Saint Joseph Basilica 3 Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time January 28, 2018 Brothers and Sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. 1 Corinthians 7:32 St. Mark makes it clear that, from the very first day of Christ's public ministry, his messianic power began to be manifested to those who saw and heard him. The Jews of Capernaum were astonished at his teaching and amazed at his power over the evil spirits. What is this, they asked one another, a new teaching and the unclean spirits obey him! But they were still a long way from recognizing him for what he was, the Messiah and Son of God. This is as might be expected, the astounding mystery of the incarnation was way beyond human expectation or human imagination. And it was our Lord's own plan to reveal this mystery, slowly and gradually, so that when the chain of evidence had been completed by his resurrection, his followers could look back and see each link in that chain. Then they would be ready to accept without hesitation the mystery of the incarnation and realize the infinite love and power of God that brought it about. We look back today through the eyes of the Evangelists, and, like them, know that Christ was God as well as man two natures in one person. We should not therefore be amazed at the teaching of Jesus or at his power over the unclean spirits. What should amaze us really is the love that God showed mankind in becoming one of our race. JOSEPH On Wednesday, January 31, at 7pm we encourage parishioners to join us for the Novena to St. Joseph, our patron. He is considered to be a patron of merchants, fathers, families, and individuals who are in dire need of material needs. This is all true, but, St. Joseph is considered by theologians as a Saint of deeds. He accepted new life into his home, of whom he wasn t the father, and cared for it and defended it from the evil of Herod. It is well known and documented in various Shrines of the world, dedicated to St. Joseph, that the miracles are not extraordinary happenings but are almost daily occurrences. It is enough to read the book of miracles located in every Shrine to be convinced of his extraordinary powers. Please submit your prayer requests by using the petition slips provided in the chapel. The entrance procession to our Basilica will be represented by various groups with their national dress and flags. Every year we present a Partners in Education Award and this year we will honor and recognize two teachers who have served our St. Joseph School students for many years: Mrs. Donna Recko, 3rd grade, and Mrs. Mary Ann Weaver, who teaches English and Social Studies for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Mrs. Recko is a graduate of our St. Joseph School and has taught here for 36 years. Mrs. Mary Ann Weaver has been with St. Joseph School for 38 years. Their dedication, expertise, and faith uniquely qualifies them for this prestigious award and we are very proud of their commendable work ethic. Saint Joseph Basilica 5 VALUE OF A CATHOLIC EDUCATION St. Joseph School is one of 6,429 Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the United States. Of these schools, 1,739 Catholic Schools have a waiting list for admission. It is worthy to note that 97.4% of Catholic schools are operated by laity (75.3% lay women, 22.1% men) with religious constituting only 2.6%. There are 1,878,824 students enrolled in Catholic schools. It is also interesting to observe that the Catholic schools non-catholic population is rapidly growing. For this academic year, 345,327 non-catholic students are enrolled in the Catholic schools which constitutes 18.4% of total enrollment. This is a clear indication that Catholic schools provide a holistic education addressing the whole student s material, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. Catholic education has a unique quality to translate knowledge into the wisdom of life. St. Joseph School fosters a spirit of caring and cooperation between parents, administration, and