September 4, 2011 23rd Ordinary Sunday Page Four LITURGICAL PARTICIPATION N ot all members of the parish community will have the time, energy, strength, or ability to serve in these roles. However, individuals must be careful not to excuse themselves too easily. What is important is that all understand that the celebration of Liturgy is not just the responsibility of the pastor, although he is delegated by the bishop to oversee the liturgical life of the parish. Pas- tors need the help of people who are serious about living out their baptismal right and responsibility to worship. THE ROLE OF THE BAPTIZED This catalog of specialized roles might give the impres- sion that those who are not exercising one of these roles are free to sit back passively and simply let the Liturgy happen around them. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those who come together for Liturgy do not have the luxury of acting as spectators, waiting for all to be done for them. Full, conscious, and active participa- tion in the Liturgy (as commended by the Second Vati- can Council) is not only their right but also their duty and their responsibility. That responsibility includes full engagement throughout the liturgical celebration. The baptized faithful who form the congregation are called to join in praise and thanksgiving in song and spoken word, to listen attentively to God s Word, and to exercise their baptismal priesthood in prayer for the Church, the world, and all in need during the General Intercessions. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist the baptized faithful join their prayer to that of the priest celebrant, offering Christ the Victim, not only by means of the hands of the priest but also together with him, and offer themselves as well (GIRM, no. 95). Their participation culminates in the reception of the Body and Blood of the Lord, the sacrament that unites them more fully with Christ their Head and with one another. We need to be aware, there- fore, that participation does not refer primarily to exter- nal activity or function during the celebration of Mass; rather, it refers to a deeply spiritual, interior participation of mind and heart, filled with devotion and penetrating the very depths of the mysteries we celebrate. In their sincere efforts to participate, those present minister to the priest celebrant, to others who serve in liturgical roles, and to one another. Their attention and active engagement in the celebration can draw from the priest celebrant and the other ministers the best they have to offer. Their enthusiastic song and verbal responses made with conviction can encourage others to sing and respond; their very presence at the celebra- tion of Mass when so many other enticing options might have been chosen instead supports and reinforces others who have made the same choice. The Liturgy, then, is about the action of God s own people, each with different offices and roles. When we play our roles in the Liturgy with our bodies, minds, and hearts fully engaged, we make to God a perfect sacrifice of praise. to be continued... Dear Parishioners, Earlier this year I mentioned that I was participating in a review of my Priestly Ministry, which is conducted by the Archdiocesan Office of Ministerial Evaluation. This is a process to evaluate and improve my work as a priest. Parishioners at large, the pastoral staff, and parish leaders were asked to be part of the review team. I thank all those who returned their candid responses to the survey. Overall, the comments were strongly affirming and grateful for my pasturing. The comments also suggested areas for further development. After the data was gathered and collated I met with a priest colleague who reviewed the data with me. Your responses and these meetings have given me solid material to pray over and help form a Development Plan and set goals for the future. This is a summary of that feedback under the headings of Areas of Strength, Recommendations, and Goals. Areas of strength: Focuses parish to Eucharist as center of attention More devotional liturgies and prayer services during the week; added 6:30AM commuter Mass in English as well as 7:00PM Mass in Polish, as well as daily confessions heard in English and Polish each day (6:30PM 7:00PM, extended Eucharistic adoration to all day on Thursdays (8:00AM 8:00PM) Fosters spiritual growth and adherence to church rules and policies Caring; involved in parish