4 Dear Parishioners and Friends, The atmosphere of the Last Supper was very drama c: prayer, Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles, the announcement of the betrayal, and farewell speech. It all went beyond the categories of human understanding and ac on. The Apostles - by the grace of God - seemed to understand that they are ea ng the bread and wine that became the body and blood of Christ, they understood they are par cipa ng in an extraordinary way in the life and death of Jesus, and at the same me they agreed to lead such a way of life following in the footsteps of Jesus The mystery of the rela onship of man with God focuses on the person of Jesus Christ. He who is the only Mediator of salva on, by his Spirit the Father talks to us and sacrifices Himself. Jesus through his life - the words and deeds - teaches us to implement a plan of our Father that "no one died but the son of perdi on." Another - third stage to discover again and again is that God is the First of those who loves us and his grace we live with throughout our life. Everything that makes up our lives is the work of God. As in the priestly prayer of Jesus - God works through the message of the Word, and preserves us from evil, and by sacrificed His only bego en Son, so that we may be consecrated in the truth. God works in us and through us. If you follow the will of God, you are a tool in his hands. I want to thank for Deacon Jim and his wife Connie Schiltz for their pastoral work at our parish for the last 25 years. Over the past few years, some mes several mes a week they drive over 90 miles a day to St. Constance. Their personality, joy from the ministry, faith in the Word of God provides others with power, and a true testament of God's beau ful ministry. Deacon Jim is involved in counseling to prepare young people for marriage, prepara on for bap sm, funeral ministries, works on the Finance Commi ee of the Parish Council. He is the chaplain of the Women's Club, Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus. We see him almost every Sunday and holiday at the altar and preaching from the pulpit. His wife Connie is an extremely religious and warm person. She is involved in preparing adults to accept the the Catholic faith, coordinates the work of the Anglo-speaking readers and ministers of the Eucharist, leads a prayer group, and is a member of the Parish Council. Along with her husband she prepares and directs future deacons and their wives. On Saturday, On May 30 they celebrate their 45th anniversary of marriage. 5 arish Transforma on con nues as we focus on our P various ini a ves under the major building blocks of Catechesis, Communio (a profound sense of community), and Missionary Spirit. Our major focus right now is on our new Hospitality Ministry, which fits under the Communio building block specifically. Here, the goal is to provide a more welcoming presence to old friends and new faces alike at our weekend liturgies as Ministers of Hospitality--at least one (but no more than two) at each of the five entrances into the church--greet and welcome people to Mass each Sunday. Ministers will be asked to arrive at church at least fi een minutes before the scheduled Mass. There will be Ministry of Hospitality badges in the ushers room. Volunteers would go to the ushers room, pick up a badge, put it on, and then go to one of the five main entrances. Besides arriving early, the only requirement for our Ministers of Hospitality is to smile/welcome people to church. When Mass begins, Hospitality Ministers sit wherever they d like, then they return their badges to the ushers room at the end of Mass. In an cipa on of the approaching 100-year anniversary of St. Constance Parish, you are invited to purchase from the "Tree of Life" a leaf on which you can place the names of your loved ones: parents, siblings, rela ves, friends, parishioners, priests, nuns, etc. Both the living and the dead can be named, so that their memory will last forever. You can have your own name on a leaf or choose to name your family. Proceeds from this project will be used for repairs of the church parking area and parish buildings. There are both large and small leaves on the "Tree of Life". For the engraving and moun ng of each small leaf, the dona on is $250.00, while for each large leaf it is $400.00. 9 YOUNG AT HEART MEMBERS Please remember our upcoming 45th Anniversary Celebra on Mee ng, Monday June 1, 2015 ($15.00). I must know by May 27, 2015 as the food must be pre-ordered. The May mee ng was simply Glorious. Our wonderful Chef Wally and his helper, Sharon Malen provided the most tasty luncheon. We got rave reviews. A er Luncheon we all went into church for the most beau ful Mass and May Crowning with St. Constance School Children including our precious Kindergarten class. We went back to the hall where we were serenaded by our precious kindergartners. What a beau- ful way to end our day. ON CONVERSING WITH THEOPHILUS, AND THE ASCENSION copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) My dearest Theophilus: So who are you, anyway? I do not ask this in an antagonis c way. On the contrary, I hold you as kindred spirit, for the Evangelist Luke addresses both his Gospel and his Acts of the Apostles to you, and any friend of Luke s is a friend of mine. I ve been reviewing the ancient texts, however, trying to understand you be er. I ve come to learn that Theophilus is a common Greek name meaning, God s friend. I like that. Some say that you are a local Jew-- Theophilus of Alexandria, perhaps--who Luke befriended along the way. Some say that you are a Roman official, and if this is true, you must be a rather high-ranking one at that, given that Luke refers to you as most excellent in certain transla ons. Some even say that you are legal counsel to the Apostle Paul. Well, I come to you now for counsel myself. I do not need legal advice, though. I need advice about this week s column. Typically I write each week in connec on with the readings of the day. I find wri ng for May 17 problema c, however, for while it s the 7 th Sunday of Easter, it s also the Sunday immediately following the May 14 Ascension celebra on, and most dioceses now celebrate Ascension on this Sunday as well. But my column has a wide readership, most excellent Theophilus, so where should its focus be. I lean toward focusing on the Ascension, and perhaps this suits you, too, since Luke addresses you in the first Ascension reading. But surely for you this vanity is dispelled by the content of the readings themselves, especially the Gospel text in which Jesus tells us, Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is bap zed will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. S ll, I can t neglect the readings for the 7 th Sunday of Easter because of something Jesus says. Twice Theophilus, a priest once told me that when Jesus says something more than once, we should really, really pay a en on to it. Look, then, at the Gospel for the 7 th Sunday of Easter. We return here to the Last Supper, and Jesus is praying to the Father for his friends (and by extension, for all of us). I gave them your word, Jesus says, and the world hated them because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Jesus goes on to ask the Father to protect his friends from the evil one, then he repeats himself word-for-word: They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world! Do you see my dilemma now? How can I ignore this most excellent concept, namely, that we are not ci zens of earth with a heavenly connec on, but that we are ci zens of heaven with an earthly connec on? Men of Galilee, those two guys dressed in white say as Jesus disappears into the clouds, why are you standing there looking at the sky? Indeed. Jesus is merely going home a er all, and ul mately, this is our home, too. You know, Theophilus, there s probably no right or wrong answer about which readings to address. But perhaps like Luke, I feel be er for having talked things through with you. Thanks for listening. Please tell the Evangelist I say hello.

Tom Mulcrone, Chaplain to Chicago Firefighters, will be the main celebrant at the annual Memorial Mass for the Chicago Fire Department at Holy Family Church, 1080 West Roosevelt Road in Chicago. The Mass begins at 10 a.m., and is preceded by a parade of uniformed members that begins at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Roosevelt and Blue Island Avenues. Following the Mass, a roll call of all the members who have died the previous year will be read. Rodzice są zobowiązani do wzięcia udziału w spotkaniu przygotowującym do tego sakramentu przed planowaną datą chrztu dziecka. Prosimy o skontaktowanie się z biurem parafialnym, aby zgłosić dziecko do chrztu. Sakrament Małżeństwa Archidiecezja Chicago zaleca, aby osoby, które planują zawarcie sakramentu małżeństwa zgłosiły się do biura parafialnego co najmniej cztery miesiące przed datą ślubu.
