Philippians 2:10-11 Christ Himself speaks of His Own kingly authority [see link for Bible Cita ons]: in His last discourse, speaking of the rewards and punishments that will be the eternal lot of the just and the damned; in His reply to the Roman magistrate, who asked Him publicly whether He were a king or not; a er His resurrec on, when giving to His Apostles the mission of teaching and Bap zing all na ons, He took the opportunity to call Himself king, confirming the tle publicly, and solemnly proclaimed that all power was given Him in Heaven and on earth. These words can only be taken to indicate the greatness of his power, the infinite extent of His kingdom. What wonder, then, that He Whom St. John calls the "prince of the kings of the earth" appears in the Apostle's vision of the future as He Who "hath on His garment and on His thigh wri en 'King of kings and Lord of lords!'." It is Christ Whom the Father "hath appointed heir of all things"; "for He must reign un l at the end of the world He hath put all his enemies under the feet of God and the Father." It was surely right, then, in view of the common teaching of the sacred books, that the Catholic Church, which is the kingdom of Christ on earth, des ned to be spread among all men and all na ons, should with every token of venera on salute her Author and Founder in her annual liturgy as King and Lord, and as King of Kings. And, in fact, she used these tles, giving expression with wonderful variety of language to one and the same concept, both in ancient psalmody and in the Sacramentaries. For the Lord is good Psalm 100:4 May God bless you and all your loved ones, and may he watch over those who have no one and nothing this Thanksgiving Day. Father Jason Torba and the entire staff of St. Ferdinand parish and schools In everything give thanks; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18) It s Thanksgiving. Time to go around the dinner table and say what you are thankful for. When it s your turn, you will likely be thankful for your family and the good meal. Then, you ll think of other blessings that have come your way. But will you be thankful for the difficul es and hardships? Will you thank God for the nasty neighbor and the guy with road rage that crossed your path the other day? If not, you are neglec ng some of your blessings. The Everyday Things It s easy to thank God at the end of our day for the things we enjoyed, but if we adjust our perspec ve, we will find blessings we never iden fied as such. For instance, when I was pregnant with our eight children, ge ng up in the middle of the night and feeling uncomfortable or sick or needing to use the bathroom was standard nigh me procedure. One night, I was about to grumble to myself when a powerful inspira on overcame me. Instead of complaining, I could be offering up this suffering for others who were not so blessed as me. I thought of the pregnant women on the streets of India or in Guatemala; women without indoor plumbing and a clean so bed. Here I was complaining instead of giving thanks for my comfortable circumstances. Imagine from God s vantage point, all the mes we complain to Him, or even just to ourselves. I have pointed out to my kids that God sees all everyone in the world all at once. So while we are complaining about some trivial thing, God sees the suffering of his poor and forgo en. Instead of complaining, we should be thanking God and offering up our inconveniences for those who are less fortunate and for the conversion of sinners. To suffer is not just an opportunity to strengthen our own souls, but something that can be united to the sufferings of Christ and given in love, like a prayer, for the salva on of poor, misguided sinners. Lest we neglect some of these opportuni es, I will point out an area we all experience in our lives that we can turn into a treasure. In another ar cle, I pointed out that the people that seem to darken our doorways the difficult people in our lives are actually blessings. Why else did the saints seem to be a racted to nasty, unlovable people? One reason was because they had the ability to love like Christ, but they also saw the opportunity. Consider these Scripture passages: For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you (Luke 6:38). And in the Bea tudes in Ma hew 5:3-10 we are told, Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. In the context of these promises, it makes sense that the saints gravitated towards those that the rest of us find difficult. Rather than seeing someone to avoid and complain about, they saw these people as blessings. For if we are kind and merciful to those that don t deserve it, then God will keep His promise and show us mercy we don t deserve. In effect, when we are kind and forgiving and pray for those that hurt us, we are also helping ourselves. So this year, when it s your turn to share what you are thankful for, imagine how your list will surprise the others at the table. It will be an opportunity to share your new perspec ve with others and for everyone at the table to open their eyes to blessings they might have overlooked before. Page Nine Christ the King Sunday November 23, 2014 UROCZYSTOSC CHRYSTUSA KROLA Kościół katolicki obchodzi dzisiaj uroczystość Chrystusa Króla Wszechświata, panującego w niebie i na ziemi. Ostatnia niedziela przed Adwentem - początkiem nowego roku liturgicznego - stanowi podkreślenie faktu panowania zmartwychwstałego Chrystusa. Uroczystość Chrystusa Króla w swojej wymowie wskazuje na cel ostateczny życia człowieka, czyli na zjednoczenie z Bogiem i oddanie się pod panowanie Jego miłości w Królestwie Bożym. Królowanie Chrystusa wyraża się w zbawieniu człowieka. Przez swoją śmierć na krzyżu dał On dowód miłości względem wszystkich ludzi i odpuszczając nasze grzechy, pojednał nas z Ojcem oraz uczynił ludem wybranym, czyli królestwem i kapłanami Boga samego. W ikonografii Chrystus Król już od starożytności przedstawiony jest jako Pantokrator, czyli Wszechwładca, zasiadający na tronie, mający ziemię za podnóżek lub trzymający glob