The readings today speak of the end of the world and the coming of the kingdom. The bishops' pastoral on stewardship says clearly that "life to come' is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now." May our good stewardship help us to be numbered among the chosen on the last day. PHASE III This weekend we received 81903 for Phase III. We now have 118 donors, $37,608.17 in cash received, and $2650 due in pledges. When all pledges are paid we will have received $40,258.17 We owe a special debt of gratitude to those parishioners who have faithfully supported this project. The walkways are nearly complete. The work was done by the Bomfim Construction Co. of Framingham MA. We regret that we did not have enough funds to do the sidewalks in front of the church but we do plan to continue this work next year. We are grateful to Kevin Rekowski who has worked tirelessly to remove the old concrete and the boulders, and replace the blocked basins and broken pipes on the side of the church. THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME November 15, 2009 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. - Mark 13:31 Encouragement. This Sunday's Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus' teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel's time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ's love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. A second collection will not be taken this weekend. Next weekend the second collection is designated for the Campaign for Human Development. FOR YOUR REFLECTION During the last few months we witnessed a heated discussion in Congress on Health Care. Although we all agree that health care reform is needed the present proposal is not. It will cut Medicare and therefore deny services for the elderly who depend on it. It is proposed that counseling will be offered to the elderly to determine what tests, at what age are needed. This might encourage the current practice in many countries that if you are over seventy treatments are discouraged. Secondly, you can fight insurance companies but you cannot reason with anonymous government agencies who will determine incontestably what is good for you. This opens wide the door for selective treatment and enormous abuses and serious personal expenses. We should contact our democratic congressmen and senators to voice your objections before it is too late. CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT For nearly 40 years the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has worked to empower low-income families and individuals. Since 1970, it has funded community groups that create affordable housing, obtain fair wages, provide job training, and support other projects in which the poor implement their own solutions to the problems they face. This year's theme is Families are struggling, Faith is calling. As more Americans feel the weight of the economic crisis, CC HD needs your support in next week's collection more than ever. Bishop McManus writes "I urge you to give generously to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development next weekend. We commit 75% of the donations to the national office to support their projects across the country. RECOGNITION BANQUET On Friday, November 6thi, Mr. Richard Nowak, a graduate of St. Joseph School, was publicly honored by the alumni, parents, students, and our parishioners for his extra-ordinary generosity on behalf of the children of St. Joseph School. He said "My whole life was filled with metrics, numbers and investments, but at this time I am looking for a return on an asset of some young wonderful children who are yet to come to St. Joseph School." This statement clearly describes his priorities, goals and ideology which is peripeated by faith, sharing and caring. The invited guests such as Bishop McManus, Dr. Delma Josephson, superintendent of Catholic Schools in the diocese of Worcester reminisced when Religious Sisters staffed the Catholic schools and challenged their mind, formed their character, strengthened their Catholic identify. The scarcity of Sisters diluted that spirit, however, at St. Joseph the influence of the Felician Sisters produced many famous and dedicated individuals like Mr. Nowak, 38 Religious, and 18 priests. Sr. Jeanne with ten students prepared a very sophisticated and personal poetry presentation to Mr. Nowak which, once again, reflects the quality of teaching at St. Joseph School. About 220 people enthusiastically greeted Mr. and Mrs. Nowak whose generous gift inspired many others to follow in his footsteps. At the present time, the Fund for the gym stands at $1.5 million dollars. I thank all of you who not only came to thank Mr. Nowak but at the same time to show your support, enthusiasm and pride in your school. (Please refer to the local newspapers for additional coverage.) KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS The Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Basilica Council 412980, would like to thank everyone who participated in the October 50150 raffle for their generosity. The Knights collected a total of $2,660. The winning ticket was purchased by the Holy Rosary Society and they received $1,330. The Knights plan to hold another raffle in March. For the past 6 years, the Knights have collected to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys to help those in need. We are pleased to do this again. The weekend of November 14th and 15th, we will be collecting at the back of our church after each Mass. Friday night's temperatures dipped to 27 degrees, while Saturday night seemed warm at 37 degrees. The teenagers watched a video on homelessness and had great discussions about the subject and how we can help. A reporter from the Catholic Free Press showed up both Friday night and Saturday morning to interview the students and learn about their experience. We collected bags of coats, hats, gloves etc. to be dispersed to those in need in the area. Mr. Valcour treated the kids each morning to a warm pancake breakfast.
