July 24, 2016 17th Ordinary Sunday Page Four World Youth Day (WYD) - July 24-31 in Krakow, Poland is a worldwide encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. WYD is open to all young people who want to take part in a fes ve encounter with their contemporaries centered on Jesus Christ. This event is an opportunity to experience in first person the universality of the Church; to share with the whole world the hope of many young people who want to commit themselves to Christ and others. World Youth Day is a unique way to deepen your faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and the sacraments, together with thousands of other young people who share your interests and ambi ons. Perspec ve: An outside glance of an interna onal World Youth Day would spark a bystander s curiosity as massive crowds of young people flood the city streets. Some might cringe at the thought of those words, wondering what delinquency is in store, but to witness this gathering would end those fears. The happenstance observer would witness not angst and malice, but smiles and joy, singing and dancing young people, culture upon culture and na on upon na on, proudly holding their flags high (or wearing them), gree ng one another in peace, trading their tokens, humbly realizing how small they are in a world of people, and strengthened to witness so many who share their convic ons. How did it all begin? Beginnings: In 1984 at the close of the Holy Year of Redemp on, over 300,000 young people from around the world responded to the invita on of His Holiness John Paul II for an Interna onal Jubilee of youth on Palm Sunday in St. Peter s square. Looking out to the crowds who answered his invita on he said, What a fantas c spectacle is presented on this stage by your gathering here today! Who claimed that today s youth has lost their sense of values? Is it really true that they cannot be counted on? It was at this gathering that the Holy Father entrusted to the youth what is now known as the World Youth Day Cross, to be carried throughout the world as a symbol of the love of Christ for humanity. First WYD: The following Palm Sunday, coinciding with the United Na on s Interna onal Year of the Youth, Our Holy Father took the opportunity to welcome the youth of the world to Rome again. Later, announcing the ins tu on of World Youth Day on December 20, 1985, and the first official WYD was held in 1986. WYD Cross: The World Youth Day cross has many names: the Jubilee Cross, the Pilgrim Cross, the Youth Cross. It was entrusted to the youth as they were given the commission to carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ s love for humanity, and announce to everyone that only in the death and resurrec on of Christ can we find salva on and redemp on. The cross set out with the young people from St. Peter s in 1984 and has since been carried around the world, making a pilgrimage from parish to parish, diocese to diocese, and country to country On the same occasion, Pope John Paul II entrusted to the youth an icon of the Blessed Mother that would accompany the cross. It will be a sign of Mary s motherly presence close to young people who are called, like the Apostle John, to welcome her into their lives, said the pon ff.impact: So the cross and icon are carried together through the world touching hearts and inspiring holiness. Page Five 17th Ordinary Sunday July 24, 2016 Chicago, IL (July 15, 2016) The Young Adult Ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago (YAM) is hos ng a local overnight event for all young adults over the age of 18, in conjunc on with World Youth Day in Kraków, Poland. WYD Chicago 2016 will be held at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 1170 North River Road in Des Plaines, from Saturday, July 30, to Sunday, July 31. The keynote speaker at the event will be dr. mone davis, clinical assistant professor at the Ins tute of Pastoral Ministry at Loyola University Chicago, who also serves as the treasurer of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium. Other speakers include Rev. Kevin Scalf, Precious Blood priest and Chaplain at Bishop Noll Ins tute in Hammond, Indiana; Beth Knobbe, Rela onship Manager with Catholic Relief Services; Rachel Kohl, Loyola University Chicago Ins tute of Pastoral Studies student and on the Issues Staff at the 8th Day Center for Jus ce; and Kevin Foy, Director of Mission Educa on for the Maryknoll Missioners in the Midwest. The event will open on Saturday, July 30, with registra on at 5 p.m. During the event, par cipants can a end cateche cal sessions and workshops and take me for Eucharis c Adora on. In addi on, a Passion Play, Misterium Męki Pańskiej, will be performed in Polish by theatrical group, Wieczernik. The World Youth Day closing Mass from Kraków will be livestreamed for all par cipants at 3 a.m., on Sunday, July 31. Following the Mass, a endees will be able to take part in the Taize Prayer at 5 a.m., as well as an unveiling of a reproduc on of the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and a Procession to Mass, beginning at 9 a.m. The closing Mass, which is open to the public and will include the Shrine community, will be celebrated at the Shrine at 11 a.m., by Most Rev. Francis Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of the Chicago, with