January 5, 2003 Epiphany of the Lord Page Three Baptism Preparation Classes If you are anticipating the baptism of your child, and this is your first child to be baptized at St. Ferdinand Church, please accept our heartiest congratulations! Parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation class prior to the Baptism of your first child at St. Ferdinand Church. Classes are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory. The dates of the next classes are: January 8, 2002 February 5, 2002 Since we do not celebrate the sacrament of Baptism during the penitential season of Lent, if you wish to have your child baptized during the Easter Season, then you will need to participate in one of these classes. Please call the rectory at 622-5900 to make your reservation at the class of your choice. As Catholics we take seriously the responsibility to practice the faith we profess and to instill our Catholic- Christian values in our children. Bulletin reminder: All notices for the January 12th bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, January 6th. You may drop your bulletin notices off at the rectory in an envelope labeled bulletin or you may fax them to 622-5903. The e-mail address for bulletin notices is bulletin@saintferdinand.org. The wise still seek Him. As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so... please remember in your prayers: Joseph Balicki Timothy Benson Albin Bilinski Frank Bisceglie Stephanie Bosco Gabriella Bragagnolo Alba Jennie Burroughs Benito Cabanin Claudio Clemente Maureen Conroy Bishop Edwin Conway Anna Diks Lillian Dziedzic Joseph Gagliano Fatima Gomez Rocco Greco Mary Hain Judith Hodolitz Mary Ann Johansen Catherine Keeler Stanley Kochniarczyk Helen Kosirog Tad Koziol James Lamberti Michael Lans Netta Lohrmann Eleanor Loscuito Elizabeth Ann Maher Susan Maher Francesco Mangialardo Mary Martin Estelle Toots McGuigan Emilia Moreno John Morris Steven Mosinski Dan Oliver, Jr. Timothy Rajski Sophie Regner Alicia Schippits Lenore Simzyk Estelle Stybur Minerva Watson Anne Wickman Bruno Wojcik CHAINS OF GRACE The chains of grace are so powerful, and yet so sweet, that though they attract our heart, they do not shackle our freedoms. St. Francis de Sales Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish This is a combined report for Sunday, December 22nd and the Feast of Christmas. Due to the holidays requiring earlier bulletin deadlines, there will also be a combined report next week for the end of December and beginning of January. We are grateful for your weekly stewardship and your gifts to the Church on Christmas. Your support of St. Ferdinand s throughout the year makes it possible for us to serve so many of God s people in our neighborhood. As an estimate, we probably welcomed 10,000 parishioners and guests at our fourteen Christmas Masses on December 24 and 25. Many people commented on how beautiful the Church or a particular Mass was; which is always nice to hear. Our major feasts require the efforts of many volunteer parishioners and parish staff members working for our collective benefit up to, on and after the holidays. We are grateful to everyone for their service to the Church who helped to prepare for, as well as assisted with, the various liturgies of the Christmas season. May God bless you abundantly in this new year. Daniel P. Your gifts of love in the form of a present has made them happy. Most parents said thank you with tears in their eyes. Times have been hard for many in our area. Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth Attention: Ushers / Men of St. Ferdinand Our next Ushers / Men s Club meeting will be held on Friday, January 10th, 2003 at 8:00 p.m. in Heeney Hall. Your host for this meeting will be Frank DeMarco and the rest of the 12:15 p.m. Chapel crew. Please come and join us. All the men of the parish are invited. Contribution Statements In the past, many parishes (including ourselves) mailed out contribution statements at the end of every year. We have found, however, that due to certain changes in IRS tax laws and other circumstances, most people no longer need the information found on these statements. Because of this, and also the high cost of postage, we will NOT be sending them out once again this year. If you still need a contribution statement, please call the rectory after January 15, 2003, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to request one and to arrange a time and date that you will pick it up. Statements will be printed on request only. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Before long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads in the streets of New Orleans purple, gold, and green. A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are derived from the gifts of the magi. Gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king, the myrrh; fragrant burial ointment for one who comes to die. Centuries ago, today s feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christ s identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunately the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent, and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord and to Christ s coming again in glory. Tonight, be sure to light the Christmas lights, and gather at the creche for a favorite carol and a prayer. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

January 5, 2003 Epiphany of the Lord Page Nine Some Christians bless their homes on Epiphany each year. With chalk, they write an inscription on the inside lintel above the front door. The series of numbers, letters and crosses changes only slightly from year to year. For example, at the start of the year 2003, the line will read as follows: 20+C+M+B+03. The four digits designating the new year appear at the beginning and end of the line. In 2004, for example, the last number changes to a 4. Because Epiphany comes so near the beginning of the new year, the numbers represent an annual renewal of God s blessing. The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat. May Christ bless the house. The letters recall the day on which the inscription is made, as well as the purpose of blessing. Support Staff Mrs. Aneta Koæma, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L. Rev. David J. Cortesi and Daniel P. Costigan, ex officio. Epiphany Chalk by Paul Turner St. Ferdinand Parish The crosses represent Christ, whom we invoke, and the saintliness of the magi. The inscription is made above the front door, so that all who enter and depart this year may enjoy God s blessing. The month of January still bears the name of the Roman god Janus, the doorkeeper of heaven and patron of the beginning and end of things. This blessing adds a Christian dimension to the traditional observance of the first month. The inscription is made of chalk, a product of clay, which recalls the human nature taken by God s eternal word in this holy season. If you want to bless your home this Epiphany, read the opening verses of John s Gospel, pray the Lord s prayer, then write the inscription for this year above your front door with chalk.
