September 13, 2015 24th Ordinary Sunday Page Four World Mee ng of Families Catechesis Series The USCCB Secretariat of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth is excited about the World Mee ng of Families (WMOF) being held in Philadelphia in September 2015. They are presen ng a series of short ar cles focused on the WMOF Catechesis Love is our Mission: The Family Fully Alive and its implica ons for our daily lives. Two Become One Takes More than Romance Theresa Notare, PhD, Secretariat for Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth One of my married friends likes to say that marriage is an unrelen ng demand to put others first. That s because marriage is the union where a man and a woman the two become one (see Gn 2:24). Self-giving is at the heart of marriage. Chapter Four of the catechism for the 2015 World Mee ng of Families (WMOF) shines a light on this biblical teaching. Love, as many would agree, is central to marriage. Married love, however, is more than romance (no. 55). It s not that romance is bad; it s actually quite good, even exhilara ng. It s just that romance does not represent the full reality of love. Romance is only a ny fruit of love, more like the fros ng on a cake. Love, as God intends for marriage, is more. Married love calls husband and wife to move out of the ght confines of their individual egos and blend their lives, hopes, dreams, and desires. Marriage requires that spouses share the unique gi s of their masculinity and femininity. The Church recognizes marriage as a voca on. It is a specific call from God to love in a nup al manner, that is, in a way that builds the oneflesh union and is in service to life. Living married love well is not automa c. Husband and wife will need to rely on God s grace and consciously cul vate and live the Chris an virtues, especially mercy and chas ty (no. 62). It may be easy to see how mercy is part of marriage. A er all, forgiveness is essen al to all good rela onships, especially marriage! The benefit of chas ty, however, may not be so clear. The WMOF Catechism offers a helpful thought: Chas ty forms the good habits of self-denial and self-control, which are prerequisites for trea ng others with mercy (no. 62). We can understand this benefit of chas ty more deeply by looking to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The chaste person maintains the integrity of the powers of life and love placed in him [which] ensures the unity of the person, it is opposed to any behavior that would impair it. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2338) Chas ty is that virtue which protects the whole person. It fosters respect and ensures that people do not treat each other as objects. Chas ty helps people understand the meaning of human sexuality and the gi of procrea on. It enables husband and wife to love each other with respect, joy and reverence since it assists in sexual self-control. It enables spouses to speak the nup al language of the body (a language of total self-gi and openness to life). Chas ty fosters generosity. It helps spouses avoid any ac on that would assault their persons or the nature of marriage. So, for example, the chaste couple does not use contracep on or pornography. Contracep on falsifies the nup al language of the body and assaults the gi of fer lity, while pornography degrades their persons and mocks God s design for married love. In considering the nature of married love it is important to remember my friend s words marriage is an unrelen ng demand to put others first! The nature of married love insists that husband and wife give themselves to each other, selflessly, totally, and for the whole of life. Building a strong marriage is a life-long process and the human ego can be difficult to tame. That s why prac cing the Chris an virtues can be helpful to ensure that the two will become one!

September 13, 2015 24th Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen Do you know who I am? We o en hear the ques on in the context of celebri es who have been busted for some wrong-doing. Like Shia LaBeouf, who per an on-line report raised the ques on a while back a er being found to be disrup ve at a NYC theater performance. Or like Reese Witherspoon, who per the same report was arrested in Atlanta a few years ago in connec on with a DUI incident. In truth, I have always found these news stories amusing, but not because I enjoy the high and mighty being taken down a notch. This I find sad, actually. The humor presents itself when the high and mighty believe that their status puts them above the law. Jesus paraphrases the ques on in two different direc ons in today s Gospel. First he asks the disciples, Who do people say that I am? This is an easy one, and I suppose that in today s world, Christ could have just Googled himself to get insight. Imagine the hits: I nerant preacher. Man of God. Son of Man But his closest friends certainly have a more informed response. John the Bap- st, the disciples proffer. Others, Elijah, they con nue, and s ll others, one of the prophets. Perhaps an cipa ng these answers, Jesus doesn t even respond to them. Instead he follows up with a second ques on much tougher than the first: But who do you say that I am? Just like that, he makes it personal. Peter, of course--the ever impetuous, the ever reckless, the ever say-the-first-thing-that-comes-into-your-head--responds immediately, perhaps even before his friends can process the words. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish are the Christ, he says. And the rest pre y much is history. For Peter. For the disciples. For all of us. You are the Christ. Acknowledged. But now what? Once we make this determina on in our minds and in our hearts, we have only two choices: follow him, or walk away. And unfortunately, half-in is all the way out. Look at Peter. Even a er his confession, he can t bear to hear Jesus talking about the suffering ahead, so he takes Jesus aside to rebuke him. But Jesus rebukes him right back, saying Get behind me, Satan. So really, who s zoomin who? All of the readings give us an idea of what it means to follow Jesus, and it s no easy road. Consider Isaiah: I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard. Consider James: If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, but you do not give them the necessi es of the body, what good is that? Consider Jesus himself: Whoever wishes to come a er me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. Ah, there s that nagging ques on again: But who do you say that I am? If our answer matches Peter s--and if we walk the talk--we ll never have to ask the world, Do you know who I am? In the context of discipleship, our love should give us away.
