May 1, 2005 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Three May 2005 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Each year, on Mother s Day, we celebrate and thank our mothers for all that they have done for us. Whether they are with us on this day, or have gone before us to eternity, we take time to gratefully acknowledge their unfailing love and generosity; their faith and strength that encircled and protected us when we were helpless or afraid. But many mothers are themselves in great need of support. They may need emergency food, clothing, or temporary housing for their children and themselves until they can sustain a permanent home. They may need job skills to support their families. Parents know that it is hard enough to raise children in an atmosphere of love and stability when one parent is employed and all family members are healthy. But when families are touched by poverty, crisis, job loss, addiction, or the serious illness of a parent oar child, life may become very difficult indeed. For families at the lowest end of the economic ladder, these problems are often catastrophic. It is these families who are sustained by the comprehensive services of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. In a myriad of programs that are both demanding and supportive, mothers are challenged, supported and lifted up so that they may regain their ability to care for themselves and their beloved children in stability, heath and dignity. Last year, with your help, Catholic Charities assisted 870,000 children, families, seniors and individuals in 170 programs at 160 locations throughout Cook and Lake Counties. And mothers in need found the means and strength to care for and encircle their cherished children with love. I ask you to generously support Catholic Charities efforts for families, knowing that whatever you do to help your poor and forsaken brothers and sisters, you do for Christ. May Mary, the Mother of God, bless all mothers and children, and all those in need. Sincerely yours, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish From time to time, we need to take stock of our list of those who are sick. Please, just as you call the rectory to ask that your loved ones names be placed on the sick list for our prayers, let us know when they have recovered sufficiently to be taken off. We may then say a prayer of thanksgiving for their speedy recovery. For anyone suffering a chronic illness, there is no limit to the length of time you may be on this list. We will continue to pray for you as long as you wish. Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so... please remember in your prayers: Thomas D. Usually Catholic Charities is the largest second collection of the year because of your willingness to support the many good works that they do throughout Cook and Lake counties. Catholic Charities is our social service agency to help the poor and needy. Please be as generous as possible. On behalf of all those who you will provide aid to this year in Christ s name, thank you. Daniel P. Costigan, Parish Business Manager

You ll provide this information: name, date of birth, social security number. You ll have a mini-physical examination that includes checking your temperature, your blood pressure and pulse. A drop of blood will be taken to be sure you have enough red blood cells to donate safely. You ll be asked about your past and present health and lifestyle. This interview will be private and confidential. You ll be given a form so you can let us know, privately, whether your blood is safe to give to another person. An area of your arm will be cleansed. All of the supplies, including the needle, are sterile and are used only once for you. We are having two Spring Open Houses on Tuesday, May 10th from 8:00 AM until 11:30 AM, and then again on Wednesday, May 11th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM for all those who are new to the area, missed our January open house, are considering a change from their current school, and/or looking to enroll their children into school for the first time. The donation usually takes about 10 minutes. You ll have given about a pint of blood when finished. Your body will replace plasma (liquid part) in hours and the cells in a few weeks. After donating blood: When you are finished, you will be given a form with post-donation and call-back instructions, a number to call if you decide after you leave that your blood may not be safe to give to another person. You will then be directed to the refreshment area where you will be served juice, cookies/cake and coffee. Assuming you re feeling okay, you ll be able to leave the donor location. Although most people feel fine before and after donating blood, a small number of people may have an upset stomach, faintness or dizziness, black and blue mark, redness or pain where the needle was very rarely, a person may faint, have muscle spasms, and/or suffer nerve damage. Rev. David J. Cortesi and Daniel P. Costigan, ex officio. ON EASTER SEASONS AND BIRCH WOOD CROSSES I don t mean to get ahead of myself here, but we should enjoy the Easter Season while it lasts. This is already the 6th Sunday of the Big Event. Pentecost is right around the corner, and before you know it, we ll be back into Ordinary Time on the Church calendar (which, as we ve always been told, is anything but ordinary). Still, the liturgical seasons are nice, especially when the altar area is dressed up for the occasion. Here at my parish, Lent makes a quiet statement, but the place is awash with lights and poinsettias for Christmas, and come Easter, spring is sprung. Flowers. A tiny pool of water near the ambo. And something new two weeks back: a birch wood cross attached to the lectern. I sat on that side for Sunday Mass recently. Two pews from the front, in fact. This isn t my usual spot, but I was there with our Holy Name Society, and we always sit front/right. Anyway, I could almost reach out and touch that cross, it was so close. It stood maybe five feet tall and was maybe four feet wide. Frankly, it annoyed me at first because when Alan, a parish cantor and HNS member, led us in singing the Psalms that day, he was partially hidden by the birch wood. I got used to the timber soon enough, though, and by the time Alan led us in the Gospel Acclamation, it was as if the cross wasn t even there anymore. Which, I m sure, is precisely what Deacon Jim was thinking. Here s how it works at our place. The deacon normally St. Ferdinand Parish Copyright 2005 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) processes in with the book of the Gospels and places it on the altar. Come Gospel time, the deacon gets his blessing from the priest, takes the book from the altar, and holds it high above his head in reverence to the Word. Then, following the acolytes lead, he processes from the altar, around the lectern, in front of the altar, and on to the ambo to read the sacred text. Like I said, I was sitting front/right, so I saw the whole thing unfold. I saw Deacon Jim cut the corner too close around the lectern. I saw the cross catch his right arm as he made his way to the ambo. And I definitely saw the surprised look on his face Grabbed by the cross! If only it could happen to all of us. If only we could get close enough to the cross to let it grab us, surprising us by its tangible presence in our lives. But wait a minute. Maybe it s already happening, and maybe it s happening more than we know. For aren t we grabbed by the cross whenever we show forgiveness. Whenever we give of our gifts? Whenever we embrace the marginalized? In today s first reading, Philip proclaims Christ to those who do not know Him. From liturgical season to Ordinary Time and back again, let s do exactly the same thing by following Jim s lead. May we first pay reverence to the Word by holding it high in our lives. Then may we, too, get grabbed by the cross. Even or perhaps especially when we least expect it.
