflicts can happen when rules of well-intentioned people clash and neither one is aware of the rules that the other is following. So, if you had to write down a list of 5 rules to follow in your life, what would they be? Does your spouse agree with you, or does he/she offer some other rules to consider? Faith and religion have rules and some are easier to follow than others. But these rules help us keep order, maintain our identity and fulfill the commands of God to grow in holiness. Measure your faith by the rules you keep and those you don t. You might settle a few struggles or learn something new. Maybe you will even bring a little more peace to your soul. OCTOBER ROSARY MONTH The month of October is traditionally the Month of the Rosary. We will have a rosary devotion every day during the month of October: Weekdays at 7pm (bilingual), Saturdays at 3:30pm before the 4pm Mass (English), and Sundays after the 11am Mass (Polish). This is a great opportunity for our parish family to begin saying the rosary not only in church but also at home. Our Blessed Mother requested in her apparitions in Fatima to say the rosary for the intention of world peace. We need prayer for peace in the world and in our families. Let s begin now, as October is a perfect opportunity. ANNIVERSARY OF BASILICA The 20th anniversary of elevating St. Joseph Church to the dignity of basilica by Pope Saint John Paul II brings personal memories and gratitude for recognition of the parish. The title basilica is bestowed by the Holy Father for a particular church because of its meaning and significance to a group of people or its historical importance. The church must also have an imposing structure and appropriate liturgical arrangements. Saint Joseph Church was the first Polish American parish in New England and meets the many Vatican requirements. A majority of us remember the beautiful ceremony on Oct. 5th, 1998, including the reading of the Pope s decree in Latin, and the blessing of the stone to perpetuate the special event. This weekend, we will remember this event at every Mass which for so many years as enriched the spirituality of the parish in the region. Let us use this occasion to strengthen our bond with the successor of Saint Peter, Pope Francis. VOTIVE MASS AND NOVENA TO ST. VOTING AND THE COMMON GOOD Excerpts from The Civic Duty of Catholics toward the Common Good By Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke The Church teaches that we have an obligation, in justice, to vote, because the welfare of the community depends upon the persons elected and appointed to office, and this includes: life, marriage, and the family. We are morally obliged to vote for a worthy candidate. Careful consideration must be given to the positions for which he or she stands. The Baltimore Catechism gives a good summary of the Church s teaching regarding the duty to vote, in its response to Question 246, How does a citizen show a sincere interest in his country s welfare? : (a) Citizens should exercise the right to vote. This is a moral obligation when the common good of the state or the good of religion, especially in serious matters, can be promoted. (b) Citizens should vote for the candidates who in their judgment are best qualified to discharge the duties of public office. Mere personal gain or friendship does not justify one s voting for a candidate. It would be sinful to cast a ballot for one who, in the judgment of the voters, would do grave public harm. If one candidate alone upholds the moral law in its integrity, then the decision to vote for him or her is clear. When all candidates for a particular office fail, in some regard, to support the moral law and thus foster the common good in its entirety, some Catholics simply decide not to vote at all. The decision not to vote at all, however, fails to take responsibility for any advancement of the common good and is in fact a form of voting. Sharing Our Blessings is a 5-week, parish-based opportunity for parishioners to reflect on their role as stewards of the parish. The essence of Christian Stewardship is offering thanks to God for the blessings he has bestowed on us and sharing those blessings with others in Christian charity through our parish. To commemorate the occasion, we will pray a three day novena starting on Saturday October 19th after all Masses. His relics will be on the altar for the faithful to venerate. Since His Holiness blessed the icon of our Lady of Czestochowa in the Blessed Mother Chapel, we will place the photographs of this historical event next to the icon for viewing. It is important during the October time of the rosary to reflect on the connection to the saint of our time and the role of the Blessed Mother in our spiritual development. THANK YOU! Saint Joseph Basilica October 14, 2018 5 BLESSING OF THE PETS On Thursday, October 5 th, students and families of St. Joseph School came together to mark the feast of St. Francis of Assisi with the blessing of their pets. St. Francis of Assisi was a 13 th -century friar and preacher who is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment. In honor of his memory and his love for all of God s creations, families bring their pets to church for a special ceremony referred to as the Blessing of the Animals. Animal lovers can bless their pets using the prayer which asks God: Reach out with your right hand and grant that these animals may serve our needs and that your bounty in the resources of this life may move us to seek more confidently the goal of eternal life. The celebration is always a memorable event for the St. Joseph School students. This year, children and parents gathered in the schoolyard with their dogs, cats, hamsters, lizards and fish - which were all blessed by the Associate Pastor, Rev. Grzegorz Chodkowski. THANK YOU!!!! DWUDZIESTA ÓSMA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA 14 października 2018 Łatwiej jest wielbłądowi przejść przez ucho igielne, niż bogatemu wejść do królestwa Bożego. (Mk 10, 25). Mądrość boska została dana ludziom przez słowo Boga, które jest jej pewnym przekaźnikiem. Jego cechy przedstawia drugie czytanie (Hbr 4, 12-13). Żywe jest słowo Boż e, skuteczne i ostrzejsze niż wszelki miecz obosieczny, przenikające aż do rozdzielenia duszy i ducha... zdolne osądzać pragnienia i myśli serca (tamże 12). Kto chce dać się prowadzić mądrości boskiej, powinien rozważać słowo Boże, zgodzić się, by ono przenikając serce oświecało je i oczyszczało, sądziło i pobudzało, by serce mogło odrzucać wszystko, co nie jest ze słowem zgodne. Nie można pozostać obojętnym wobec słowa Bożego; ono zobowiązuje człowieka, aby się opowiedział za lub przeciw niemu, a zatem, by okazał, czym jest wewnątrz. ROCZNICA BAZYLIKI Dwudziesta rocznica wyniesienia Kościoła św. Józefa do godności Bazyliki przez papieża św. Jana Pawła II przywołuje osobiste wspomnienia i wdzięczność za docenienie naszej parafii. Tytuł Bazylika jest przyznawana przez Ojca Świętego dla danego kościoła ze względu na jego znaczenie dla grupy wiernych lub ze względu na historyczną wartość. Budynek świątyni musi również mieć odpowiednia architekturę i liturgię. Kościół św. Józefa był pierwszą polskoamerykańską parafią w Nowej Anglii i spełniał liczne wymagania Stolicy Apostolskiej.