life; open to suggestions Manages finances with good understanding Made many repaired and restorations to church, chapel and parish buildings and maintenance of church, buildings, including taking care of grounds (flowers) Visible and supportive of grade school, high school, polish school and school of religion Willing to take on high school Works hard on the spiritual life of the parish Connects the school to a very active parish/events Outstanding service to sick, handicapped; sacraments for shut ins; and responding immediately to parishioners in need of help Leads by example, friendly and affirming, has huge challenges and handles them well Principal recommendations for growth: Work on a young adult group (20 40) Continue to look at ways to unite the parish and keep balance between ethnic groups through communication and celebration of cultural traditions of a diverse ethnic community Continue to find ways to invite/involve more parishioners in events and activities Communicate to parish how priests and sisters are involved in teaching and visiting classrooms Goals for this next year: Differentiating the music ministry to reflecting different ages/congregations attending each Mass Focus on Teens and Young Adults through development of 5:00PM Mass and TORCH (Teenagers of our Church Group) Involve Pastoral Council in the development and parish leadership in the review of the strategic pastoral plan for St. Ferdinand Parish: Reflect Christ s Light Review and identify ways to communicate all ethnic groups and worship communities equally in all aspects of the parish, i.e.: bulletin, website, posters, etc. Again, thanks to all who participated in this review process. Your positive feedback and recommendations for growth just confirm my gratitude for having the privilege to spend these years of my priesthood at St. Ferdinand. Rozwodu nie będzie Pan Jezus powiedział o wypadku nierządu: "Słyszeliście, że powiedziano przodkom: Kto chce oddalić swą żonę, niech jej da list rozwodowy. A Ja powiadam wam: Każdy, kto oddala swą żonę -poza wypadkiem nierządu - narażają na cudzołóstwo" (Mt 5, 31n). Zatem był możliwy rozwód. Czemu Kościół interpretuje, że Pan Jezus zakazał rozwodów? Przez wieki tak wielu królów, możnych i pobożnych chciało rozwodów, że gdyby Kościół mógł się zgodzić na rozwody, to by się już dawno zgodził. Słowa Biblii są tu nie do przekręcenia, "stety" i niestety. Nasz Zbawiciel wyraźnie stwierdził, że Mojżeszowe pozwolenie na rozwód było pewnym złem koniecznym, uleganiem zatwardziałości ludzkich serc (Mt 19,8). Stary Testament wychowywał do monogamii. Przykładem było zawsze małżeństwo Abrahama i Sary i wiele biblijnych wezwań, np.: "Używaj życia z niewiastą, którąś ukochał, po wszystkie dni marnego twego życia" (Koh 9,9). Pan Jezus wyraźnie umieścił swoją naukę o nierozerwalności w małżeństwie, kiedy w Kazaniu na Górze ustanawiał Nowy Testament. Nowo testamentalny plan Boży zakłada, że mężczyzna nie porzuca żony. Jest bowiem w małżeństwie znakiem IMIGRANCI IMIGRANTOM Biuro ds. Imigracji i Edukacji Imigracyjnej Archidiecezji zaprasza do uczestnictwa w zajęciach przygotowujących do podjęcia funkcji liderów parafialnych programu Imigranci imigrantom. Chrystusa, i tak jak Chrystus nie zostawia Kościoła mimo jego słabości, tak i mąż nie zostawia żony. Małżeństwo ze swojej natury i z woli Bożej powinno być nierozerwalne. Według tradycji Kościoła katolickiego, klauzula o wypadku nierządu odnosi się do dwóch sytuacji. Po pierwsze: kiedy małżonkowie żyją na kocią łapę, czyli uprawiają nierząd nie będąc małżeństwem. Pan Jezus wspomniał o takim związku w rozmowie z Samarytanką: "A ten, którego masz teraz, nie jest twoim mężem" (J 4, 18). Chodzi o sytuację braku małżeństwa albo nieważności małżeństwa. Po drugie: chrześcijanin nie może się zgadzać na życie w trójkącie. Stanowi to bezczeszczenie świętości małżeństwa. Gdyby np. żona nie chciała zrezygnować z cudzołożnego związku z innym mężczyzną, mężowi nie wolno tego tolerować. Powinno, po potrzebnych prośbach, staraniach i ostrzeżeniach, dojść do separacji z małżonką i oczekiwania męża w modlitwie i pokucie na poprawę sytuacji i odejście żony od grzechu. Taką interpretację słów Chrystusa potwierdzają tzw. najstarsze świadectwa chrześcijańskie oraz listy św. Pawła: "Tym zaś, którzy trwają w związkach małżeńskich, nakazuję nie ja, lecz Pan: żona niech nie odchodzi od swego męża. Gdyby zaś odeszła, niech pozostanie samotną albo niech się pojedna