How can such an innocent, cuddly baby have the power to change our lives and provoke such emotional extremes? Because you love. You love your children and want the best for them. Their accomplishments bring you pride. Their hurts make your heart ache. Their mistakes bring you frustration and the temptation to rescue them. Once you ve met the basic family needs, often your child will benefit from your presence at home even if it means cutting back on work hours or taking a less stressful job. So what prompts a couple to be willing to undertake the daunting and risky job of becoming a parent? For some it is just what they always expected to do. Isn t that what life is about? You grow up, get married, and have children. For others, they just love babies (and hopefully young people in general). For many, it s a gradual awareness that pulls you to expand this wonderful love you have for each other to create new human beings. You are mystified by the miracle of a new human sharing your DNA, your home, and your future. What will this new creation look like? What traits of each of you will he or she possess? Following are some rules of thumb for the most common issues that parents face in raising children: Balancing children s needs vs spouse s needs It s normal and necessary for parents to respond to their children s urgent physical, emotional, and educational needs. This usually takes more hours of the day than time devoted to relating to your spouse. To keep your spouse a priority, however, family life educators recommend: daily affirmations (words, hugs, kisses) a weekly date an annual get away (without the children) Some of these require getting a baby sitter (or having family or generous friends) but think of the cost as marriage insurance. Dealing with worries about children Worrying and fretting about your children come with the job and can prompt needed action. Some parents, however, over worry and become helicopter parents, hovering over their children. Remember, you are responsible for the process you use in raising your children not the outcome. When all else fails (and hopefully before) turn it over to God.

Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to members of Polish Highlanders Club with its president, Mr. Tadeusz Kulasik and the Board of Advisors for their generous donation of $2,500 to support our Building and Maintenance Fund. February 16, 2014 6th Ordinary Sunday Page YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! What can you do now that won t cost you anything but still help the parish? One way is through your estate planning. Most people have families they need to provide for and that is extremely important. Perhaps some portion of your estate could be given to Saint Ferdinand. Here s how you can do it: Name Saint Ferdinand to receive part of your IRA. Just ask the custodian or trustee for a new beneficiary form. Make a life insurance gift. Your insurance agent can supply a beneficiary form that names Saint Ferdinand as a beneficiary for all or part of the policy. Investigate P.O.D. accounts. In most areas, you can name Saint Ferdinand to receive CD s or savings accounts at death, often called P.O.D. (pay on death) accounts. Leave part of your stock portfolio. Brokerage accounts generally will permit investors to name beneficiaries for securities held at the firm. Add Saint Ferdinand when you make or amend your will. It s another wonderful way you can leave a legacy for Saint Ferdinand! If you have a revocable living trust, include Saint Ferdinand as a beneficiary. Any immediate gifts made through your living trust are tax deductible. Finally, when naming Saint Ferdinand as your beneficiary, the correct language is: I give (a percentage or dollar amount) to the Catholic Bishop of Chicago A Corporation Sole, for the sole benefit of Saint Ferdinand Parish, Chicago. Ojciec Ignacy Posadzy, Założyciel Zgromadzenia Sióstr Misjonarek Chrystusa Króla dla Polonii Zagranicznej urodził się 17 lutego 1898 roku w Szadłowicach koło Inowrocławia. Po ukończeniu szkoły podstawowej rozpoczął naukę w Gimnazjum im. Jana Kasprowicza w Inowrocławiu. W 1917 roku młody Ignacy zgłosił się do Arcybiskupiego Seminarium Duchownego w Poznaniu. Studia filozoficzne i teologiczne odbywał w Münster i Fuldzie. Jako student zetknął się z polskimi robotnikami sezonowymi w Niemczech, z ich problemami i opuszczeniem duchowym. Gromadził tych ludzi, pouczał, odprawiał dla nich nabożeństwa Słowa Bożego. Wtedy postanowił, że kiedy zostanie kapłanem, poświęci tym ludziom czas wakacyjny.po wojnie wrócił do wolnej Polski. 