Page Two August 9, 2009 Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979 July 9, 2009 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland has come to the aid of the Church in Poland with the generous support of people in the Archdiocese of Chicago since 1943. The Pontifical College and the Pontifical Institute in Rome, as well as the Polish Seminary in Paris, provide advanced education of the clergy so they may be trained to move into leadership roles in dioceses and seminaries in Poland. These centers of learning rely on the annual subsidy of over $300,000 from the Catholic League. Without the assistance of the Catholic League, it would be nearly impossible to maintain these institutions. The Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland also responds to requests for assistance from diocesan bishops seeking help for hospitals, orphanages and parishes in Poland. Traditionally, the Catholic League s Annual Appeal has been taken up in parishes on the weekend nearest the Feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa, August 26. (This collection in our parish will take place next weekend, August 15 and 16.) Through the assistance of your parish s special collection or your individual contributions, the Church in Poland can continue its strong practice of the Catholic faith. Individual donations may be mailed to the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland, 1400 S. Austin Blvd., Cicero, IL 60804. Much depends on our united effort. I thank you for your generosity in the name of the faithful in Poland. Prosimy o przesyłanie indywidualnych ofiar bezpośrednio na adres: Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland, 1400 S. Austin Blvd., Cicero, IL 60804. Wiele zależy od naszego wspólnego wysiłku, stąd w imieniu wszystkich wiernych w Polsce, z serca dziękuję za złożone ofiary. Szczerze oddany w Chrystusie, Francis Kardynał George, O.M.I. Arcybiskup Chicago

Page Four August 9, 2009 School Building Improvements As you were informed, in the month of June when we had a torrential rain storm, the lower level of the school building flooded for the second time in ten months. Some of the flooding came through the toilets, but a good portion came through the foundation of the building which dates to 1927. Since then, our insurance company has made the necessary repairs less our insurance deductible. Carpeting and tile have been removed and replaced and water soaked plaster walls have also been replaced. However, our insurance company informed us that, because much of the damage is due to the fragile nature of the foundation of the building (primarily on the west side of the school building), we, as a parish, are responsible for repairs to the foundation as general maintenance. If these repairs were not made, the insurance company informed us that it would not fund such repairs in the future. So, with no alternative, our parish was forced to make these repairs to the 82 year old foundation. Thankfully, Janusz Warzecha, the general contractor of Citi Builders Construction, Inc., who built the grotto outside our church, agreed to make the repairs at minimal cost. A more than seven foot deep trench was dug along the foundation wall. The opening found numerous major cracks and holes in the foundation of the building. When some of the brickwork was removed, we found that some of the inner brickwork had actually melded together under the weight of the structure. This is understandable since the building was originally designed to house a lower level church and one floor above it. The second level was added some years later as an auditorium which was later converted into classrooms. All of that weight contributes to the stress on the foundation. To remedy the problem, all of the holes and cracks were sealed with industrial grade sealant and covered over with metal coated sheathing and tar. As the trench was dug, standing water was found. To eliminate such standing water at the base of the foundation, piping was installed which now drains directly into the sewer. More than two feet of outer brick work needed to be replaced. I personally went to the brickyard near Pulaski and Palmer to choose bricks closest to the original. I was astounded at the price of even simple bricks! If you are a homeowner, you know full well that, when you start a repair project, there are always hidden problems after you begin. For our parish buildings which age from 52 to 82 years old, the same can be said but only on a much grander scale than in your own home. I hope that you are pleased that I have been a thrifty and good steward of our parish buildings and hope that you will keep in mind these costly repairs next month when you consider a donation to our Capital Improvement Collection. I know that these are trying and anxious financial times but I want each of you to know how deeply grateful I am for all that you do to keep St. Priscilla Parish a bright, shining star in the Archdiocese of Chicago. May God Bless you all! Father Idzi, Pastor
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five REPAIRS OF OUR SCHOOL BUILDING S WEST WALL Large Hole Crack #1 Above and below we see the depth to which the construction team had to dig to fix our foundation. Also visible below is the large 10-in hole found in the foundation. In the picture above, we see one of the two large cracks found in the foundation of our school building. Through these cracks, water was seeping into the school. Because of the water that was seeping into the school through the cracks, the building s bricks were eroded over the years. To the left is a glimpse of what the construction crew saw upon peeling away the outer layer of brick in our school building. Crack #2 Large Hole Along the west wall, our school foundation was dug up to a depth of 6 feet and, after filling in the cracks with sealant, the foundation was covered with the metal-coated sheathing. To the left, we see Janusz Warzecha standing to the far left, with two members of his crew. To the right, we see the bricklayer of the construction crew laying new bricks bricks which will not absorb water.
Page Six August 9, 2009 Religious Education News REGISTRATION INFORMATION The rectory office is prepared to take registration for Religious Education classes. The office has all necessary forms that need to be filled out. The tuition for Religious Education is as follows: CAN YOU HELP? Although we are in the middle of summer and the thought of starting a new Religious Education school year may seem a bit premature, it is never too soon to begin planning for our wonderful students who are in need of individuals who are willing to share their faith. We are looking for individuals who love their faith and want to make a difference in a child s faith formation. I believe we have people in our parish who are willing to bring the Word of God to children who cannot attend a Catholic School. Won t you please help us by volunteering as a catechist so that we can continue to accept all of the children who come to us? For those of you who are a little afraid of teaching, be aware that the archdiocese offers classes for new catechists to help prepare you to teach. We are in need of three teachers for the coming year. PLEASE HELP!! If you are interested, please call the rectory at 773-545-8840 and leave your name and phone number and I will return your call. -Judy Banasiak, CRE- 1 child $160.00 2 children $240.00 3 children $290.00 There is also a $30.00 registration fee that is required for each child. Ideally, we would like to have the tuition paid in full, but realistically, I know this cannot be done by most families. I am asking that the registration fee be paid when the child/children are registered. The rest of the tuition can be paid in monthly installments. If you cannot register at the rectory, we will be having registration after all the Masses on August 29th and 30th and September 5th and 6th. Classes will begin on Saturday, September 12, at 9:00 AM.