ze swym mężem" (1 Kor 7,10 11). "Żona związana jest tak długo, jak długo żyje jej małżonek. Abruzja, 30 sierpnia, 2011 Krucjata Różańcowa w intencji Ojczyzny Największym obecnie problemem Polski jest sytuacja duchowa i moralna, dlatego istnieje ogrmna potrzeba omadlania Polski. Dla wierzących obywateli, losy ojczyzny nie mogą być obojętne. Zachęcamy do włączenia się do Krucjaty Różańcowej, której centrala mieści się w Niepokalanowie. Wystarczy jeden dziesiątek różańca codziennie w tej intencji. Piotra. Oznacza to, że jest ono odtąd w sposób wyjątkowy związany z bazyliką watykańską. Przywilej ten nadał mu specjalnym dekretem archiprezbiter bazyliki św. Piotra kard. Angelo Comastri. Zaś Penitencjaria Apostolska zatwierdziła odpusty zupełne, które będzie można uzyskać w tej świątyni pod zwyczajnymi warunkami przy następujących okazjach: w Uroczystość Świętych Apostołów Piotra i Pawła, w rocznicę poświęcenia bazyliki watykańskiej, w rocznicę wyboru Papieża, raz w roku w dowolnie wybranym przez wiernego dniu oraz zawsze ilekroć większa grupa pielgrzymów pobożnie nawiedza sanktuarium. Sanktuarium bł. Jana Pawła II w San Pietro della Jenca to średniowieczny kościółek, który niegdyś należał prawdopodobnie do większego kompleksu klasztornego. Porzucony przez mnichów, stał się kapliczką górskich pasterzy. Jan Paweł II często udawał się tam na modlitwę w czasie swych potajemnych wycieczek w góry. 11 maja tego roku, a zatem zaledwie kilka dni po beatyfikacji, arcybiskup pobliskiej L Aquili ustanowił w kościółku diecezjalne sanktuarium Jana Pawła II. 7 sierpnia kard. Stanisław Dziwisz osobiście przekazał mu relikwię krwi błogosławionego Papieża. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) Although I ve read many of his works, I don t really know Shakespeare, so when I was in grad school chasing down an MA in English Composition a few of years ago, I thought I d brush up on the Bard by taking a 400 level Shakespeare class as an elective. According to the course catalogue, however, if I hadn t already completed a handful of Shakespeare classes (which I had not), I needed to clear my registration with the professor. Figuring this d just be a formality, I gave him a call to get the high sign, but that s when the guy threw me a curveball that I couldn t touch. He told me no. And he elaborated He told me I d flounder with no previous Shakespeare. He told me I d slow the class down. He told me he didn t have time to bring me up to speed. In truth, I was taken back a bit by it all. I started to put up a fight, but seeing that my argument was going nowhere, I retreated. In retrospect, I don t think I would have impressed the guy or gained entrance into his class even had I begun singing the only Shakespeare I knew at the time: from Hamlet, Polonius counsel to his son Laertes (as sung by the Skipper to Marianne) to the tune of Carmen s The Toreador Song in an old Gilligan s Island episode. Neither a borrower nor a lender be/ Do not forget: stay out of debt/ Think twice, and take this good advise from me/ Guard that old solvency/ There s just one other thing/ you ought to do/ to thine own self be true. In truth, I ve been singing this on and off in my head for decades now. Catchy melody, you know? But sage counsel, too, and counsel which I ve sung so many times to my son that he knows it as well. At least the first couple of lines. I can t recall how the performance worked out for Gilligan and Ginger and the rest of the castaways, but that individual song was memorable to me, and as I consider today s readings, I see that the words are still true. In his letter to the Romans, Paul begins, Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. It always comes down to love. Per Ezekiel, if you warn the wicked, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself. Love drives the warning. Per Jesus himself, If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone, and where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. If we are gathered in his name, our relationships are Godly. If our relationships are Godly, we are grounded in love. If we are grounded in love, we have fulfilled the law. In the context of today s readings, therefore, I could have rewritten Hamlet, The Musical as Never be owing anyone a thing/ Just give your love, cause love is king/ All those commandments fit a single shelf:/ Love your neighbor as self/ There s just one other thing/ you ought to do/ to God above be true.
