MAKE A DIFFERENCE!! The Dominican Literacy Center (1503 Rice St., Melrose Park) is in great need of women volunteers for the 2015-16 session. This program offers tutoring in reading, writing, and speaking of English to immigrant women, on a one-to-one basis (one student with one tutor). Classes are once a week, for an hour and ½ session (from September to June). Four consecutive and informative training sessions will be held on the evenings of Aug. 18 (Tuesday), Aug. 20 (Thursday), Aug. 24 (Monday), and Aug. 26 (Wednesday). St. William FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTIONS The next First Friday Mass will be August 7 at 8:15am with Confession heard from 7:30 8:00am. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament following Mass. We will pray the Litany of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus for vocations. THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST The feast of the Transfiguration of Christ celebrates the revelation of Christ's divine glory on Mount Tabor in Galilee (Matthew 17:1-6; Mark 9:1-8; Luke 9:28-36). After revealing to His disciples that He would be put to death in Jerusalem (Matthew 16:21), Christ, along with Ss. Peter, James, and John, went up the mountain. There, Saint Matthew writes, "he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow." We will celebrate the Transfiguration at the 8:15am & oon Masses on Thursday, August 6. HISTORY The brightness was not something added to Christ but the manifestation of His true divine nature. For Peter, James, and John, it was also a glimpse of the glories of heaven and of the resurrected body promised to all Christians. As Christ was transfigured, two others appeared with Him: Moses, representing the Old Testament Law, and Elijah, representing the prophets. Thus Christ, Who stood between the two and spoke with them, appeared to the disciples as the fulfillment of both the Law and the prophets. At Christ's baptism in the Jordan, the voice of God the Father was heard to proclaim that "This is my beloved Son" (Matthew 3:17). During the Transfiguration, God the Father pronounced the same words (Matthew 17:5). Despite the importance of this event, the Feast of the Transfiguration was not among the earliest of the Christian feasts. It was celebrated in Asia starting in the fourth or fifth century and spread throughout the Christian East in the centuries following. The Catholic Encyclopedia notes that it wasn't commonly celebrated in the West until the tenth century. Pope Callixtus III elevated the Transfiguration to a feast of the universal Church and established August 6 as the date of its celebration. This traveling exhibit details the history and various aspects of the shroud, and includes as its centerpiece, a full-length photographic image of the shroud itself. Troszczcie się nie o ten pokarm, który ginie, ale o ten, który trwa na wieki (J 6:27) Całe życie człowieka skupione jest na tym, aby żadnemu z członków rodziny nie zabrakło chleba, aby nikt w domu nie głodował. Jesteśmy zapracowani. Wielu z nas w trosce o zabezpieczenie finansowe pracuje na kilka etatów. Kiedy przychodzi odpoczynek jesteśmy niespokojni, że coś jeszcze powinienem zdobyć, aby moim bliskim lepiej się żyło. Nawet w kościele podczas niedzielnej Eucharystii, myślami jesteśmy w pracy Czasem stoimy przed górą i mamy poczucie, że nie zdobędziemy jej naszym wysiłkiem. Nie wiemy, jak się do tego zabrać i wszystko porzucamy. W Przewodniku po duchowości Ojców Pustyni Anselma Grüna czytamy: Gdy wstaję rano, wystarczy, że wyproszę Boże błogosławieństwo na ten dzień. Dziś chciałbym zrobić to, czego się ode mnie wymaga. Jedno po drugim, krok za krokiem to jest droga, którą wszyscy możemy iść, nie przemęczając się ponad miarę. Jeśli przestraszę się sterty dokumentów leżących na biurku i będę załatwiać trochę tu, trochę tam nie posunę się naprzód. Jeżeli w obliczu moich błędów cofam się i sądzę, że nie jestem w stanie się poprawić, to nigdy nie zacznę. Sam rezygnuję z siebie. A wystarczy każdego dnia zagrabić małą część pola naszej duszy. Pewnego dnia cała dusza będzie uprawiona. Poświęćmy Bogu choćby 10% czasu, który spędzamy na troski. Prośmy naszego Pana Jezusa Chrystusa, aby przemieniał nasze troski ziemskie w niebiańskie. Spędzajmy więcej czasu na modlitwie, lekturze Słowa Bożego, częstej Spowiedzi i Komunii Świętej. Niechaj naszą najważniejszą troską podczas ziemskiej wędrówki, będzie życie wieczne, bo do niego zostaliśmy stworzeni. Złóżmy naszą przyszłość w rękach kochającego Ojca- w Jego Boskiej opatrzności, a wówczas nasze serce będzie pełne ufności i pokoju.
