Tobin, C.Ss.R., will be installed as the sixth Archbishop of Newark on Friday, January 6th, at 2:30 pm at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. This is an historic event for us as he is the first member of a religious order to shepherd the diocese as well as the first member of the College of Cardinals. All the faithful are invited to the celebration of the Mass of Installation. The general, open seating will be on a first come basis with the Cathedral Basilica opening at approximately 11:00 am. The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark sponsors support groups for Parents Grieving the Death of a Child. The groups are led by trained facilitators - parents who have personally experienced the death of a child. Groups meet at St. Thomas the Apostle Church Parish Center, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield, NJ, on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm (July and August is 7:00 pm) and at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Rectory Basement, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge, NJ, on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 pm. 4 January 1 The Story of Mary, Mother of God Mary s divine motherhood broadens the Christmas spotlight. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God s invitation conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:26-38). Elizabeth proclaims: Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Luke 1:42-43, emphasis added). Mary s role as mother of God places her in a unique position in God s redemptive plan. Without naming Mary, Paul asserts that God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law (Galatians 4:4). Paul s further statement that God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out Abba, Father! helps us realize that Mary is mother to all the brothers and sisters of Jesus. Some theologians also insist that Mary s motherhood of Jesus is an important element in God s creative plan. God s first thought in creating was Jesus. Jesus, the incarnate Word, is the one who could give God perfect love and worship on behalf of all creation. As Jesus was first in God s mind, Mary was second insofar as she was chosen from all eternity to be his mother. The precise title Mother of God goes back at least to the third or fourth century. In the Greek form Theotokos (God-bearer), it became the touchstone of the Church s teaching about the Incarnation. The Council of Ephesus in 431 insisted that the holy Fathers were right in calling the holy virgin Theotokos. At the end of this particular session, crowds of people marched through the street shouting: Praised be the Theotokos! The tradition reaches to our own day. In its chapter on Mary s role in the Church, Vatican II s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church calls Mary Mother of God 12 times. Other themes come together at today s celebration. It is the Octave of Christmas: Our remembrance of Mary s divine motherhood injects a further note of Christmas joy. It is a day of prayer for world peace: Mary is the mother of the Prince of Peace. It is the first day of a new year: Mary continues to bring new life to her children who are also God s children. Since that first Christmas day so many generations ago, the Church has carried the message of this story in the lives of the volunteers that we come to know as the saints. Some of these are named and celebrated with feasts and memorials, but most of the saints are more than satisfied with being the hands and feet, arms and legs of this mysterious and mystical body we call the Church. They are the volunteers of God s own heart, who seek to live the gospel and reveal the salvation of Emmanuel to the world. You are numbered among those saints. Your presence at the church makes you a part of the Church. The heart of God is within each of us and only seeks to expand the life of God to others. The Blessed Mother Mary was just a poor girl, but in her humility became the Mother of God. Joseph was just a poor carpenter, but in his faith he became the first teacher of the Messiah in the ways of faith. You may not believe there is a place for you among this great cloud of witnesses, but as the child in the manger smiled at the little drummer boy, he also smiles upon you. Now play your best for Him. 5 UROCZYSTOŚĆ ŚWIĘTEJ BOŻEJ RODZICIELKI 1 STYCZNIA Pierwszy dzień Nowego Roku to ósmy dzień od Narodzenia Jezusa. Według prawa żydowskiego każdy chłopiec miał być tego dnia obrzezany. W oktawę Bożego Narodzenia, dziękując Bogu za przyjście na świat Chrystusa, Kościół obchodzi uroczystość Maryi jako Matki Bożej, przez którą spełniły się obietnice dane całej ludzkości, związane z tajemnicą Odkupienia. Tego dnia z wszystkich przymiotów Maryi czcimy szczególnie Jej macierzyństwo. Dziękujemy Jej także za to, że swą macierzyńską opieką otacza cały Lud Boży. Poświęcenie Maryi pierwszego dnia rozpoczynającego się roku ma także inne znaczenie. Matka Jezusa zostaje ukazana ludziom jako najdoskonalsze stworzenie, a zarazem jako pierwsza z tych, którzy skorzystali z darów Chrystusa. Pragnienie zaakcentowania specjalnego wspomnienia Matki Bożej zrodziło się już w starożytności chrześcijańskiej. Kościół zachodni już w VII wieku wyznaczył w tym celu dzień 1 stycznia. Uroczystość Świętej Bożej Rodzicielki Maryi to najstarsze maryjne święto. Do liturgii Kościoła wprowadził je dość późno papież Pius XI w roku 1931 na pamiątkę rocznicy soboru w Efezie (431). Pius XI wyznaczył na coroczną pamiątkę tego święta dzień 11 października. Reforma liturgiczna w roku 1969 nie zniosła tego święta, ale podniosła je do rangi uroczystości nakazanych i przeniosła na 1 stycznia. Spośród szczególnych przywilejów Maryi na pierwszym miejscu trzeba wymienić Jej Boskie macierzyństwo, które w dzisiejszej uroczystości czcimy. Wszechmogący Boże, prosimy o błogosławieństwo Twoje na ten Nowy Rok. Nie wiemy, co on nam przyniesie, co nam w nim dasz. Jakie przeżyjemy w nim radości, jakie cierpienia? To wiesz tylko Ty, Ojcze miłosierny. Ty znasz początek, trwanie i kres naszego życia. Ty prowadzisz nas wszystkich przez czas do wieczności. Daj mi, Ojcze, trwać przy Tobie, iść wiernie drogą Twoich przykazań, abym poddany Tobie, w mocy Twojej spokojnie, pokornie i ufnie czynił to, co się Tobie podoba, co do mnie należy, i znosił to, co Ty ześlesz na mnie. Nie wiem, co mnie w tym roku czeka, ale to wiem na pewno, że tym, którzy Ciebie miłują, wszystko obraca się ku dobremu i to mi wystarcza. Ojcze, Ty kochasz Twoje dzieci. Niech rozpocznę ten rok w miłości Twojej. i pozostanę Ci wierny. Nie dozwól, aby cokolwiek odłączyło mnie od miłości Twojej. Kieruj mną według świętej woli Twojej W Tobie i w Twojej woli znajdę pokój, bo wola Twoja jest naszym pokojem, pokojem wiecznym u Ciebie.