faculty based on the conviction that we are all sons and daughters of God. REFLECTIONS ON SUNDAY S CHOIR PRESENTATIONS Last Sunday s enjoyable performances in our Basilica were truly amazing and a great success. Choirs, singers, and musical ensembles from Our Lady of Czestochowa parishes of Boston and Worcester, St. Andrew Bobola parish of Dudley, and our own choir regaled listeners to beautiful Polish and English Christmas carols. Our organist, Karol Jaje, ensured that the program ran smoothly and those in attendance were greatly impressed by this wonderful concert. It was good to see such an enthusiastic gathering of parish members and friends. CZWARTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA 28 stycznia, 2018 Chciałbym, żebyście byli wolni od utrapień. (1Kor 7 32) Szatan na różne sposoby próbuje wmówić człowiekowi, że Bóg jest jego wrogiem. Od tego zaczęła się historia grzechu. Już pierwsi rodzice w raju postanowili przechytrzyć swojego Stwórcę i być jak On. Zły nie zrezygnował z oskarżycielskiego tonu wobec Boga. Ileż to razy kusi nas, byśmy spróbowali na czymś przyłapać Boga, obrazili się na Niego, bo nie dostaliśmy tego, o co prosiliśmy, albo przestali Go słuchać, bo wydaje się nam, że wymagania stawiane w Ewangelii są nierealistyczne. Jeśli rozpoznajesz w sobie ten szyderczy i zwodniczy szept Złego, pomódl się, by dziś w twoim domu rozległo się stanowcze Jezusowe: Milcz i wyjdź z niego!. TYDZIEŃ SZKÓŁ KATOLICKICH Na Mszy św. o godz. 9:30, pod przewodnictwem Ks. Biskupa Roberta McManus, rozpoczęliśmy tegoroczne obchody Tygodnia Szkół Katolickich. Również dziś obchodzimy Narodowy Dzień Migracji. W naszej społeczności szkolnej są uczniowie z szesnastu różnorodnych narodowości. W procesji na wejście uczniowie ubrani w narodowe stroje, wniosą flagi swoich krajów. W czasie tych uroczystości przyznawana jest również nagroda Partners In Education. W tym roku nagrodę otrzymują pani Dona Recko, nauczycielka 3 klasy oraz pani Mary Ann Weaver, nauczycielka 8 klasy. Serdecznie im gratulujemy i dziękujemy za wieloletnie poświęcenie dla naszych uczniów. Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona na Catholic Home Mission Appeal. Druga kolekta w przyszłym tygodniu bedzie przeznaczona na pokrycie wyższych kosztów utrzymania i energii.

PIEROGI I GOŁĄBKI Dziś ubiega termin składania zamówień na pierogi, gołąbki i naleśniki. Formularze zamówień znajdują się przy wejściach do Bazyliki. Ceny są następujące: $9 za tuzin pierogów, $7 za 4 gołąbki, $6 za 4 naleśniki. Wypełnione formularze prosimy wrzucać do koszyków z kolektą. PRO LIFE COMMITTEE Od ponad 45 lat wspólnoty katolickie organizują marsze Pro Life, które odbywają wie w Waszyngtonie. Jest to nie tylko jednorazowy przemarsz, ale cały ruch obejmujący swym zasięgiem cały kraj. Jego celem jest obrona życia w każdej formie. Nasza parafia pragnie być częścią tego ruchu na naszym regionalnym poziomie. Osoby pragnące włączyć się w obronę życia mogą uzyskać więcej informacji w biurze parafialnym. KONCERT KOLĘD W ubiegłą niedzielę odbył się koncert chórów parafialnych. Oprócz naszego chóru udział wzięły chóry z polskich parafii w Bostonie, Worcester i Dudley. Jak zwykle występom towarzyszyła podniosła i uroczysta atmosfera. Każdy z chórów zaprezentował przygotowane przez siebie kolędy w oryginalnych opracowaniach, a oprawę zapewniły komentarze zaprezentowane przez panią Małgorzatę Kicilińską, z których w ciekawy sposób słuchacze mogli dowiedzieć się o historii i znaczeniu kolęd. Głownych koordynatorem koncertu był nasz organista, pan Karol Jaje. Po koncercie wszyscy zgromadzili się na poczęstunku w szkole. Była to doskonała okazja do odnowienia i pogłębienia znajomości i przyjaźni. Posiłek przygotowały panie z naszego chóru pod kierownictwem pani Lidii Nolle, która na co dzień pracuje w naszej szkole i stołówce. Przed rozstaniem wszyscy zgodnie umówili się na przyszłoroczne kolędowanie, które odbędzie się najprawdopodobniej w parafii Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej w Worcester.