Rev. Stanisław Jankowski, CR, Pastor of St. Hyacinth Basilica, who will preach in both English and Polish. In addi on, YAM is leading an official pilgrimage of young adults to Kraków for WYD 2016. This is the largest gathering of young adult Catholics in the world and occurs every two or three years. The 2016 WYD will take place from July 25 un l July 31. Par cipants will spend me in prayer and reflec on, as well as visit historical landmarks in and around the city of Kraków. July 24, 2016 17th Ordinary Sunday Page Eight Ustanowienie Światowych Dni Młodzieży było kolejnym etapem troski Jana Pawła II o młodzież, którą wyrażał od pierwszych chwil swego pontyfikatu. Już podczas inauguracji swojego pontyfikatu, powiedział do młodych: Wy jesteście przyszłością świata, wy jesteście nadzieją Kościoła. Wy jesteście moją nadzieją. 13 marca 1983 r. otworzył młodzieżowe Centrum San Lorenzo w Watykanie, a gdy dwa tygodnie później inaugurował Rok Święty Nadzwyczajnego Jubileuszu Odkupienia, przyjął od młodych z tego centrum drewniany krzyż, który stał się symbolem Roku Świętego. Na zakończenie obchodów, w Niedzielę Palmową 22 kwietnia 1984 r., zwrócił ten krzyż młodzieży, by ta poniosła go na cały świat, jako znak Odkupienia i świadectwo swojej wiary. Młodzi przyjęli tę prośbę. Odpowiedzieli też na zaproszenie papieża, który zwołał ich do Rzymu w 1985 r. na spotkanie z okazji Międzynarodowego Roku Młodzieży ustanowionego przez ONZ. Między innymi te wydarzenia zainspirowały ojca świętego do cyklicznych spotkań z młodymi. Czym są ŚDM? Światowe Dni Młodzieży to międzynarodowe spotkania młodych całego świata, którzy razem ze swoimi katechetami, duszpasterzami, biskupami i Papieżem gromadzą się w jednym miejscu, by wyznać wiarę w Jezusa Chrystusa. Spotkania na próbę Dwa pierwsze spotkania (1984, 1985) zorganizowane z okazji Nadzwyczajnego Jubileuszu Odkupienia (1983-1984) i Międzynarodowego Roku Młodzieży (1985) nie były jeszcze Światowymi Dniami Młodzieży. To jednak one dały papieżowi impuls do podjęcia tej błogosławionej inicjatywy, która trwa do dnia dzisiejszego. Wspólnota, formacja i radość wiary Celem organizowanych Dni jest przeżycie wielkiej wspólnoty Kościoła Powszechnego, słuchanie Słowa Bożego, sprawowanie sakramentów Pokuty i Eucharys i oraz radosne głoszenie Jezusa Chrystusa jako Pana i Zbawiciela. Znaki ŚDM: Krzyż i Ikona Spotkaniom towarzyszą dwa szczególne znaki podarowane przez Jana Pawła II, którymi są Krzyż Światowych Dni Młodzieży oraz Ikona Matki Bożej Salus Populi Romani. Znaki te nie tylko są z młodymi podczas ŚDM, ale non-stop krążą po świecie, gromadząc na modlitwie i adoracji setki, a nawet tysiące młodych każdego dnia. W Niedzielę Palmową, 13 kwietnia 2014 roku, znaki te Ojciec Święty przekazał w Rzymie polskiej młodzieży i rozpoczęłą się peregrynacja Krzyża ŚDM i Ikony MB po polskich diecezjach oraz kilkunastu krajach Europy Wschodniej. ŚDM - spotkania na temat Każdy ŚDM wymaga dobrego przygotowania pod względem treści, nad którą będą medytować młodzi, gromadząc się na kilka dni w grupach językowych. Tematykę corocznych spotkań określa sam Ojciec Święty, kierując do młodych przesłanie zwane ORĘDZIEM. W czasie ŚDM treści te są pogłębiane podczas trzydniowych spotkań zwanych triduum katechetycznym. Ile czasu trwają ŚDM? ŚDM są spotkaniem wielodniowym. Obecnie mają one dwie zasadnicze części: pierwsza to Dni w Diecezjach, kiedy młodzież przebywa na terenie całego kraju, który jest gospodarzem spotkania; druga to Wydarzenia Centralne, czyli tygodniowy pobyt młodzieży w głównym mieście organizacyjnym. Jak wygląda struktura całego tygodnia ŚDM? Po zakończeniu Dni w Diecezjach, wszyscy udają się do diecezji, którą Ojciec Święty wyznaczył jako miejsce przeżywania wydarzeń centralnych. Młodzież gromadzi się tam na okres całego tygodnia. W poniedziałek przyjeżdża w dane miejsce, we wtorek uczestniczy w ceremonii otwarcia, w środę, czwartek i piątek bierze udział w katechezach i Fes walu Młodych, w sobotę pielgrzymuje na miejsce czuwania i uczestniczy w wieczornym spotkaniu z Papieżem, a w niedzielę bierze udział w uroczystej Mszy św. kończącej dany ŚDM. Wydarzeniom centralnym towarzyszą specjalne strefy spotkań, zwane Strefą Pojednania oraz Targi Powołaniowe. się wraz z podjętą decyzją o uczestnictwie, a kończy wraz z wypełnieniem misji wypływającej z treści danego spotkania. Młodzi i ci, którzy im towarzyszą Wraz z młodzieżą w spotkaniach bierze udział wielu biskupów, duszpasterzy, braci i sióstr zakonnych, osób konsekrowanych, kleryków, nowicjuszy, a od pewnego czasu także świeckich młodych nauczycieli i profesorów akademickich. Na ostatnim ŚDM w Europie (Madryt 2011) zebrało się 800 biskupów, 14 tysięcy prezbiterów i kilka tysięcy osób zakonnych.

I spent a lot of me with my friends in the basement of my folks home when I was a kid. We caused a li le commo on, I suppose, but I can t say I ever heard my father bellow those words in my direc on. Similarly in my recollec on, I never used them to calm my own children down when I was one floor up from them here at home. Oddly, though, I have used the words a number of mes these days with my own employees. I usually work at my desk on the fourth floor of our building, but since all of my team members have direct product responsibility, they are o en on the first floor, where our lab is located.
