Nauczanie Jezusa, Jego cuda rodziły i nadal rodzą pytanie: Kim On jest?. Lista odpowiedzi jest długa. Apostoł Piotr, pytany przez Jezusa, odpowiada: Ty jesteś Mesjasz, Syn Boga żywego (Mt 16,16). To wyznanie stanie się wyznaniem wiary Kościoła. Jak rozumieć słowa Syn Boży? W Starym Testamencie ten tytuł odnosił się do aniołów, do ludu wybranego, do króla Izraela. Oznaczał on więc przybrane synostwo, szczególną bliskość między Bogiem a stworzeniem. W odniesieniu do Jezusa ten tytuł nabiera innego sensu.
