Saint Joseph Basilica September 16, 2018 3 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 16, 2018 Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Mark 8:34 During halftime, the high school basketball coach was trying to motivate his team as they struggled to stay in the game. You re not really trying, he said, you re just going through the motions. Your bodies are here, but your minds and hearts are a million miles away. Where s your commitment? Get in the game! Focus on what you are doing. Give it 100% or we are sure to lose. Jesus wants to know what the Apostles are thinking about Him. He asks and it is Peter who answers for them all. Ironically, it is Peter who tries to spare Jesus from the cross, and later, Peter will deny even knowing Jesus. His body was there, but his mind and heart were elsewhere. Peter s faith wavered because of his fear and uncertainty. But once He recovers and is strengthened by the Holy Spirit, Peter will be the first to proclaim the Gospel and the first to lead the Church, People struggle with faith. Our minds want to understand what we believe; we look for insight into what our hearts desire; we want to be more certain about our values, morals and choices. If you struggle, you are on the right path. Don t worry about spiritual trends in society or how loudly others may speak out against all that is holy. SAINT PADRE PIO Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, commonly known as Padre Pio is a popular modern day saint in the church. We celebrate his feast day on September 23rd. Padre Pio was admitted to the novitiate of the Capuchin Order of the Friars Minor at the young age of 15 and ordained to the priesthood at 23. One day in 1918, while Padre Pio was praying in front of the crucifix, the marks of the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, appeared on his hands and feet. The experience was painful and the wounds continuously bled, but they smelled of roses and never became infected. With resignation and serenity, he bore the painful wounds in his hands, feet, and side for fifty years. Padre Pio offered all of his bodily sufferings to God as a sacrifice, especially for the souls in Purgatory. We will be praying a triduum to Padre Pio after every Mass starting on Friday, September 21st and ending on Sunday, September 23rd, his feast day. Padre Pio, Pray for Us! BASILICA CHOIRS After the vacations break, the Basilica choirs are beginning regular rehearsals. We invite all parishioners to join in prayer by singing. American choir rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 6-7pm and Saturday at 3:30 pm. The Polish Choir has its rehearsals every Wednesday at 8pm. PARISH COUNCIL VOTING RESULTS The term of three Parish Council members expires this month. Parishioners were presented a ballot consisting of five candidates with instructions to vote for no more than three people who would best represent the parish. The top three parishioners elected to parish council for a term of three years expiring in September 2021 are: Timothy West, Jill Manak, Kathleen Sirard Returning to fulfill their final term on council are: Andrew Jolda, George Baldowski, David Podbielski, Edward Kudron. SISTER MARY VALENTA SCHOLARSHIP We are most grateful to many parishioners, school families, Holy Rosary Sodality, the Bingo committee, and above all, the kindergarten class of 2018 who offered generous donations in memory of Sister Mary Valenta. According to Sr. Jeanne s wish, these donations will be used to establish the Scholarship Fund for eighth grade students who will be enrolling in the Catholic high schools. To date, we collected $3,685 in the Sr. Valenta s Scholarship Fund. It is our wish and hope that this will become an annual scholarship in Sister Valenta s memory. Therefore, if you would like to make a donation in support of this scholarship, you may send it at any time. The check should be made out to St. Joseph School Scholarship Fund with Sr. Valenta s Scholarship on a memo line. This new scholarship will replace the Msgr. Anthony Czarnecki s scholarship which had been awarded to students enrolling in the Catholic high schools. We are grateful to Msgr. Tony who for over 10 years financed this scholarship with his annual donation of $1,000 or more. This annual donation, which was divided evenly among the students, was very much appreciated by the families in their pursuit of strengthening their children s faith by enrolling them in Catholic high schools. We prayerfully ask that you consider donating to this worthy cause in memory of Sr. Valenta so that more graduates of St. Joseph School could continue education in a Catholic high school. SEPTEMBER 11 MEMO- RIAL St. J os ep h School students gathered on September 