21 ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Spoczywa na was niezwykłe powołanie. Wybierając spośród was siostrę Faustynę, Chrystus uczynił wasze zgromadzenie stróżem tego miejsca, a równocześnie wezwał do szczególnego apostolstwa Jego miłosierdzia. Proszę was, podejmujcie to dzieło. Poratuje? Wskaże na swegop Syna? Niech dzisiejsze i jutrzjesze świętowanie umocni nasze wspólne więzi, jak radość bycia dzieckiem w ramionach Matki Boskiej Częstochwskiej. Ks. Robert Będziński September 1 - World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. September 1, 2017 Two years ago, Pope Francis declared Catholics would join their Orthodox brothers and sisters and other Christians to formally mark September 1 as the annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. AUGUST 25 TH, 2019 Praised be Lord Jesus Christ! Today we gather as a parish family for our next festival. It is a multigenerational family, as usual. Some people remember the beginnings of school, the number of priests, shared stories that connect, lead to emotions, strengthen bonds. This fest will definitely bring us closer together, maybe it will let us look together into the future. Today, we are also gathered by one of the patrons of our shrine - sister Faustina, secretary of God's Mercy. Very modest, and recognizable all over the world, thanks to the mission and role that the Lord Jesus gave her. He chose a woman of poor health to show that "power in weakness improves" to show love to poor. This little "spark" is to prepare the world for the final coming of Christ. God wants to be merciful, so why not to take advantage of it? Every day we can obtain a plenary indulgence in our church, along the way of the cross and the rosary, and call on God's mercy before the Mass in the prayer of the chaplet of Divine Mercy, and on the litany to that divine attribute. John Paul II in Łagiewniki said so: "Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy "(Mt 5, 7). You have an extraordinary calling. By choosing Sister Faustina from among you, Christ made your congregation the watchman of this place, and at the same time called for a special apostolate of His mercy. Please, take this work. Today's man needs your testimony of mercy, he needs your works of mercy, he needs your prayer for mercy." I think that the Holy Father also wants to give this mission to us here in Salem. Tomorrow we also want to meet our Mother who defends the gate in Jasna Góra... Fathers from the Society of Christ take her picture with them into the world following the example of Polish emigrants around the world. Who, if not Mother, will comfort you and help you? Who will lead you better to Jesus? Let today's and tomorrow's celebrations strengthen our mutual bonds, like the joy of being a child in the arms of the Mother of God. Fr. Robert Będziński 1 września Światowy Dzień Modlitw o Ochronę Stworzenia. W roku 2017 Papież Franciszek ustanowił Światowy Dzień Modlitw o Ochronę Stworzenia. Jest on obchodzony w Kościele katolickim w dniu 1 września, tak jak ma to już miejsce w Kościele prawosławnym. Jest to dzień dziękowania Bogu za wspaniałe dzieło, które powierzył naszej trosce
OUR LADY OF CZĘSTOCHOWA The icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa has been intimately associated with Poland for the past 600 years. Its history prior to its arrival in Poland is shrouded in numerous legends which trace the icon's origin to St. Luke who painted it on a cedar table top from the house of the Holy Family. The same legend holds that the painting was discovered in Jerusalem in 326 by St. Helena, who brought it back to Constantinople and presented it to her son, Constantine the Great. The oldest documents from Jasna Góra state that the picture travelled from Constantinople via Belz. Eventually it came into the possession of Władysław Opolczyk, Duke of Opole, and adviser to Louis of Anjou, King of Poland and Hungary. Ukrainian sources state that earlier in its history it was brought to Belz with much ceremony and honors by King Lev I of Galicia and later taken by Władysław from the Castle of Belz, when the town was incorporated into the Polish kingdom. A popular story tells that in late August 1384, Ladislaus was passing Częstochowa with the picture when his horses refused to go on. He was advised in a dream to leave the icon at Jasna Góra. THE PAINTING - The painting of the Virgin belongs to the type of icons. This wood painting represents the bust of the Virgin who carries Jesus in her arms. The face of the Virgin stands out in that whoever looks at the painting is found immersed in Mary s gaze: the pilgrim looks at Mary who looks back. The Child also faces the pilgrim but with a fixed look. Both faces have serious and pensive expressions, giving the painting an emotional tone. Two parallel scratches crossed by a third mark the Virgin s right cheek. Her neck shows six other scratches, two of which are visible, whereas the other four can barely be seen. In the image, Jesus wears a scarlet tunic and rests on His Mother s right arm as a makeshift throne in order to be seated. The Child s left arm holds a book, and the right arm is raised as if he was giving his blessing. The Virgin s hand rests on his chest, points to the Child, and appears to tell us: Pay attention to my Child Jesus. The brightness of their apparel contrasts with the dark colors of their faces. A star with six vertices is depicted on Mary s forehead. Both the Virgin and Jesus