The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are you investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are you investing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the things of this world. Thank you! The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention. ~ Oscar Wilde Sincere THANK YOU to all who give their time to keep our church clean. Thank you for your faithfulness and dependability. Please know that your help is very much valued and appreciated. May God bless you abundantly. A Prayer for the Armed Forces Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. August 11, 2013 19th Ordinary Sunday Page Four Families are the also primary source of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. Some helpful things for parents to ponder: The Importance of Maintaining Catholic Family Traditions Religious family traditions have a long and venerable history. As far back as early Biblical times there is evidence concerning family life in ancient Israel which reflects God's desire that we should strengthen our families with religious customs. When the Israelites left Egypt and settled in the Promised Land, God commanded their families to hold special observances in their homes so that they would remember what He had done for them. Examples are the annual Passover celebration (Exodus 12: 1 20) and the weekly Sabbath observance (Exodus 20: 8 11). Catholic spirituality in the home provides a common foundation for family members to discover the meaning and purpose of life. God made us, as the Catechism tells us, "to know Him, love Him and serve Him in this world and to be happy with Him for ever in the next." Families are the means which God has provided for children to come into the world, be baptised and be nurtured in the true Faith, and helped to grow in faith, hope and charity. It is in the family that the practice of faith is impressed upon young people and where attitudes toward life are formed. Parents, then, should recognize the need to teach their children to make choices grounded in Gospel values. * Practice of your own faith provides a much needed alternative to negative influences of modern culture. * Let the way you live your married life model the value of Christian commitment. * Never forget that your children are a gift from God. * Pray with your children and take them with you regularly to Church. * The practice and celebration of religious customs and practices is a powerful way to experience the truths of our Catholic Faith. Grounded in our long faith tradition (the Catholic Church is by far the world's oldest institution), they help us celebrate our beliefs and preserve our Catholic identity. * When teaching young children about religious symbols and traditional prayers, teachers and parents are giving children a connection between the child s religious expression and that of the adult s. * What may be simply a childish awareness at age 3 becomes a full understanding as an adult. What they learn as young children is built up at a subconscious level, and can be drawn from as they get older. * In a similar vein, rituals and prayers learned as children can be comforting in times of grief or stress as adults. * By teaching children our customs and traditions, new generations will continue to experience and embrace their Catholic Faith.

Page Five 19th Ordinary Sunday August 11, 2013 THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2013 SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Holy Day of Obligation On Thursday, Catholics and many other Christians will celebrate the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God. Venerable Pope Pius XII confirmed this belief about the Virgin Mary as the perennial teaching of the Church when he defined it formally as a dogma of Catholic faith in 1950. The constitution also cited testimonies from the early Church fathers on the subject, and described the history of theological reflection on many Biblical passages which are seen as indicating that Mary was assumed into heaven following her death. Although the bodily assumption of Mary is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, Catholic tradition identifies her with the woman clothed with the sun who is described in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revelation. Eastern Christians have also traditionally held Mary's assumption into heaven as an essential component of their faith. Pius XII cited several early Byzantine liturgical texts, as well as the eighth century Arab Christian theologian St. John of Damascus, in his own authoritative definition of her assumption. In Eastern Christian tradition, the same feast is celebrated on the same calendar date, although typically known as the Dormition (falling asleep) of Mary. Eastern Catholic celebration of the Dormition is preceded by a two week period of fasting which is similar to Lent. The feast of the Assumption is always a Holy Day of Obligation for both Roman and Eastern rite Catholics, on which they are obliged to attend Mass or Divine Liturgy. Page Nine 19th Ordinary Sunday