What does it mean to have a Mass offered" for someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the inten ons of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one s soul. We find not only the origins of this prac ce da ng to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance. October 11, 2015 28th Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen As I begin this column, I am si ng on the couch in the living room of my brother-in-law s house in Des Plaines, IL. Tim s wife Cathy is in the kitchen speaking with Tim s daughter Jessica, my wife Gail, and Gail s sister Sunny. I hear voices--happy voices--saying things like Look at this one, and My God, we were so young They are sor ng through family photographs. Of Tim. To take to the funeral home in a few minutes. Because late this past Friday night, a er a beau ful evening with Cathy in their backyard talking, sharing a glass of wine, and listening to music by the warmth of their fire pit, Tim fell down the basement stairs as he walked back into the house. He did not survive. Did he simply stumble and fall? Did he have a heart a ack or stroke which caused him to fall? Details are s ll forming, and the family is at this moment wai ng on the medical examiner s report. When received, it will answer some ques ons, but it won t bring Tim back. He was 53. A young 53. Thoughts swirl through one s head at mes like this. At least they swirl through my head, now. Thoughts of incredulity, of what-ifs, of life and death. And by coincidence--or divine planning--i take comfort in today s first reading from the Book of Wisdom. I prayed, and prudence was given to me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a li le sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Perhaps the wisest among us just u lize me well. You know. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish while ye may Tim and Cathy did. Truly, even their last night together was spent enjoying each other s company. And Cathy told me that they d been discussing re rement lately, which tells me they were already looking forward to spending s ll more me together. Sigh Per tradi on, the Scriptures are God-inspired. I believe this. But inspired wri ng comes in many forms, and I found my share over several days in another piece of great literature: Sherman s Lagoon, a Chicago Tribune comic strip by Jim Toomey. The star of the strip is a shark named Sherman and it deals with his daily adventures. Recently Sherman met a ny sea creature called a midge, and midges, we come to know, have only a three-hour life span. Sherman is fascinated by this, and for about a week or so, he learns from the midge about me management. In the final midge strip, Sherman tells his wife of his learnings, saying, Get this. In three hours, they manage to raise their children and find success and happiness. Then he asks her, What s taking us so long? to which she replies, The curse of longevity. But tomorrow is never guaranteed. Or only, as a friend tells me, Si Dios le permite. If God allows. Jesus speaks to us of wisdom in today s Gospel and it comes down to this: follow him. Ul mately, then, we are all on the same path. Tim s journey is now completed. I don t understand it, but he s gone home. Wisdom s ll calls for the rest of us, though.
