We speak of putting in an appearance or showing up. Even when we arrive, we are often distracted. We think ahead, or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at our best when we truly show up. We are most fully ourselves when we are absorbed in something worthy of us: creative work, good conversation, prayer. In these instances we are wholly ourselves and wholly outside ourselves. Elijah knew this kind of engagement. He was one of God s great prophets. In today s first reading, he follows God s command to journey to that most holy place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah encounters God. As for Peter and the apostles, they discover the presence of God after the storm at sea. They and the sea and the winds are stunned into silent reverence. JOSEPH/ FATIMA CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION On Wednesday, August 13th at 7:00pm we will pray our weekly Devotion and Novena to our patron, St. Joseph combined with the candlelight procession. This week the Holy Rosary Sodality will carry the statue from the Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel to the sanctuary. We all need graces and favors so please write your special intentions on the slips provided and place them in the petition box. We are grateful for your offerings. We will also pray the rosary during an outdoor procession (weather permitting) in honor of Our Lady of Fatima. As always, we invite parishioners, friends, organizations and especially the Children of Mary and Altar Servers to take part in this beautiful tribute to our Lady. The flowers in front of the Blessed Mother altar for Our Lady of Fatima are given in memory of Henry Sabaj by his daughter, Betty. DOZYNKI HARVEST FESTIVAL On Sunday, August 17th at 11:00am mass we will bless the traditional Harvest Wreath followed by festivities on our school grounds until 2:00pm. We invite all parishioners their families and friends to join us for our picnic. Polish-American food will be available including pierogi, kapusta, potato pancakes, hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries. There will be activities and games for children, raffles and music. Father Joseph Szwach, recently retired Pastor of St. Andrew Bobola Church in Dudley, will be our guest and you will have the opportunity to thank him for his years of dedicated service to the Church in Webster and Dudley and wish him well in his retirement. SAINT MAXIMILIAN KOLBE This week we will remember the martyrdom of Maximilian Kolbe. Born in Poland, Maximilian chose to serve the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was ordained a priest but poor health curtailed his missionary work in Rome, Japan and India and he returned to Poland. He was arrested by the Germans in 1939 and shipped to Auschwitz prison. He stepped forward to take the place of another prisoner to be executed. On August 14, 1941, the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of our Lady into Heaven, Father Kolbe was martyred by a lethal dose of carbolic acid. Pope Paul VI beatified Father Kolbe and on October 10, 1982, Pope John Paul II declared his compatriot a Saint. As you may know one of the murals in Saint Joseph Basilica depicts St. Maximilian in prisoner garb. SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL Soon our students will be beginning the 2014-Fall semester. We are pleased with the steady weekly increase in enrollment. As we are still accepting registrations, we encourage you to sign up your son or daughter as soon as possible. COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE Restore the Church - Build the Future is the theme for the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe which will be taken up at our Basilica on the weekend of August 16 and 17th. In areas where the economy has grown, there is a pervasive secularism, a lack of Catholic intellectual life, which impoverishes the human spirit. This is another kind of poverty, which the Church needs to address by being present in higher learning and the cultural life. Physical poverty is also addressed by this collection. It funds repair and expansion projects which will provide a safe and welcoming environment. Bishop McManus asks us to keep these programs in our prayers and also by making a generous contribution to support these efforts. FEAST OF OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA will be celebrated on Sunday, August 24th at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA with a Mass in English at 11:00am and Mass in Polish at 12:30pm. Solemn devotion and procession will follow at 3:30pm. Pilgrims from various areas of our country participate in this annual special event. MAKSYMILIAN MARIA KOLBE W tym tygodniu w liturgii wspominamy męczeństwo św. Maksymiliana Marii Kolbego. Ten nasz rodak wybrał służbę Maryi. Po święceniach pragnął służyć w Bogu jako misjonarz. Pracował w Rzymie, Indiach i Japonii, ale problemy ze zdrowiem zmusiły go do powrotu do Polski. Aresztowany przez Niemców w 1939 r. został wysłany do obozu koncentracyjnego w Auchwitz. Zmarł w komorze głodowej, dobity przez zastrzyk z trucizny, w przeddzień święta Wniebowzięcia Maryi. Został kanonizowany przez papieża Pawła VI, zaś papież Jan Paweł II wyniósł go do godności świętych 10 października 1982. Wizerunek św. Maksymiliana znajduje się na suficie naszej Bazyliki. SZKOŁA ŚW. JÓZEFA Już wkrótce dzieci powrócą po wakacjach do szkolnych murów. Ciągle jeszcze jest możliwość dołączenia do grona naszych uczniów. Rodziców, którzy rozważają zapisanie swojego dziecka, prosimy o uczynienie tego tak szybko, jak to tylko możliwe, gdyż z tygodnia na tydzień liczba dostępnych zmniejsza się.
