EUCHARISTIC ADORATION One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, that I might gaze on the loveliness of the Lord... Visit Jesus, the Son of God, in Eucharistic Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration takes place in our parish every Tuesday beginning after the 8:15 a.m. English Mass. Benediction is at 6:45 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Mass in Polish. Adoration will also take place every First Friday of the Month. January 28 - St. Thomas Aquinas By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor. At five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino in his parents hopes that he would choose that way of life and eventually became abbot. In 1239 he was sent to Naples to complete his studies. It was here that he was first attracted to Aristotle s philosophy. By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family s plans for him and joined the Dominicans, much to his mother s dismay. On her order, Thomas was captured by his brother and kept at home for over a year. Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished his studies with Albert the Great. He held two professorships at Paris, lived at the court of Pope Urban IV, directed the Dominican schools at Rome and Viterbo, combated adversaries of the mendicants, as well as the Averroists, and argued with some Franciscans about Aristotelianism. His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human knowledge, pervades his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the Creator, and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished. The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work on it after celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. When asked why he stopped writing, he replied, I cannot go on... All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me. He died March 7, 1274 He is the patron saint of catholic schools and students. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Third in Ordinary Time - Reflecting on God s Word The imagery of light in the darkness threads its way through the s of Ordinary Time between Christmas and Lent. It reminds us that the Light of the World, whose dawning we celebrated during the Advent/Christmas season, is the same light of Christ whose flame will purify and enlighten us during Lent and enkindle the fire of the Holy Spirit in us during the fifty days of Easter. This week our first reading likens the salvation of the District of the Gentiles to light dispelling darkness, anguish, and gloom. Matthew s Gospel characterizes Jesus as a light arising in Galilee of the Gentiles, beckoning the fishermen to join together in following him along the way. COMING IN FEBRUARY Mark Your Calendars GOD STRONG FAMILY THE STRENGTH OF POLONIA The First Family Congress of Polonia in Chicago from February 15 to March 2, 2014. The Congress is organized by the Strong Family Foundation in cooperation with the Office for Family Ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean face many challenges when it comes to sharing their faith; yet, the light always shines through and hope arises. In the Diocese of San Miguel, El Salvador, the youth of Holy Family Parish are at high risk for violence and gang activity. In response, the parish designed a youth enrichment and leadership program to address young people s need for critical-thinking skills and values education. The parish hopes to help the youth living in these highvulnerability areas create a culture of solidarity and peace within their neighborhoods. The parish currently engages a group of 75 young adults. They will become youth leaders to spread the gospel message in their neighborhoods and break the cycle of violence. In Ecuador, the Diocese of Loja organized a three-day formation program for their catechists, many of whom work in isolated areas. More than 2,500 catechists gathered from around the diocese to participate in training sessions on rural ministry, bible instruction, and other areas of catechesis. One of the participants, Andrea, said that the experience was informative and enriching and that the catechists were able to meet each other and share their diverse experiences. She said that the sessions fortified her spirit so that she can go back to her ministry in the parish and better serve the people in the diocese. The Collection for the Church in Latin America, through projects like these youth and young adult ministry programs, as well as catechesis programs, empowers the people of Latin America to deepen their faith and share it with each other and the world. Oddany na wychowanie benedyktynom na Monte Cassino pobierał nauki w szkole klasztornej, a następnie studiował w Neapolu. Wstąpił do zakonu dominikanów i dalsze studia odbył w Paryżu i w Kolonii pod kierunkiem św. Alberta Wielkiego. Wykładał filozofię i teologię. Napisał znakomite dzieła z tego zakresu. Zmarł w opactwie cystersów Fossanova pod Terraciną dnia 7 marca 1274 roku. Dnia 28 stycznia 1369 roku przeniesiono jego ciało do Tuluzy. Święty Tomasz z Akwinu, swoje wielkie możliwości intelektualne i niespotykaną pracowitość oddał do dyspozycji Boga. Przekonywał, że rozum nie kłóci się z wiarą, lecz do niej prowadzi i ją wyjaśnia. Zbudował system teologii, od jego imienia nazywany tomizmem, na którym oparła się nauka Kościoła. Był przy tym bardzo pokorny. Swe przemyślenia przedstawiał nieustannie Bogu na modlitwie. Podobno gdy pisał o tajemnicy Trójcy Świętej, modlił się nieomal z głową w tabernakulum.