have golden halos. Given the dark color of the face and hands of Our Lady, the image has been fondly called the Black Virgin, Her darkness can be attributed to many reasons, one being the poor conditions of the places where she has been hidden to safeguard her. In addition, numerous candles have been lit before her, causing her to be constantly amidst smoke. In the image, the wounds on her face were caused by some bandits who tried to steal the image in 1430. The wound on her throat was caused by the Tartars who besieged the castle of Belz; one of the enemy s arrows went through the Chapel s window and hit the icon. The two cuts on the cheek of the Virgin, along with the harm previously caused by the spear through her throat, always reappear despite the repeated attempts to restore the image. MIRACULOUS IMAGE Throughout the history of the icon, our Blessed Mother has manifested her powerful intercession in the midst of many dangers. One of the most well-known occurred on September 14th, 1920 when the Russian army set up camp near the Vistula River, where they were preparing to invade the city of Warsaw. As a result, the people turned to the Virgin Mary. The next day on the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Russian army withdrew its troops after an image of the Virgin appeared in a cloud over the city. The Polish refer to this victory as The Miracle of Vistula. At the end of the seventeenth century, there were a series of deadly epidemics that swept their way through Europe, including Poland. However, the city of Częstochowa was never touched by any. The Pauline fathers prepared for them, but they never came. These are just a few of the many miracles attributed to the icon and the intercession of Our Lady. The record of all the miracles attributed to this icon is kept by the Pauline fathers in Częstochowa. Joyfully honor St. Maria Faustina Kowalska today on her birth date August 25 is the anniversary of the birth of Helena Kowalska, Saint Sister Faustina, the world-famous Apostle of Divine Mercy. She was born in 1905 as the third child in the family of Marianna and Stanisław Kowalski in the village of Głogowiec. The baptism record states that she was born at eight in the morning on a Friday. Sister Faustina's mother mentioned that she had sanctified her womb, because she had miscarriages with her previous pregnancies. After Faustina was born more children were born without problems. Her mother said about Helena: "Blessed child, beloved daughter." Sister Faustina constantly thanked God for her parents, who were God-fearing, righteous and hardworking people. They raised their children in the spirit of faith and love of God and people. 25 sierpnia br. przypada rocznica urodzin Helenki Kowalskiej św. Natomiast Siostra Faustyna nieustannie dziękowała Bogu za swoich rodziców, ludzi bogobojnych, prawych i pracowitych, którzy wychowywali swoje dzieci w duchu wiary i miłości Boga i ludzi.
Saint John Paul II Shrine of Divine Mercy 28 St. Peter Street Salem, MA 01970 THE NEW ALTAR and IMPROVEMENTS IN OUR SHRINE Plans are underway for the new altar at our shrine. The Shrine has been blessed by the financial support from many donors. An amount of $60,000 has been raised to cover the cost of the altar. We also received a donation to cover the cost of the two images on either side of the altar. Currently the altar is being constructed in Poland and it will be sent here by ship. There s also an HVAC system in our plans to make the upper church more comfortable and also to fight with moisture in the upper church. We are also thinking about an elevator/lift to make our upper church available for everyone where the main altar with all the relics will be installed. We want it to be available for everyone so the next step is to make handicap bathrooms accessible. In the meantime, there is work to be done in preparation for the new altar. The masonry outside the church has been repaired as well as several small roof leaks. New gutters have been installed on the rectory. The inside walls behind the altar have been sealed and painted. The presbytery will have to be painted before the altar is installed. These repairs and renovations are costly and we need to raise funds for this purpose. You may also notice new insulated windows in the assembly room and the upper sacristy. These are a great improvement which will save on heating and cooling costs. There is also new fencing in front of the church. We are also in the process of looking to reopen our school building. This is a daunting task as the building needs major renovations. There are many men in the shrine community who have offered their time and skills to complete these projects. We would only have to pay for materials. In order to have heat and water in the school the pipes need to be repaired. The Archdiocese will cover this cost through insurance; however, we must have the asbestos covering the pipes removed. Asbestos removal is also necessary on the boiler and in the cafeteria. The second collections are presently held for this reason. I am grateful to those who, through spiritual and physical help, engage in the development of our church and school buildings. We wish to have the shrine attract many people who will find spiritual fulfillment and become disciples sharing the word of Christ to others. Thank you again for your kindness, prayers and financial support. May God bless you all. Please contact: Rector of the Shrine, Fr.
