St. Augustine Page 2 BE A ROCK Peter s history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn t feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God s power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter s great profession of faith in Christ as Messiah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth. Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the failings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messiah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wisdom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. Let this be our vocation. Let us always strive to be solid ground on which the church of Jesus Christ can be founded and on which it can continue to be built. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 3 From the Pastor s Desk Dearly Beloved! Soon, very soon we will start cleaning and maintenance of the ventilation system (cooling and heating) in the Church. This is necessary because the entire ventilation system is simply very dirty, requires cleaning, and after it is cleaned it will better serve us. Finally, we will save money on our heating/cooling bills in the future. Today I would like to thank you for all special donations for our Sanctuary renovation. I thank you all for donations for the new altar and the Tabernacle, for the two new perpetual lamps at the Tabernacle; for the lector pulpits in the Sanctuary; thank you for the new microphones; thank you for the new and beautiful altar lights which are placed at the altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Family; thank you for funding a special cabinet for the Holy Oils and special vessels for the Holy Oil; thank you for funding a new cauldron for Holy Water, aspergillus, the new crystal and gilded cruets for water and wine, and for funding of special dish which is used to clean fingers after distributing the Holy Communion. What you do for our parish church is an expression of great love for Jesus and his Church. "May Our Good Lord Bless you and reward you"! As you can see the work in the Sanctuary is over. Thank you to the owners of the two companies for undertaking the renovation of St. Albert the Great Sanctuary and for the new decorative railings. Great job gentlemen! My Dear Friends! I will not write more today because I am in a hurry to join everyone at the Parish Carnival. I will be waiting there for you with good food, cold beer, good music and a big - from ear to ear smile! Jesus, I Trust in You! Fr. Mariusz TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eucharistic Prayer II is a popular choice for Mass since it is both simple in structure and short. It is written with a preface, which is the section after the dialogue The Lord be with you... Lift up your hearts... Let us give thanks, which introduces all the Eucharistic Prayers. The preface states the reason for the eucharistic assembly on that occasion, and there are dozens of them covering almost every imaginable gathering for prayer, some specific to feasts, others for Masses for the dead or for other needs. The preface attached to the second Eucharistic Prayer may be dropped in favor of a more appropriate choice, especially one of the prefaces for weekdays. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says that Eucharistic Prayer II is best suited for weekdays or special circumstances. In practice, however, it has become the common Sunday prayer because of its brevity and its comfortable familiarity. It also includes an optional phrase for adding the name of a deceased person remembered in the Mass, and therefore is often prayed at funerals. Article 50 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy specified that the rites are to be simplified and restored to the vigor they had in the tradition of the Fathers. Students were welcomed in the morning and in their classrooms. It was a fun-filled day to see the students walking around with their Emoji Stickers on their uniform shirts and learning about all the ways we can be