ziemski w dłoni. Tak przedstawiają Jezusa dawne ikony i mozaiki. Tak też wielokrotnie ukazuje Go Apokalipsa - jako zasiadającego na tronie, któremu całe stworzenie oddaje cześć. Równocześnie Ewangelie ukazują inny wymiar królowania Chrystusa. Ubiczowany, ukoronowany cierniami Jezus odpowiada na pytanie Poncjusza Piłata: Tak, jestem Królem. Królestwo moje nie jest z tego świata (por. J 18, 33-40). Na krzyżu Chrystusa widniał napis: Jezus Nazarejczyk Król Żydowski (J, 19,19), a ukrzyżowany z Nim łotr prosił tuż przed śmiercią: Jezu, wspomnij na mnie, gdy będziesz w swoim królestwie (Łk 23,42). Ten ewangeliczny przekaz ukazuje, że w najgłębszym chrześcijańskim sensie panować to znaczy służyć, a nawet oddać życie za innych. Uroczystość Chrystusa Króla wprowadził do kalendarza liturgicznego papież Pius XI encykliką "Quas Primas" z 11 grudnia 1925 r. na zakończenie roku jubileuszowego. Papieska encyklika ustanawiająca tę uroczystość jako przeciwstawienie się silnym tendencjom ateistycznym i laickim, które w tym czasie były bardzo popularne, wskazywała na Chrystusa jako Króla mającego władzę nad człowiekiem i całym światem. Papież nakazał wtedy, aby we wszystkich kościołach tego dnia po głównym nabożeństwie przed wystawionym Najświętszym Sakramentem odmówić Litanię do Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa oraz akt poświęcenia rodzaju ludzkiego Najświętszemu Sercu. Początkowo uroczystość obchodzono w ostatnią niedzielę października. Po reformie liturgicznej w 1969 r. uroczystość została przeniesiona na ostatnią niedzielę roku kościelnego. Umieszczenie tej uroczystości na końcu kalendarza wiąże się z biblijnym rozumieniem czasu i odzwierciedla zarazem sens roku liturgicznego, który jakby odtwarza najważniejsze zdarzenia w dziejach zbawienia. THANKSGIVING czyli ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA Święto Dziękczynienia (Thanksgiving Day) jest formą wdzięczności społeczeństwa za coroczne płody oraz wszystkie dobre rzeczy obecne w sercach ludzi. Thanksgiving w Stanach Zjednoczonych obchodzone jest co roku w ostatni czwartek listopada Jest to pamiątka pierwszego Dziękczynienia założycieli angielskiej kolonii w Plymouth, którzy przybyli do Nowej Anglii na statku Mayflower 21 listopada 1620 r. jako grupa 102 purytanów z Anglii (tzw. Pilgrim Fathers, ojcowie pielgrzymi). Ponieśli oni tej pierwszej zimy wielkie straty i wielu z nich zmarło z głodu. Żniwa 1621 roku były już obfite. Pozostali przy życiu koloniści zdecydowali uczcić to świętem, wraz z 91 Indianami z plemienia Wampanoagów, którzy pomogli Pielgrzymom przetrwać trudny okres. Podczas święta Amerykanie tradycyjnie spożywają uroczystą kolację w gronie rodziny i przyjaciół, dziękując Bogu za wszystko, co dobrego ich spotkało. Na stole króluje pieczony indyk podawany z przystawką z żurawin i słodkimi ziemniakami. Są też ciasta z dyni lub z jabłkami. Szacuje się, że tego dnia Amerykanie jedzą przeciętnie 46 milionów indyków. Święto Dziękczynienia jest okazją dla akcji charytatywnych organizowanych przez władze lokalne i Kościół. Wolontariusze w całych Stanach rozdają biednym i bezdomnym darmowe posiłki.w USA przyjęło się, iż przed Świętem Dziękczynienia urzędująca głowa państwa ułaskawia świątecznego indyka. November 23, 2014 Christ the King Sunday Page Thirteen Like you perhaps, I receive a lot of dona on requests in the mail. The Red Cross. The March of Dimes. The VFW. The MDA. Illinois Special Olympics. Catholic Relief Services. Chicago Tribune Chari es. American Cancer Society. Lurie s Children Hospital. Opera on Smile. I have given to many of these over the years. Not to all. And the requests just keep coming. I really think I could fill up an en re column just lis ng the names of deserving charitable organiza ons hoping to raise money for their individual causes. I won t. But I will focus briefly on one in par cular, even though their dona on request (most of it, anyway ) ended up in the trash. Children s Hunger Relief Fund. I am in no way placing this agency above--or below--any of the others I ve men oned here, but their dona on request hit my mailbox the other day along with a slew of the above. I wrote a few checks for various agencies in response and said a brief prayer as I put them in the outgoing mail that the money would be put to the good. Like I said, I threw the CHRF dona on request away, but not before I removed the three cents they had included in their mailing. Other agencies have sent me coins in their mailings, too, to let me know how li le it takes to help, and whether I donate or not, I typically throw these coins into a lose coin bank I keep in my closet. These three coins, though, I put on the corner of my dresser Why? And not only to be more cognizant to the needs of God s own, but to actually do something about it. I m not sure exactly what. Maybe spend a few more dollars in support of the many good causes out in the world. Maybe add a few more cans to my parish s weekly food drive for the St. Stanislaus soup kitchen. Maybe sign up for our upcoming service project. Maybe write a le er to a guy I know who s going through a hard me. Maybe just pray more regularly for the poor and marginalized. Something. Today, the final Sunday of the Church year, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. It s an impressive tle, which, at first blush, today s first reading doesn t seem to do jus ce to. For thus says the Lord in Ezekiel: I myself will look a er and tend my sheep. Not very kingly. But if the truest nature of kingsmanship is service to the people, the shepherd image fits. Jesus stresses service to his people directly in the Gospel, the Judgment scene in Ma hew. Here, our Lord speaks of being hungry and thirsty, of being a stranger and naked, of being ill and in prison. And he explains to both the righteous and the corrupt that what we do--or don t do--for the marginalized and the poor, we do--or don t do--for him. This is not just me talking, OK? This is the King himself talking. And for my two three cents worth, it s something to always, always, always keep in mind.
