Jesus raises three people from the dead in the Gospel stories: the daughter of Jairus, the son of the widow of Naim, and Lazarus. In the symbolic language of the Gospels, these physical resuscitations are suggestive of spiritual raisings from sin to spiritual health. St. Augustine says that the young girl, who dies inside her house, symbolizes the sin that takes place in our thoughts and our hearts but that has not yet borne fruit in action. The son of the widow of Naim, carried to the gate of the house, represents sin that has expressed itself concretely in action. This dead man is raised and given back to his mother, who stands for the Church. Thirdly, we have the case of Lazarus. He stands for the worst kind of moral/spiritual corruption: sin that has been expressed in the world and become embedded in habit. This is the sin that has routinely set in to our lives. The raising of Lazarus takes place just before the Passion, just before the climactic moment when Jesus defeats death by succumbing to it. When told that Lazarus has died, Jesus says, Our beloved Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him (John 11:11). With these words, he signifies we are in a new world. Within the confines of the old world, the old consciousness, death is ultimate, and its very finality gives it its power, but referring to it as sleep, Jesus is signaling that through God s power and according to God s purpose, death is not ultimate; it is not the final word. When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. This is to signal that there is no mistake; the man is truly and definitively dead. But this is no concern for the one who transcends both space and time, whose power stretches beyond life and death as we know them. Martha comes out to meet Jesus and shows her belief in his identity and power: Lord, if you had been here, my brother never would have died. Even now, I am sure that God will give you whatever you ask him. Jesus replies, Your brother will rise again I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:21-25). God hates death and doesn t want its deceptive finality to ruin human life. Coming to Lazarus s tomb, Jesus feels the deepest emotions and begins to weep. This is God entering into the darkness, confusion and agony of the death of sinners. He doesn t casually stand above our situation, but rather takes it on and feels it. But then, like a warrior, he approaches the enemy. Take away the stone, he directs. Those who are stuck within the confines of this world protest, Lord, surely there will be a stench. They are saying, Don t mess with death; you can t reverse it. Its power is final. Jesus is undaunted. He commands, Lazarus, come out! This is the voice, not simply of a hopeful human being, not simply of a great religious figure; this is the voice of God who hates death and has dominion over it. And therefore The dead man came out. Jesus finally says, Untie him and let him go free. Just as he freed Lazarus, so Jesus liberates us from our sinfulness. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the way to be untied and set free. Over 100 volunteers have worked extremely hard on the Outdoor Procession of the Living Stations of the Cross. This parish event is on Good Friday at 7pm and is in both English and Polish. It is a powerful devotion that should not be missed. All are invited! Additional envelopes for Easter offerings and Easter Flowers and decorations are available in the back of the church for anyone wishing to make a donation for our parish for the Easter season. The Priest Christians around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land. Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. As a pontifical collection requested by Pope, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. THE END AND THE BEGINNING The blessing of the Easter food is an old catholic tradition, very much still present in Poland and some other countries. It is also becoming more and more popular in the parishes in the United States. The purpose of the blessing is that a person is grateful to God for all His gifts of both: nature and grace, and, as a token of this gratitude, has the food of his table sanctified with the hope that spring, the season of the Resurrection, will also be blessed by God's goodness and mercy. The usual fare on the Easter table includes ham and kielbasa (in Poland), cakes of all kinds - particularly babka; eggs - some shelled or some decorated. There is usually a Paschal Lamb or "Baranek" made of butter, some cheese, horseradish, salt, vinegar and oil. The food is brought to the church and blessed by the parish priest on Holy Saturday. After the blessing, the food is usually set aside until Easter morning when the head of the house shares the blessed egg, symbol of life, with family and friends. Having exchanged wishes, all continue to enjoy a hearty meal. This centuries old custom is indeed richly symbolic and beautiful. It is one in which the whole family can participate and help prepare. May this tradition endure for many generations to come. All of you can enjoy this beautiful custom by participating at the blessing of the Easter food. This is an excellent way to teach the younger members of your family about this treasured catholic tradition. Maslo / Butter: This dairy product is often shaped into a lamb (Baranek Wielkanocny), reminding us of the goodness of Christ that we should have toward all things. Chleb / Easter Bread: A round rye loaf topped with a cross, symbolic of Jesus, the Bread of Life. Chrzan / Horseradish: Symbolic of the Passion of Christ still in our minds, but sweetened with some sugar because of the Resurrection. (May be white or pink [w/grated red beets].) Jajka / Eggs and Pisanki: Indicate new life and Christ's Resurrection from the Tomb. Kielbasa / Sausage: A spicy sausage of pork products, indicative of God's favor and generosity. Szynka / Ham: Symbolic of great joy and abundance. (In addition to the large ham cooked for the Easter Meal, often a special small ham, called the Szynka Wielkanocna) is purchased specially for Swieconka basket.) Slonina / Smoked Bacon: A symbol of the overabundance of God's mercy and generosity. Sol / Salt: So necessary an element in our physical life, that Jesus used its symbolism: "You are the salt of the earth." Ser / Cheese: Shaped into a ball, it is the symbol of the moderation Christians should have. Holy Water: It is used to bless the home, animals, fields and used in religious rituals throughout the year. A candle, often marked like the Paschal Candle lit during the Easter Vigil, is inserted into the basket to represent Christ, Light of the World. A colorful ribbon and sometimes sprigs of greenery are attached. The linen cover is drawn over the top and is ready for the trek to the blessing.
