Idleness is the enemy of the soul. St. Benedict FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 8, 2009 (The Lord) tells the number of the stars and calls them by name. Psalm 147:4 Tireless Discipleship. The Gospel of Mark has no infancy narrative, nor does it have a lengthy prologue to introduce it. In Mark s account, one could say, Jesus hits the ground running. The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, He tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, He is also telling the early church, and He is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed...he told them, Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come. (Mark 1:35, 38). In today s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to doing all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. Yet Jesus also makes time to be alone in prayer. It is only through prayer, through spending time with God, that any of us can find the strength to do all that God wishes us to do. Be sure to find time this week to be with God. According to recent research among the dioceses charitable giving to the Church remains the same despite bad economic times. Could it be that those who are supporting our churches are not those who live by the ups and downs of a stock portfolio? Maybe we are surviving on many widows mites. Yet when we look across the pews each Sunday we see that our members come from every income bracket. EVANGELIZATION According to the Gallup poll more and more Americans consider religion a very important factor in their lives. In the 1970's many people left the Catholic Church, now they are returning in large numbers, around 320,000 annually. Someone said that the Church is hard to get out of your system because it is dealing with values which no one else can offer. Many people in our country and in our parish substituted true religion with cultural trends. The Parish Council is determined and committed to reach out for the next couple of weeks by telephone to those who for some unknown reason have drifted from the Church. We ask you to pray to the Holy Spirit for the success of our efforts. JAN KARSKI A play written about Jan Karski, a hero of the Polish resistance to the Nazis, will be previewed on April 20, 21 and 22, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hibernian Cultural Centre, 19 Temple Street, Worcester. Mr. Karski is often referred to as the man who tried to stop the Holocaust. A skilled diplomat, and adept linguist with a photographic memory, he joined the Underground Home army as soon as war broke out in 1939. For more information please contact Father Ryszard.. KRONIKA PARAFIALNA 5 NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA W obecnym roku liturgicznym podczas Mszy Świętych czytamy ewangelię wg Świętego Marka. To najkrótsza ewangelia, ale, zgodnie z zamierzeniem autora, bardzo dobrze ukazuje kim naprawdę jest Chrystus. Święty Marek stara się przekonać swoich czytelników, że Chrystus jest prawdziwym Bogiem, Mesjaszem. Stąd tak dużo miejsca w jego ewangelii zajmują opisy cudów, uzdrowień, których zwykły człowiek nie mógłby dokonać. Dzisiaj, po raz kolejny jesteśmy świadkami cudownych uzdrowień: Jezus uzdrowił teściową Piotra, a potem wielu innych chorych i opętanych przez złe duchy. W dzisiejszej ewangelii widzimy też Jezusa, który oddala się na miejsce ciche i pustynne, aby się modlić. Poprzez swoją postawę, uczy nas, że pośród zwykłych codziennych obowiązków powinniśmy znajdować czas na modlitwę, rozmowę z Bogiem, bo z niej czerpiemy siłę do dobrego życia. W modlitwie otwórzmy nasze serca na łaskę Chrystusa, która ma moc uzdrawiać również nasze choroby i zniewolenia. NOWA EWANGELIZACJA Wielkim orędownikiem nowej ewangelizacji był papież Jan Paweł II. Zależało mu bardzo na tym, aby docierać do tych ludzi, którzy zagubili się w wierze i odeszli od Kościoła. Ojciec Święty powtarzał, że nowa ewangelizacja to zadanie całego Kościoła, a więc duchownych i świeckich. Rada parafialna naszej parafii zamierza w najbliższym czasie podjąć to zadanie. Jeżeli znamy w naszym środowisku kogoś, kto chciałby porozmawiać z księdzem, lub przedstawicielem Rady Parafialnej, a sam nie ma odwagi o to poprosić, dajmy znać na plebanię. Chodzi o naszą wspólną troskę o tę cząstkę Kościoła, którą stanowimy jako parafia. Karski, które będzie wystawiane w Worcester w Hibernian Cultural Centre, 19 Temple St, w dniach 20, 21, 22 kwietnia 2009 roku o godz. 7:30 p.m. Jan Karski (1914-2000) był wielkim patriotą, w czasie wojny był kurierem i świadkiem niemieckich mordów na ludności cywilnej, zwłaszcza żydowskiego pochodzenia. Jak kurier dotarł między innymi do USA, gdzie spotkał się z prezydentem, ale jego opowieści o prześladowaniach i mordach w Polsce nie zrobiły na przywódcach światowych większego wrażenia. Traktowali je jako niewiarygodne. Dopiero po oswobodzeniu obozów zagłady przekonali się, że Karski miał rację. Pierwsze przedstawienie, w dniu 20 kwietnia będzie połączone ze spotkaniem z aktorami.