kind to each other. The students with the most Emoji Stickers got an Emoji Beach Ball at the end of the day! What fun!! Proboszcza Wciąż trwa nasz parafialny karnawał w Bridgeview na skrzyżowaniu ulicy 79 Street i Harlem Ave. Bardzo was proszę, abyście skorzystali z naszego serdecznego zaproszenia do udziału w nim. Pamiętajcie, że także w ten sposób wspieracie nasza ukochaną parafię i to wszystko co wspólnie tutaj dokonujemy! A zatem do zobaczenia na karnawale! W najbliższym tygodniu rozpoczniemy czyszczenie i konserwację systemu wentylacyjnego (chłodzenie i ogrzewanie) w kościele. Jest to konieczne ponieważ: po pierwsze cały system wentylacyjny jest po prostu bardzo brudny i wymaga wyczyszczenia; po drugie po wyczyszczeniu system ten będzie lepiej nam służyć i po trzecie na przyszłość zaoszczędzimy w ten sposób pieniążki. Dziś pragnę wam także podziękować za specjalne donacje na nasze odnowione prezbiterium. To co robicie dla naszego parafialnego kościoła jest wyrazem wielkiej miłości do Jezusa i Jego Kościoła. Bóg Wam Wielki Zapłać!!! Jak już widzicie prace w prezbiterium dobiegły końca. Dziękuję właścicielom dwóch firm za podjęcie się renowacji naszego prezbiterium w kościele oraz za przygotowanie nowych dekoracyjnych poręczy w prezbiteruium. Panowie, powiem krótko: dobra robota!!! Więcej już dzisiaj nie piszę, bo spieszę się na nasz karnawał. Czekam tam na was z dobrym jedzenie, zimnym piwem, dobrą muzyką i uśmiechem od ucha do ucha! CUDOWNY OBRAZ MATKI BOŻEJ JASNOGÓRSKIEJ Największym skarbem Jasnej Góry jest Cudowny Wizerunek Matki Bożej. Dzięki niemu Jasna Góra stała się w XV w. jednym z największych sanktuariów maryjnych w Polsce. Przyczyna niezwykłości tego miejsca musi być głębsza skoro na Jasnej Górze nigdy nie odnotowano żadnych objawień maryjnych, jak to miało miejsce w innych sanktuariach. Siłą i tajemnicą, które do stóp Pani Jasnogórskiej przyciągają pielgrzymów, jest Jej Cudowny Obraz. Bez niego Jasna Góra byłaby tylko zbiorem budynków, pamiątek i dzieł sztuki, być może pięknym i bogatym, lecz martwym muzeum. Najstarszy opis wizerunku Matki Bożej podaje Jan Długosz w Liber Beneficiorum: Obraz Maryi Najchwalebniejszej i Najdostojniejszej Dziewicy i Pani, Królowej świata i Królowej naszej (...) wykonany dziwnym i rzadkim sposobem malowania (...) o przeładnym wyrazie twarzy, która spoglądających przenika szczególną pobożnością - jakbyś na żywą patrzył. Malowidło zalicza się do typu przedstawień określanego mianem Hodegetrii. Nazwa ta oznacza Tę, która prowadzi. Ukazuje Maryję jako Matkę Boga, ale też Matkę każdego człowieka. O początkach Obrazu i jego dziejach do 1382 r., nie posiadamy wiadomości - jedynie tradycję i różne pobożne podania. Według tradycji, Obraz Jasnogórskiej Pani miał malować św. Łukasz Ewangelista jeszcze za życia Najświętszej Panienki. Ta sama tradycja podaje nawet, że Obraz jest malowany na płycie stołu używanego przez świętą Rodzinę w Nazarecie. W IV wieku św. Helena, matka cesarza Konstantyna Wielkiego, miała przywieźć ze sobą ten Obraz do Konstantynopola. Tam doznawał on wielkiej czci i był pomocą w chwilach zwłaszcza wielkich nieszczęść jak zaraźliwe choroby, epidemie itp. Około wieku IX czy X Obraz powędrował na północ, gdzie ostatecznie na stałe spoczął w zamku Bełzkim, na północny wschód od Lwowa, na Rusi Czerwonej. W roku 1382 Władysław, książę Opola, w imieniu króla Ludwika Węgierskiego sprawował rządy na Rusi. Książę chcąc zabezpieczyć Obraz przed ewentualnym zbezczeszczeniem ze strony pogańskich Tatarów (raz podczas oblegania zamku Bełzkiego strzała tatarska wpadając przez okno kaplicy ugodzić miała w szyję Matki Bożej), postanowił przewieźć Obraz do Opola na Śląsk. Kiedy w drodze zatrzymał się na krótki odpoczynek w Częstochowie u podnóża, kościółka na Jasnej Górze, Matka Boża miała mu dać poznać Swą wolę, iż chce tutaj właśnie pozostać. Opolczyk pozostawił więc Obraz na Jasnej Górze, oddając go pod opiekę białym Ojcom Paulinom, sprowadzonym z Węgier w 1382 roku. Page 5 Jezu, ufam Tobie! Fr. Mariusz
