March 15, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Lent Page Four THE MASTERPIECE OF CREATION Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel reading of Mark in which the Pharisees, wishing to put Jesus to the test, asked him whether it is lawful to divorce. The Pope reminded his listeners that Jesus goes right back to the days of crea on. Jesus explains, But from the beginning of crea on, God made them male and female; For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Pope Francis had much to say about this event and explained quite beau fully that the Lord is here referring to the masterpiece of crea on. For God created the light and saw that it was good. Then he created the animals, the trees, and the stars: all good. But when he created man he said that he was very good. Pope Francis con nued, the crea- on of man and woman is the masterpiece of crea- on. Also because God did not want for man to be alone: he wanted him to be with his companion, his companion on the journey. Pope Francis then explained that this moment was also the beginning of love. However, he added that the Lord s masterpiece was not finished there the Lord holds up this love contained in the masterpiece of crea on in order to explain the love he has for his people. Yet there is another step: when Paul needs to explain the mystery of Christ, he also does so in rela on and in reference to the bride. For Christ is wedded: he wedded the Church, his people; as the Father had wedded his people Israel, so Christ espoused his people to himself. All of this, the Pope concluded, brings to mind the plan of love, the journey of love of Chris an marriage, which God blessed in the masterpiece of his crea on with a blessing that can never be taken away. Not even original sin destroyed it. And when one considers this, he quite naturally sees how beau ful love is, how beau ful marriage is, how beau ful the family is, how beau ful this journey is. Did You Know? In his Theology of the Body, St. John Paul II explained that man became an image of God not only through his own humanity, but also through the communion of persons, which man and woman form from the very beginning. Through marriage, a husband and wife are able to be a true communion of persons by giving themselves and receiving the other in unselfish love. In this way, a husband and wife have the unique ability to reflect Trinitarian Love. www.marriageuniqueforreason.org

It is a way of thanking God for all the blessing God has given us by returning to God a por on of our me, talent, and treasure. Stewardship is based on our need to give back to God our of gra tude, not on the Church s need to receive. It is based on the premise that all that we have and all that we are comes from God and, as a way of thanking God for all our blessings, we return a por on of the me, talent, and treasure that has been allo ed to us Please con nue to give prayerful thought to your commitment of me talent and treasure to the Church and community. March 15, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Lent Page Thirteen I recently Googled, What is the most Googled bible verse? The first entry (on chris anity.com) showed a list of the top ten searched verses, but just a few sentences in, the author gave me my answer: You probably won t be surprised to learn that John 3:16 is the most-searched Bible verse, according to sta s cal analysis provided by the folks at Bible Gateway. They reviewed the behavior of some of the eight million visitors who stop by their site each month, many of them chasing results provided by Google So there you have it. John 3:16--the second sentence in today s Gospel--is the most-searched verse in Scripture, because if it says so on the Internet, it must be true, right? Actually, it could be. I Googled it, in fact, several years ago. And I did it for the same reason probably many of those eight million referenced above Googled it. I m guessing they saw a John 3:16 sign at an NFL game either in person or on television. Typically the signholder posi ons himself or herself behind the goalposts so that with every extra point or field goal a empt, the message calls out to us, promp ng some of us to go to the web or to the Bible itself to see what all the excitement s about. And the excitement, of course, is this: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. A deacon told me once that to really get the readings--and individual verses, I suppose--we must look at what comes before and what comes a er. OK. What comes before is Jesus speaking with Support Staff Mrs. Zofia Mazurek, Parish Secretary Sr. Kamila Wojdyla, Administrative Assistant Ms. Elizabeth Ceisel-Mikowska, Bulletin Editor Mr. Kamil Duda, Website Designer/Editor Liturgical Bro. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews. Nicodemus credits Jesus as a teacher sent from God, but he does not grasp what Jesus is telling him about the need to be born again of water and Spirit. And today s reading actually begins with Jesus telling Nicodemus, Just as Moses li ed up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be li ed up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life, which references the Old Testament account of Moses li ing up a bronze serpent so that the rebellious Israelites who looked upon it might be saved. What comes a er in Scripture is the Bap st s final witness to Jesus as the Messiah. John 3:16 then--with the before and a er-- encapsulates our faith. No wonder it s so popular. But these aren t just words upon a page (or a computer screen, or a hand-held sign at a football game). If we profess the Christ, we must walk with him. And if we walk with him, we must emulate him. And if we emulate him, we must live the lives of discipleship he calls us to. Feed the hungry. Give drink to the thirsty. Welcome the stranger. But it s so hard. All of it. Because these things typically ask us to step out of our rou nes and to actually engage with the marginalized and the oppressed of the world, the very people who Jesus himself embraced and embraces to this day. It s one thing to look upon the cross and say, Lord, Lord. It s something else to say Lord, Lord and roll up our sleeves. Lent asks us to change. Lent asks us to really walk with Christ. Lent asks us to live 3:16.
