PAGE TWO From the Desk of Fr. Joe Greetings and Blessings, As the second candle on the Advent wreath is lighted, our time of watching and waiting continues. Again, I m actually preaching to myself, let us stay calm and focused of the true meaning of the upcoming great Feast. As one of my former professors of moral theology often says, Do what you can, not what you can t. Thank you, Fr. Kurt, for those words of wisdom. At the recent meeting of our Evangelization Committee, we shared our hope of continuing to build COMMUNITY here at St. Stanislaus, by trying to reach out to all of the various groups of the Basilica tapestry: our elders and home-bound, our married couples/families, our youth, and those who may wish to join our parish family. We can be proud of the extensive ministries we offer, especially among them Adoration of the Holy Eucharist, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, outreach to the poor and homebound, a diverse and solid Catholic Elementary School, and hopefully our on-going hospitality to those who come to worship with us on Front Street. I continue to be impressed with the generosity of our people. Response to the annual HELP collection for fuel, heating, snow removal, etc. has been very inspiring. Our Finance and Facilities Committees of the Parish Council will continue to meet together, as we refine our list of priorities and needs for repairs, projects, and preventative maintenance. I also get an update on calls/concerns from those who have questions about the overall Parish. I address them openly at the Parish Council meeting. Several members of the Council and others of the Parish have said to me already: You will never make everyone happy. I best not respond to those words of wisdom, as there is not enough space in the bulletin. Again, I turn to Fr. Kurt s words of wisdom, Do what you can, not what you can t. Is there anyone in the Basilica Family who has some time, energy, and maybe a touch of experience to consider reorganizing and giving some attention to our Parish Library in the Lower Basilica? Please let me know. The library is a great asset to our efforts at evangelization and a wonderful resource for spiritual renewal. I hope the small Christmas gift for each family, Daybreaks, Reflections for Advent and Christmas is helpful in your Advent Journey. Peace and all good! Friar Joe RECITATION OF THE ROSARY - Join us for our communal recitation of the Rosary Monday through Friday at 7:00, 8:15 and 11:30 a.m. in the Lower Basilica. This annual appeal benefits 31,000 elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests women and men who have consecrated their lives to serving God and the Church. During the 2018 World Day for Consecrated Life, Pope Francis remarked, There is no growth without roots and no flowering without new buds. 1 This analogy has certainly born out within the life of the Church in the United States. Senior religious were the roots that established Catholic schools, hospitals, and social service agencies allowing generations of Catholics to flourish. Today, the example of older religious inspires younger members to persevere in mission and ministry. Yet many religious communities struggle to provide for aging members. Most elder religious served for small stipends, leaving a large gap in retirement savings. Rising health-care costs and decreased income compound the struggle to provide adequate care. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides vital funding for medications, nursing care, and more. It also helps religious congregations implement long-range retirement strategies, even as they continue to serve the People of God. I recognize this is but one of numerous worthy causes in need of assistance; I ask simply that you give what you can. In thanksgiving for their faithful service, please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious and in praying for God s blessing on our nation s elderly religious. In Christ, Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski, Bishop of Springfield Weekly Stewardship Report Good stewards believe that God, who has begun this good work in them, will carry it through to completion. B I U L E T Y N Parafialny - 9 grudzien 2018 II NIEDZIELA ADWENTU - ROK C Wyobraźmy sobie taką sytuację. W dodatku w opakowaniu sprzed 2000 lat. Przecież słowa te pokazują naszą grzeszność i bałagan życiowy, wskazują na Tego, którego mam kochać ponad życie i jemu to życie podporządkować. BIULETYN Parafialny ADHORTACJA APOSTOLSKA OJCA ŚWIĘTEGO FRANCISZKA GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE O POWOŁANIU DO ŚWIĘTOŚCI W ŚWIECIE WSPÓŁCZESNYM 59. Z pewnością dwa: Pan i bliźni. Te dwa bogactwa nie zanikną! [65]. 62. I chociaż to orędzie Jezusa nas pociąga, to jednak świat prowadzi nas do innego stylu życia. Prosimy by w tych godzinach był ktoś obecny. Szczególnie potrzebujemy ludzi od 9:00 do 10:30 AM. Aby uzyskać więcej informacji, prosimy o kontakt z biurem parafialnym.

CHRISTMAS DECORATING - As you know we are blessed to have the Basilica decorated so very beautifully for Christmas. As you can well imagine that takes a great deal of time and effort. We could use many helping hands. The regular sized trees and manger scene will begin to be set up on Monday, December 17th at 9:00 a.m. unless there is a funeral which would likely delay the start time to around 11:00 a.m. We could use a few good men to help with those endeavors. On Monday, December 17th and Thursday, December 20th at 6:00 p.m. the rest of the decorating will take place, with the bulk of it happening on Thursday, when we could use many people who will help with all of the poinsettias. Please call the office at 594-6669 if you can help. LESSONS AND CAROLS 2018 - The Nativity Story as Told in Scripture and Song to be held on Sunday, December 9th at 3:00 pm. at St. Theresa s Church, South Hadley. This free event will take place at St. Theresa's Church, 9 East Parkview Drive, South Hadley. All ages are welcome! The church provides ample parking and is handicap accessible. THE 18TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF LESSONS & CAROLS will be celebrated on Saturday, December 15th, 7:30 PM, at the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, 260 State Street in Springfield. Join the Cathedral Choir of Boys & Adults for this annual service that has become a central part of Christmas preparation for many. The Cathedral Choir will be accompanied by strings, hand bells and the mighty cathedral organ. Highlights of the service will include the Gloria and Et In Terra Pax from a rarely heard Gloria by Vivaldi and the original version of Rejoice in the Lord Always by Henry Purcell. The service consists of seven scripture readings of the season paired with congregational carols and choral anthems. The service begins in darkness and as the story of the nativity progresses the candles and lights of the cathedral are lit.