August 11, Actor Martin Sheen to narrate Messenger of the Truth We are thrilled to announce Golden Globe winner and Catholic pro life activist Martin Sheen has joined the Messenger of the Truth project. Sheen recently completed the voiceover narration on Messenger of the Truth, which documents the story of human rights activist and Polish martyr, Father Jerzy Popieluszko. Sheen is best known for his role in Apocalypse Now, which was one of the first films Messenger of the Truth writer and producer, Paul Hensler, worked on in Hollywood. Sheen's other successes include the TV series, The West Wing, Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain and a project very close to his heart called, The Way. "With The Way, writer/director Emilio Estevez has created an exquisitely beautiful and emotionally honest film that will resonate deeply with anyone who has gone searching, been hurt, grieved, fallen in love, felt inadequate, experienced writer's block, questioned God, given up on God or who has simply learned to discover the beauty of everyday life against remarkable odds." The Independent Critic (http://theindependentcritic.com/way) Messenger of the Truth is a remarkable true story of a Solidarity era martyr, Blessed Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko. This film is a must see documentary for all who believe in the rights of Religious Liberty, the dignity of the human person, and those who are lovers of freedom and defenders of the truth." Timothy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York

W polskiej tradycji ludowej uroczystość w Święto Matki Bożej Zielnej liczne sanktuaria maryjne, kościoły i kaplice, wypełniają się przybyłymi wiernymi i pielgrzymami, którzy przynoszą do poświęcenia wianki zielne, bukiety kwiatów, PORZĄDEK MSZY ŚW: PO POLSKU: 9:30AM 7:30PM PO ANGIELSKU: 6:30AM 8:00AM 6:00PM kłosy zbóż i owoce, w szczególności w regionach wiejskich. Zapraszamy we piatek, 16 sierpnia. Drodzy Przyjaciele Biblioteki Muzeum Polskiego w Ameryce! August 11, 2013 19th Ordinary Sunday Page ON GIRDED LOINS Copyright 2013 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) Gird. It s a pretty cool word, but it s not one in common usage. Today s Gospel uses the term twice, though, and it reminds me that typically when I see it or hear of it, the word is associated with Scripture. I Googled Gird in the Bible just now and according to the second listing that popped up, there are ninety three references to the word in the Good Book. The King James version, anyway. From Genesis to Revelation, it s in there over and over and over again, and as a priest once told me, whenever we see something over and over and over again in Scripture, we d better take notice. Definition wise, gird is all over the place. Specifically, it s on page 959 of my Webster s Unabridged Dictionary, and other than give, it has the most ink. I didn t know about the mocking/gibing element of the word [ To sneer at (verb) is one definition, and a sarcastic remark (noun) is another]. Nor did I know that it is an alternate form of girth, A hoop for a barrel or tub, or a hoop used as a child s plaything. I m familiar with the other definitions, though, like, to encircle or bind with any flexible band (as a belt), and to make fast or secure. And the definition perhaps closest to the hearts and minds of most of us is the specific notion of girding one s loins, which, again per Webster, means to prepare for a test of strength or other trial. This, of course is the first usage in today s Gospel, which has Jesus telling his disciples to be ever vigilant about the Kingdom. Gird your loins and light your lamps, he directs his disciples, and be like servants who await their master s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. The actual girding reference here, as I understand it, has to do with hiking up one s garments to be ready for action, or, as one on line observer notes: In biblical times when people wore long robes, when it became necessary for someone to perform some action which required freedom of movement, they would tie or belt the robe so that it would not encumber their legs. Makes sense to me. This is more evident in the Gospel s second (gird) usage as Christ goes on: Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, and have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. We all get the concept. But one of those ninety three gird references directs us to 1 Peter, and here the author applies a broader brush to the concept: Gird the loins of your understanding, live soberly, set all your hope on the gift to be conferred on you when Jesus Christ appears. I don t know about you, but rolling up my sleeves certainly today s counterpart to girding my loins is a lot easier than doing any actual work. And yet as disciples, we are called to the work of the Kingdom (and as Jesus again explains, since much has been entrusted to us, much will be demanded of us). I m not saying we won t fail again and again. I m just saying we need to be serious about the work at hand. This is no time for un girded loins.