19 lutego 1921 roku otrzymał święcenia kapłańskie z rąk biskupa Kloske w Gnieźnie. W kolegiacie farnej w Poznaniu rozpoczął pracę duszpasterską. Zasłynął jako dobry kaznodzieja i gorliwy spowiednik. Po 3 latach został prefektem seminarium męskiego, potem żeńskiego. Od 1922 roku ksiądz Ignacy poświęcał czas wakacji Polakom emigrantom, odwiedzając ośrodki polonijne w Europie i Azji Mniejszej, a 1929 roku w Brazylii, Argentynie i Urugwaju. O problemach emigracji polskiej pisał reportaże do gazet, zapoznając z problemem polskich emigrantów nasze społeczeństwo. W rok później został zaproszony przez księdza Prymasa do tworzenia zgromadzenia męskiego Towarzystwa Chrystusowego dla Polonii Zagranicznej w Potulicach. Był jego długoletnim przełożonym. Ojciec Ignacy, wierny inspiracjom kardynała Hlonda, przystąpił w 1958 roku do tworzenia żeńskiego zgromadzenia do pomocy duszpasterskiej księżom Towarzystwa Chrystusowego pracującym wśród Polonii. Nową wspólnotę zakonną erygował ksiądz arcybiskup Antoni Baraniak. Dnia 17 stycznia 1984 roku w Puszczykowie ojciec Ignacy Posadzy zakończył swoją ziemską wędrówkę. Jego ciało spoczęło na miłostowskim cmentarzu w Poznaniu. W telegramie kondolencyjnym Ojciec Święty Jan Paweł II napisał: Dziękuję Wszechmocnemu Bogu za długie życie i dzieło Człowieka ukształtowanego przez łaskę i Szafarza łaski, (...) Człowieka wiary, kontemplacji i apostolstwa." Na zakończenie diecezjalnego etapu procesu beatyfikacyjnego 20 stycznia 2007 roku, szczątki doczesne Sługi Bożego przeniesione zostały do kaplicy Domu Głównego Towarzystwa Chrystusowego w Poznaniu. Modlitwa o beatyfikację Sługi Bożego O. Ignacego Posadzego Wszechmogący wieczny Boże, który przez krew Twojego Syna odkupiłeś każdego człowieka, prosimy, pozwól nam wielbić Ciebie w Słudze Twoim Ojcu Ignacym, który pełen wiary, nadziei, miłości i troski wobec emigrantów, uczy nas modlitwy i ducha ofiary jako najskuteczniejszego sposobu apostołowania, a dla zwiększenia Twojej chwały udziel mi łaski, którą Cię pokornie proszę. Przez Chrystusa, Pana naszego. Amen. February 16, 2014 6th Ordinary Sunday Page ON MISSED READINGS, AND FULFILLED LAWS Copyright 2014 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) Today on the Church calendar we celebrate the 6th Sunday in Ordinary time, which means that two weeks ago, we should have celebrated the 4th Sunday. But we didn t. Because two weeks ago, we celebrated the Presentation of our Lord instead. My wife and I were lectors that weekend, and I soon saw that the readings I thought we would do weren t the readings we d be doing at all, so I asked our deacon about this before Mass. He explained that since the Presentation fell on Sunday this year and since it s such an important event those readings trumped the scheduled readings. Fine. But what did we miss? Well, let me tell you. First we missed hearing from the Prophet Zephaniah ( Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth who have observed his law; seek justice, seek humility ). Then we missed Paul s letter to the Corinthians ( God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong ). And finally we missed Jesus himself in his Sermon on the Mount ( Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land ). The Beatitudes. Man, I love this reading. And accordingly, it was the reading Gail and I chose for her mother s funeral service just over three years ago now. Where does the time go, Shirley Mom? Anyway, the Beatitudes for me have always been peace filled, and just as they warmed me then, they warm me today, for look what we re promised if we live the life of discipleship which the Beatitudes call us to live by the personal qualities we profess Comfort. Inheritance. Satisfaction. Mercy. The vision of God. Acknowledgement that we are the children of God. Indeed, the kingdom of heaven itself! But here s the thing. Today s Gospel gives us the mechanics of what it means to live a blessed are they life. And it s hard. Heck. I don t know if it s even possible. You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill, and whoever kills will be liable to judgment, Christ begins, But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment. OK. I m in trouble here. And You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart More trouble. And then Jesus offers us more of the same concerning divorce and swearing. Yikes. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets, he begins today s passage. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill Makes me kind of wish he d come to abolish the old law, you know? Because truly, this new law of love which is really the old law of love, fulfilled seems impossible at times. But Zephaniah brought it within grasp for all of us two weeks ago in the missed reading: Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth. Seek the Lord. Seek the Lord. Seek the Lord Ah, discipleship. It s hard, impossible, and simple, all at the same time.
