INTERMODAL INFRASTRUCTURE DEFINITIONS Intermodal transportation terminal is a facility with linear infrastructure for at least two transport modes and reloading equipment for intermodal load carrying units i.e. containers, semitrailers, and swap bodies exchangeable between different transportation vehicles and places for their storage. Logistics center is an object with spatial infrastructure and organization, which are carrying out logistic services associated with receiving, storage and distribution of goods and associated services provided by independent with respect to the sender or recipient operators. 8
LOGISTICS CENTERS IN POLAND There are four logistic centres in Poland that meet Western European standards. Their location resulted from local initiatives only, and their development was not supported by the state in the systematic way. That is why their organisations, level of development and availability of basic logistic infrastructure components much differs from each other. Wielkopolskie Centrum Logistyczne Konin Stare Miasto S.A., Śląskie Centrum Logistyki S.A. w Gliwicach, Euroterminal Sławków Sp. z o.o., Centrum Logistyczno Inwestycyjne Poznań (CLIP Logistics Sp. z o.o.). The existing centres neither cooperate with each other, nor undertake initiatives for development of the national intermodal logistic network. 9

ASSESSMENT OF TERMINALS TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS Aassessment of transport connections of existing container terminals performed by experts from the Institute of Logistics and Warehousing Location Kobylnica Gądki Swarzędz-Jasin Assessment of transport connections Poor Very good Good The container terminal in Gądki has the best connections with existing road infrastructure. The reconstruction of the national road no. 11 (Poznań Kórnik section) to bring its parameters up to those of the fast traffic road S11 was completed in June 2008. As part of the reconstruction project, the investor provided convenient access between the terminal and the S11 road, and then to all required destinations. Access to the terminal in Kobylnica does not meet the needs of multi-ton cargo, while container transport is in conflict with normal traffic taking place along the local road used by the area s residents. CLIP is situated next to the national road no. 92 (Poznań Konin) and 12 km from A2 Berlin Warsaw route. CLiP is located in trans European railway corridor E20 Paris Moscow. 16

CONCLUSIONS (1) To facilitate land access to seaports by extension of multimodal transport infrastructure To retain some rail sidetrack sites for future manufacturing and logistic project development To select locations for full-size intermodal reloading terminals in zones of concentration of storage that is currently not served by rail To familiarize authorities with knowledge of planning decisions impact on the transportation and logistic business, to facilitate the decision-making More outlays are necessary not only on current maintenance of railway infrastructure, but also on new capital expenditure projects 29
CONCLUSIONS (2) Intermodal transportation using block trains may be competitive and take over a significant portion of cargo from long haul road transportation EAST WEST connection (RBGC) More cooperation is necessary between seperate intermodal transportation terminals The container terminal POLZUG in Gądki as a potential participant of pilot project within WP6 (a very dynamic development of the company, an extensive network of transport routes) 30
