July 31, 2016 18th Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen ON CUTTINGS, CLUTTER, AND SONG Copyright 2016 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) We had a cu ng at work recently. That s the term we use when comparing one item against another--usually a private label product against the na onal brand--to see how well or poorly the former does against the la er. In this case, we were doing jams and jellies against Smucker s. Like most of our cu ngs, this one was conducted blind (as in, the panelists don t know which item is which). And this par cular cu ng was couched as a Team Evalua on, essen ally a vote to see if the proposed product is approved or not. Each TE begins with two ques ons: Are you a user of the item? (here, blackberry jam, as I recall) and Are you a user of the category? (here, Jams/Jellies/ Preserves). One of the panelists--patrick--said No to both ques- ons, and I found his second No to be par cularly interes ng. I mean, I could totally understand Patrick not using a given flavor of jam, jelly, or preserve. But not using Jams/Jellies/Preserves period? Others may have been thinking the same thing, and one panelist spoke up to this effect. You don t use the category? she asked. These cu ngs are meant to be done in silence, so I chided her with my usual reprimand ( Don t badger the panelists! ), but Patrick entertained the ques on, and his response was simple and profound at the same me: What would I need it for? I remember reading somewhere once that we all have five basic needs: air, water, food (Jams/Jellies/Preserves qualify, but not really), clothing, and shelter. Everything else is gravy. Or marmalade Anyway, I kept thinking about what Patrick said--and all the stuff in my garage and basement--and a few nights later, I even wrote a song about such ponderings. Here are a few lines of the lyrics: Something that somebody said/ It s been playing music in my head/ Something bout want and greed/ And about the things that a man might really need/ The clu er s ge ng way out of hand/ That yoke you spoke of is making demands/ So Jesus help me posit a plan/ to get free The cu ng, the clu er, the song. They all come back to me now as I consider today s readings. First (from Ecclesiastes, with Qoheleth speaking to humankind s bent for riches, even with all of wealth s emo onal trappings): Vanity of vani es All things are vanity! Next (from the Apostle Paul): Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality and the greed that is idolatry. And finally (from Jesus himself, when someone in the crowd pleads with Christ to help the person gain some share of inheritance from his brother): Take care to guard against all greed, for though one s life may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. I suspect we all carry baggage we don t need. It may be stuff. It may be anxiety. It may be a hurt that we can t let go of. Or won t. Today s readings--and Patrick-- remind us to lighten up. Literally and metaphorically. And we can. S ll, like the song says: Nothing changes ll I change/ This one s on me to rearrange/ Things are only things and things do not define the game/ But if I let them who s to blame?
