Last Sunday at the 12:30 pm Liturgy we gathered together as the community of St. Ferdinand Parish to bid farewell to our 5th Pastor, Fr. David J. Cortesi, as he prepared to end his 18 years of service to us and officially commence his six-month sabbatical leave on September 1st. It was a wonderful liturgy with the full of parishioners, staff and friends; and the reception that followed was exactly what Father wanted a simple but very nice gathering of the people that Father has known and worked with for many years. I know that Father Cortesi will write soon to personally thank the hundreds of people that came to our Activity Center Cafeteria to speak with him and say goodbye, but as the coordinator of the event, I would like to express my gratitude as well to all who joined in the celebration. About four months ago representatives from each of our parish organizations and many staff members came together to plan the day according to Father s wishes and to work on several sub-committees. The teams included planners for the liturgy, the reception, invitations/publicity, the memory book, the gift committee and the set-up and clean-up crews. Thank you, one and all, for working together so well and for all of your efforts. Thanks also to all who attended for expressing your fondness and appreciation to Fr. Cortesi for his leadership and priestly ministry here among us for three terms as our pastor. May God bless you! Daniel P. What: Talk: Eucharist, Celebration of Life: the Dynamics of God's Love in the Celebration Where: St. Ferdinand Parish Chapel When: Sunday, September 11, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. Purpose: To bring God's people closer to Jesus in the Eucharist. The talk will be given by Rev. Joel Lasutaz, SSS, a member of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament and Director of the Eucharistic Communications. Eucharistic Adoration for Priests. A Special Mass for priests and vocations will be held at St. Cyprian, 2601 Clinton Street, River Grove, on Monday, September 12th at 7:00 PM. This will be followed by an hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and will conclude with Benediction. The Monstrance that will be used for the Holy Hour and Benediction has been specially blessed by Pope John Paul II on March 2, 2005 before he passed away on April 2nd. John and I often run together after work, but he told me a few weeks back that he couldn t make it Wednesday because he and the rest of his class from the Old Town School of Folk Music were playing that night at a local tavern. John said that the current session had just ended and that this was a graduation gig of sorts. I wanted to go both for the music and as a demonstration of support for my friend but my wife and I had commitments for the evening. Everything clicked that night, however, and quickly, so about three minutes before John and his fellow musicians took the stage at the Hungry Brain, Gail and I settled in for the show. It was the first time we had been out to see a live music performance in several months. We both had a great time. The musicians did, too, it seemed, and Gail and I headed home about two hours later smiling and agreeing that we should do this sort of thing more often. Three days later, I got my chance. While out for a long Saturday morning training run with a bunch of marathoner friends, one marathoner friend in particular told me that he had an extra ticket to that evening s Coldplay concert at Alpine Valley and asked me if I wanted to join him. Is the Pope Catholic? I checked the calendar. I also checked with my wife. No glitches at either location, so come starlight, I was stretched out on the Alpine Valley lawn, digging the music, and thanking God for rock and roll. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) John the banjo player included were surprised to learn that I had gone to see Coldplay. And that I had gotten in with a free pass, no less. That s when I had to tell them that my wife and I were going to Ravinia on the upcoming Friday evening this time with a pair of free tickets given to us by friends who couldn t make the gig to see Tony Bennett. It s funny how things go. Anyway, perhaps because of all the music in my life over the preceding days, I stretched out on the lawn at Ravinia a few nights later, closed my eyes, and this is the thought that came to me: other than sports, music is one of the few things that performers are said to play. I wondered if, to musicians, music ever feels like work. On Labor Day, we celebrate and honor America s working people. With this in mind, and recalling my Ravinia contemplation, I asked a friend the other day a professional musician if music is work or play. As I suspected, he said it depends. Doesn t it for all of us, whether we re musicians or not? Some days are 10s, after all, while some days are 1s, and most days are somewhere in-between. But if we can use our gifts each day for the good, and in true thanksgiving for all that we ve been given, I think we have a better chance of making our music or our work play. John and his banjo buddies, Coldplay, and Tony Bennett all seemed to be having a good time up there. With or without music in the work that we do, may we each one play along.
