HOLY MASS INTENTIONS An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: in thanksgiving, for the inten ons of another person or as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died for the souls in purgatory. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one s soul. We find not only the origins of this prac ce da ng to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance. Offering Mass for a special Inten on is a long standing tradi on in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are obtained for whom the Mass is said. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, please contact the Parish Office 773-622-5900 ex. 225. The Masses are available throughout the current year.

January 10, 2016 The Bap sm of the Lord Page Four The Year of Mercy is an invitation an invitation to love, kindness, and unbounded generosity. Pope Francis is offering you the opportunity to encounter the incredible mercy of God. Encountering mercy means encountering God. It can transform your life, your relationships, your work, and your ability to embrace and experience all of life. One of the corporal work of mercy is to comfort the sick. In part, then, to "comfort the sick" means, first of all, to comfort them with something they urgently need: namely, proper medical assistance. Sadly, in the United States today approximately 40 million people have to rely almost exclusively on the hospital emergency rooms for family or personal medical care because they cannot afford to purchase medical insurance. An adequate medical safety net for the poor is s ll badly needed. Of course, there are some people who are "sick" not from physical illness but from social isola on. One thinks especially of the elderly in our communi es who, whether at home or in long-term care facili es, live in geographical isola on from their loved ones. "Visi ng the sick" in our world can mean reaching out to the friendless in our local nursing homes: those who are "sick at heart" from being lonely and forgo en and who are regularly deprived of the basic human need called "friendship." This corporal work of mercy is rela vely easy to do. It takes no extensive background reading in economics and no training in poli cal ac vism to accomplish. The socially isolated elderly are usually not far away. They o en live just around the corner from us, or they are members of our own parish. Most of all, do not forget that some of them may even be members of your own family, rela ves too much overlooked and too o en forgo en. Visi ng the housebound elderly and the chronically and terminally ill is no easy task. Trying to do it on a regular basis can take us right out of our "comfort zones" because it confronts us with real human lives for which, in earthly terms, there seems to be so li le hope. Such people o en live in squalor and with the constant stench of sickness or the wince of chronic pain. But our mere presence, as someone willing to be a friend and a listening ear, can mean much more to them than we can imagine, and along the way they will be giving a precious gi to us as well: the gi of growth in the virtue of compassion HOSPITAL VISITS: If you or a loved one are in the hospital and would like a visit from our ministers, deacons or priests, you must call the rectory and request a visit. The privacy law states that the hospital cannot provide a list when we come o visit our parishioners. And even if they do, pa ents that come to the hospital through the Emergency Room never get their parish listed it s not one of the emergency ques ons. Even though hospital personnel can call the parish a the pa ent s request, it is best for the pa ent or a family member to call us at 773-622-5900.

This year, the theme of the Appeal is The Hand of God s Mercy. We have all received God s mercy. By inancially supporting the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we help to extend God s mercy to many, many others. As you review the mailing from Archbishop Cupich, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. January 10, 2016 The Bap sm of the Lord Page Thirteen ON THE BAPTISM OF JESUS, AND A PRAYERFUL NEW YEAR Copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) In considering the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord, I m reminded of a joke I heard once. Two boys are out playing in puddles a er a rain. The older boy shoves the younger boy s face into one of them. The boy comes up wet, but laughing. Why d you do that to your li le brother? the mom says in anger to the older boy. We were playing church, Mommy, he says. I was bap zing him in the name of the Father, the Son and in the hole-he-goes. Through more serious reflec on, though (prompted by Luke s Gospel account of Christ s bap sm), I wondered the other day how each of the evangelists handled this history. I m no theologian/biblical scholar, but as a writer, I find it interes ng--and enlightening--to see how different authors approach the same story. While John writes of the Bap st bearing witness to Christ and nothing of the bap sm per se, the others capture the event. Per Ma hew, Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be bap zed by him A er Jesus was bap zed, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased, and per Mark, It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was bap zed in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came down from the heavens You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. While dissimilar, close. And a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased. Like Mark, Luke has the voice saying You are my beloved Son, vs. Ma hew s, This is my beloved Son. But Luke doesn t specify that John bap zed Jesus. Luke alone confirms that the Spirit descended dove-like in bodily form. But the enlightening part is that the voice and the dove are manifested only when Jesus is out of the water and in prayer. Even nontheologians/non-scriptures scholars like me don t have to look very far to see that for Jesus, prayer is a way of life. I won t quote chapter and verse here, but we know from various passages that Jesus some mes prayed all night. He got up early to pray. He prayed before feeding the thousands. He prayed when he was red. He prayed before raising Lazarus. He prayed in the Garden. He prayed hanging on the tree. He prayed with his final breath. Jesus taught us how to pray, true, when he gave us the Lord s Prayer. But he also taught us what it means to be a person of prayer. We re se ling into the New Year, and some of us are making resolu ons along the lines of being a be er person. Inspired by Luke s version of the Bap sm of Christ, I m asking God to help me be more (prayerfully) faithful. In the name of the Father, the Son and in the hole-he-goes.
