It was written some 15 or so years ago during the parish s 125th anniversary. Do you think it still applies? Do you think some changes are needed? Do you still see us as a community? Are we guided by a Franciscan spirit (as in pope Francis, St. Francis or the Franciscans who served here for a hundred some years or Francis Cardinal Spellman??? ) (please refer to last Sunday s second reading before you answer this one) Is our life centered around worship (are you a liturgical minister, i.e., reader, Eucharistic minister, choir member, server, usher, greeter??) evangelization (do you live the Gospel of Joy when you leave this building and encounter other human beings??? How about while you are inside this building? How about in the parking lot???), education (do you support our efforts at educating ALL children, regardless of their color, race, religion or ethnicity???)and community (do you do anything here other than possibly show up on Sunday to catch up on gossip??) Really? Do you honestly see all these things? Are you a part of them? Have we changed? For the better? For the Worse? Something for us to think about. Perhaps this thought process will carry over into next week s meeting stemming from the work of the stewardship committee. Even if the above comments stir some discussion, it will be a good thing. Where are we as a parish in the cold Winder of 2014? Where are we going? Where do you see yourself fitting into this process? David Krakowski

4 Enrich Your Life and Enhance Our Parish Life Monday, February 10 th! This is the third of four invitations being extended to all parishioners to come to a special meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 10 th in the grade school all purpose room for presentations by Terri Preskar and Terrie Baldwin from the Diocesan Offices of Stewardship and Evangelization. Come and hear how being good stewards and sharing the joy of the Good News can help you achieve more fulfillment in your personal and spiritual life. Come and enjoy each other s company, enjoy some good refreshments, and enjoy what we will learn together and the personal, practical take-aways from the evening! IMMACULATE HEART WINTER FESTIVAL Saturday, February 8th, from 5-10PM, why not go over a few blocks and join the fun at our neighboring parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary? Their community will be celebrating a Winter Festival with lots of great food (gołąbki dinners) and pastries as well as other traditional foods (kielbasa, hot doggies, Lansing style pierogi etc.). A raffle will also take place with a first prize of $1500 as well as many smaller prize amounts. Don t know how to get there? Just follow the rays from brightest pieróg in the sky! (Lansing between East 71st and 65th) Where is Elmo (Fr. Joseph)??? In Rzeszów???? The image above by Piotr Stachiewicz ( ) shows snow- covered homes in dim light. The people inside their homes are afraid of the hungry wolves on rampage outside the poor village. The legend relates that Mary, the Mother of God of the Blessed Thunder Candle (Matka Boska Gromniczna), watches over the people on cold February nights. With her thunder candle she wards off the ravenous pack and protects the peasants from all harm. According to an old tradition, candles are blessed in Catholic churches on February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. Many people keep the blessed candles (Gromnica) in their homes and light them during storms or other danger. In Poland, dying persons are given the Gromnica to light their way to eternity DON T FORGET YOUR GIFT CARDS...they help fund our parish ministries! And they make people HAPPY!

