4 Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist August 29 The drunken oath of a king with a shallow sense of honor, a seductive dance and the hateful heart of a queen combined to bring about the martyrdom of John the Baptist. The greatest of prophets suffered the fate of so many Old Testament prophets before him: rejection and martyrdom. The voice crying in the desert did not hesitate to accuse the guilty, did not hesitate to speak the truth. But why? What possesses a man that he would give up his very life? This great religious reformer was sent by God to prepare the people for the Messiah. His vocation was one of selfless giving. The only power that he claimed was the Spirit of Yahweh. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matthew 3:11). Scripture tells us that many people followed John looking to him for hope, perhaps in anticipation of some great messianic power. John never allowed himself the false honor of receiving these people for his own glory. He knew his calling was one of preparation. When the time came, he led his disciples to Jesus: The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, Behold, the Lamb of God. The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus (John 1:35-37). It is John the Baptist who has pointed the way to Christ. John s life and death were a giving over of self for God and other people. His simple style of life was one of complete detachment from earthly possessions. His heart was centered on God and the call that he heard from the Spirit of God speaking to his heart. Confident of God s grace, he had the courage to speak words of condemnation or repentance, of salvation. Each of us has a calling to which we must listen. No one will ever repeat the mission of John, and yet all of us are called to that very mission. It is the role of the Christian to witness to Jesus. Whatever our position in this world, we are called to be disciples of Christ. By our words and deeds, others should realize that we live in the joy of knowing that Jesus is Lord. We do not have to depend upon our own limited resources, but can draw strength from the vastness of Christ s saving grace. Concedi a noi con la sua intercessione, e secondo la Tua volontà, le grazie che Ti chiediamo..., nella speranza che egli possa essere presto annoverato fra i tuoi santi. Facciamo questa preghiera tramite Gesù Cristo, Tuo figlio, che vive e regna con Te in unità allo Spirito Santo, unico Dio, per sempre nei secoli dei secoli. Amen

5 Męczeństwo św. Jana Chrzciciela Drodzy bracia i siostry, obchody męczeństwa św. Jana Chrzciciela przypominają również nam, współczesnym chrześcijanom, że nie jest możliwy kompromis z miłością do Chrystusa, do Jego słowa, do Prawdy. Prawda jest Prawdą, nie ma kompromisu. Życie chrześcijańskie wymaga, że tak powiem, «męczeństwa» codziennej wierności Ewangelii, a więc odwagi, potrzebnej, by pozwolić Chrystusowi, by wzrastał w nas i nadawał kierunek naszym myślom i uczynkom. Może to nastąpić w naszym życiu tylko wtedy, kiedy więź z Bogiem jest mocna. Modlitwa nie jest czasem straconym, nie jest odbieraniem czasu działaniu, nawet apostolskiemu, a wręcz przeciwnie: tylko wtedy, gdy potrafimy pielęgnować życie modlitwy wiernej, stałej i ufnej, Bóg da nam zdolności i siłę, by żyć w sposób szczęśliwy i pogodny, pokonywać trudności i z odwagą dawać Mu świadectwo. Niech św. Jan Chrzciciel wstawia się za nami, abyśmy potrafili zawsze dawać pierwszeństwo Bogu w naszym życiu. Jan Chrzciciel jest jedynym świętym, którego Kościół czci w ciągu roku dwukrotnie: 24 czerwca w uroczystość jego narodzenia, i 29 sierpnia we wspomnienie jego męczeńskiej śmierci. Oficjalna modlitwa na Jubileuszowy Rok Miłosierdzia 2015/1016 Panie Jezu Chryste, Ty nauczyłeś nas, abyśmy byli miłosierni, jak Ojciec nasz niebieski i powiedziałeś nam, że kto widzi Ciebie, widzi także i Jego. Ukaż nam Twoje oblicze, a będziemy zbawieni. Twój wzrok pełen miłości uwolnił Zacheusza oraz Mateusza od niewoli pieniądza, a nierządnicę i Magdalenę od szukania szczęścia wyłącznie w rzeczach stworzonych. Wzrok ten sprawił, że Piotr zapłakał po zdradzie, a żałujący Dobry Łotr usłyszał zapewnienie o Raju. Pozwól nam tak wysłuchać słów, które wypowiedziałeś do Samarytanki, jakbyś je wypowiedział do każdego nas: O, gdybyś znała dar Boży! Ty, który jesteś Obliczem widzialnym Ojca niewidzialnego, Boga, który objawia swoją wszechmoc przede wszystkim przez przebaczenie i miłosierdzie: spraw, aby Kościół na świecie stał się widzialnym obliczem Ciebie, swojego Pana zmartwychwstałego i uwielbionego. Ty zechciałeś również, aby Twoi słudzy przybrani byli w słabość po to, aby mogli okazywać słuszne współczucie tym, którzy trwają w niewiedzy i błędzie: niech każda osoba, która się do nich zwraca, czuje się oczekiwana, kochana oraz doświadcza przebaczenia od Boga. Poślij Twojego Ducha i uświęć wszystkich nas Jego namaszczeniem, aby Jubileusz Miłosierdzia był rokiem łaski od Pana, a Twój Kościół z odnowionym entuzjazmem mógł nieść dobrą nowinę ubogim, głosić wolność więźniom i uciśnionym oraz przywracać wzrok niewidomym. Prosimy o to za wstawiennictwem Maryi, Matki Miłosierdzia, Ciebie, który z Ojcem i Duchem Świętym żyjesz i królujesz na wieki wieków. Amen