11th to honor the memory of those who were lost, as well as rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that swept our nation after 9/11. Saint Joseph Basilica September 16, 2018 5 BACK TO SCHOOL The 2018-2019 school year got off to a great start! There are a lot of new faces at St. Joseph School, as well as many who ve attended for years. Nevertheless, whether they re Eighth- Grade or PreK students, faculty or staff, everyone arrived on the first day of school with smiles on their faces, eager to get back to work. Culminating the first week of school, Mrs. Weaver s Eighth-Grade students led their peers in the Liturgy of the Word and the Prayer of the Faithful during First Friday Mass. In addition, the choir reunited after their summer hiatus and sounded beautiful performing many of their favorite songs. The St. Joseph School community continued to celebrate their return to school at Family Mass on Sunday, September 9th, followed by the Annual Back-to-School picnic. During Family Mass, the school administration and faculty took their Oath of Fidelity. By taking the Oath, the teachers vowed to adhere with religious submission of will and intellect to the teaching of the Church and pass on to the students the doctrine of the Catholic Church. In addition, those in attendance celebrated the birthday of the Blessed Mother with candles, roses, birthday cake, and song. Following Mass, families enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, games, and more at the 200 Sportsmen Club, courtesy of the Home and School Association. Mieć takie samo nastawienie jak Jezus, kiedy mówił: Niech się dzieje Twoja wola, nie Moja. Jeśli nie chcemy być przeciwnikami Boga (szatanami), nie mówmy Mu więcej co jest dla nas lepsze. ŚWIĘTY OJCIEC PIO Św. Pius z Pietrelciny, powszechnie znany jako Ojciec Pio, jest znanym, dwudziestowiecznym świętym w Kościele. Jego liturgiczne wspomnienie przypada na 23 września. Ojciec Pio został przyjęty na nowicjat Franciszkanów w wieku 15 lat i wyświęcony na kapłana w wieku 23 lat. W roku 1918, podczas modlitwy, na jego rękach, stopach i boku pojawiły się stygmaty - bolesne znaki ran Chrystusa. Pomimo upływu czasu, rany nie zabliźniały się, lecz ciągle krwawiły, wydzielając przy tym zapach róż. Ojciec Pio przez 50 lat nosił bolesne znamiona, ofiarując swoje cierpienia Bogu jako ofiarę, szczególnie w intencji dusz czyśćcowych. W związku ze zbliżającym się liturgicznym wspomnieniem św. Piusa z Pietrelciny, po każdej Mszy świętej w okresie 21-23 września będzie odmawiana specjalna modlitwa o wstawiennictwo świętego mistyka z Pietrelciny. Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona na nauczani katechezy w naszej parafii (CCD).

STYPENDIUM SIOSTRY VALENTY Jesteśmy wdzięczni wielu parafianom, rodzinom szkolnym, Kółkom Różańcowym, komitetowi Bingo, a przede wszystkim klasie przedszkolnej w 2018 roku, która ofiarowała hojne datki ku pamięci Siostry Mary Valenty. Zgodnie z życzeniem s. Jeanne, te darowizny zostaną wykorzystane do utworzenia Funduszu Stypendialnego dla uczniów klas ósmych, którzy będą zapisywać się do katolickich szkół średnich. Do tej pory zebraliśmy 3685 dolarów w funduszu stypendialnym imienia Siostry Valenty. Jest to nasze życzenie i nadzieja, że stanie się to corocznym stypendium ku pamięci Siostry Valenty. Dlatego jeśli chcesz przekazać darowiznę na wsparcie tego stypendium, możesz wysłać ją w dowolnym momencie. Czek należy wystawić na: St. Joseph School Scholarship Fund z dopiskiem: Stypendium s. Valenta na linii memo. To nowe stypendium zastąpi Stypendium Msgr. Anthony'ego Czarneckiego, które było przyznawane uczniom zapisującym się do katolickich szkół średnich. Niech Bóg wynagrodzi wasze hojne serce wieloma błogosławieństwami. POWRÓT DO SZKOŁY Rok szkolny 2018-2019 rozpoczął się znakomicie! W naszej szkole pojawiło się wiele nowych twarzy, ale zdecydowaną większość stanowią uczniowie, którzy pojawiają się w naszej szkole od lat. Niemniej jednak, niezależnie od tego, czy są to uczniowie ósmej klasy, czy przedszkolaki, nauczyciele czy inni pracownicy, wszyscy przybyli pierwszego dnia do szkoły z uśmiechem na twarzy. Kulminacją pierwszego tygodnia była uroczysta Msza Pierwszopiątkowa, w czasie której liturgię animowali uczniowie ósmej klasy pod opieką pani Weaver. Ponadto po letniej przerwie pięknie zabrzmiał szkolny chór wykonując wiele swoich ulubionych piosenek. Kolejnym elementem celebracji była Rodzinna Msza, w niedzielę, 9 września, a po niej doroczny piknik "Powrót do szkoły". Podczas Mszy Rodzinnej nauczyciele i pracownicy administracji szkoły złożyli Przyrzeczenie Wierności nauczaniu Kościoła Katolickiego. Ponadto osoby uczestniczące w obchodach uczciły urodziny Matki Boskiej ze świecami, różami i tortem urodzinowym.