Cardinal Dziwisz will dedicate our version of this shrine right here on Thursday, May 15th, 2014, during the first official third Thursday Mass commemorating the newly canonized, St. John Paul II. We want this new shrine to be another jewel in the crown of our parish, something which will inspire the thousands of guests who visit here each year. MASS INTENTIONS You may have noticed an recent abundance of Masses for the Priest s Intention. That means nobody from the parish chose to have a Mass said for their special intention. If we need to fill these vacancies in the future we may open our books to other parish communities who need Masses said for their parishioners personal intentions. TRANSFIGURATION SCHOLARSHIP Families of Slavic European ethnic heritage, i.e., Polish, Czech, Slovak, Ukrainian and the like may be eligible for the Transfiguration Scholarship for their children attending a Catholic elementary, high school or college in the school year. Families must be parishioners of either St. Stanislaus or IHM to qualify and the financial need of the family must be assessed through the Private School Aid Service application available from the Catholic School principal or pastor. The student needn t be a top scholar, but must be in good academic standing. Those interested in applying may find the necessary paperwork at the rectory office. Deadline for submitting applications is March 1st, As a reminder, families already receiving State tuition vouchers are not eligible for this program. 6 "Odpowiadajcie Mu zatem miłością na miłość i nigdy nie zapominajcie o Tym, którego miłość do was pchnęła aż do śmierci" św. Małgorzata Maria Pierwsze piątki miesiąca Eucharystia - Sakrament Miłości - zajmuje istotne miejsce w kulcie Serca Jezusowego. "Masz w każdy pierwszy piątek miesiąca przyjmować Mnie w Komunii świętej." - powiedział siostrze Małgorzacie Marii Jezus podczas trzeciego objawienia. W trakcie objawień Pan Jezus przekazał francuskiej siostrze XVIIwiecznej mistyczce Małgorzacie Mari Alacoque, przyrzeczenia skierowane do czcicieli Jego Serca. Zakonnica opisała je w listach. Po jej śmierci rozproszone informacje zebrano w słynne 12 obietnic a najważniejsze to: 1.Dam im wszystkie łaski potrzebne w ich stanie. 2.Zgoda i pokój będą panowały w ich rodzinach. 3.Będę ich pocieszał we wszystkich ich strapieniach. 4.Będę ich bezpieczną ucieczką za życia, a szczególnie przy śmierci. 5.Wyleję obfite błogosławieństwa na wszystkie ich przedsięwzięcia. 6.Błogosławić będę domy, w których obraz mego Serca będzie umieszczony i czczony. Przyrzekam w nadmiarze miłosierdzia Serca mojego, że wszechmocna miłość moja udzieli tym wszystkim, którzy komunikować będą w pierwsze piątki przez dziewięć miesięcy z rzędu, łaskę pokuty ostatecznej, że nie umrą w stanie niełaski mojej ani bez sakramentów i że Serce moje stanie się dla nich bezpieczną ucieczką w godzinę śmierci. Odpowiadając na apel Pana Jezusa od grudnia wprowadziliśmy w naszej parafii nabożeństwa pierwszopiątkowe. Msza święta jest o 7 p.m., a po niej adoracja Najświętszego Sakramentu. Pół godziny przed mszą od 6.30 p.m. jest możliwość skorzystania z sakramentu pokuty. Zapraszamy do licznego udziału w tym nabożeństwie wynagradzającym Sercu Jezusa za nasze grzechy i całego świata. Gromnica! Już sama ta nazwa mówi że świeca ta chroni od gromów. Gdy czarne chmury latem nadchodzą ze wszystkich stron, gdy błyskawice rozdzierają niebo, gdy groźne pomruki burzy przeszywają człowieka trwogą, ręka chrześcijanina zapala gromnicę i stawia ją przed obrazem Bogurodzicy, a z ust wydobywają się błagalne słowa: "Pod Twoją obronę uciekamy się święta Boża Rodzicielko..." Szczególnie rzewny i chwytający za serce jest motyw podań ludowych o Matce Bożej Gromnicznej, która pod płaszcz swej przemożnej opieki bierze wszystkie sieroty, a zwłaszcza te, których matki pomarły trzymając w stygnącej dłoni zapaloną gromnicę. Umiera człowiek, kończy się jego ziemska wędrówka, przy jego łożu gromadzi się rodzina. Umierający, wyrazem swych oczu, daje znać, że czegoś chce i każdy wie, o co prosi, i w stygnącą już dłoń podają mu zapaloną gromnicę. Jest powszechna wiara, że z tym światłem lżej człowiekowi umierać. Cała rodzina modli się o to, by światło to było dla umierającego odbiciem światła doskonałego, jakim jest Chrystus przyjmujący swego wiernego sługę. Płomień świecy jest jak by przedłużeniem tchnienia człowieka u bram wieczności, jest świadectwem jego wiernej służby Bogu. Człowiek w tej trudnej dla siebie chwili staje się spokojniejszy, znika gorycz przeżytych lat, giną w morzu niepamięci doznane krzywdy i upokorzenia, niestraszny jest lęk przed osądem Bożym. W serce wstępuje ufność, że u jego łoża stoi Pani Gromniczna, by swego wiernego czciciela przeprowadzić przez bramę śmierci ze światłem gromnicy w ręku. Pragnieniem każdego Polaka było i jest umierać z gromnicą w dłoni, z tą szczególną świecą, uzdalniającą do walki ze złem, z szatanem, bo duch ciemności nie lubi światła
