November 2, 2014 All Souls Page Four FEAST OF ALL SOULS November 2 MESSAGE FOR MILLENNIUM OF ALL SOULS' DAY Pope John Paul II ( ) Prayer of intercession has great value for the deceased Contempla on of the lives of those who have followed Christ encourages us to lead a good, upright Chris an life which makes us "worthy of the kingdom of God" (2 Thes 1:5). Thus we are called to "supernatural vigilance", in the words of Cardinal Perraud (Le re a l'occasion du neuvieme centenaire de la fete pour les morts), so that we can prepare ourselves each day for eternal life. As Cardinal John Henry Newman emphasized: "We are not simply to believe, but to watch; not simply to love, but to watch; not simply to obey, but to watch;... and thus it happens that watching is a suitable test of a Chris an". This is because to watch is "to be detached from what is present, and to live in what is unseen; to live in the thought of Christ as he came once, and as he will come again; to desire his second coming" (Parochial and Plain Sermons, IV, 22). The prayers of intercession and pe on which the Church never ceases to raise to God have great value. They are "characteris c of a heart a uned to God's mercy" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2635). he Lord always lets himself be moved by his children's supplica ons, for he is the God of the living. During the Eucharist, through the general intercessions and the Memento for the dead, the assembled community presents to the Father of all mercies those who have died, so that through the trial of purgatory they will be purified, if necessary and a ain eternal joy. In entrus ng them to the Lord we recognize our solidarity with them and share in their salva on in this wondrous mystery of the communion of saints. The Church believes that the souls detained in purgatory "are helped by the prayers of the faithful and most of all by the acceptable sacrifice of le altar" (Council of Trent, Decree on Purgatory), as well as by "alms and other works of piety" (Eugene IV, Bull Laetantur coeli). "In fact, that same holiness, which is derived simply from their par cipa on in the Church's holiness, represents their first and fundamental contribu on to the holiness of the Church herself, which is the 'communion of saints'" (Chris fideles laici, n. 17). 7. I therefore encourage Catholics to pray fervently for the dead, for their family members and for all our brothers and sisters who have died, that they may obtain the remission of the punishments due to their sins and may hear the Lord's call: "Come, O my dear soul to eternal repose in the arms of my goodness, which has prepared eternal delights for you" (Francis de Sales, Introduc on to the Devout Life, 17, 4). As I entrust the faithful who will pray for the dead to the intercession of Our Lady, of St Odilo and of St Joseph, patron of a happy death, I cordially grant my Apostolic Blessing to them and to the members of the diocesan community of Autun, to the members of the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Cluny and to the readers of the bulle n Lumiere et vie. I willingly extend it during the millennial year to all who pray for the inten on of the souls in purgatory, who take part in the Eucharist and who offer sacrifices for the dead. ( ) What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone? From the Va can, 2 June 1998 An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: in thanksgiving, for the inten ons of another person or as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died for the souls in purgatory. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one s soul. We find not only the origins of this prac ce da ng to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance. Offering Mass for a special Inten on is a long standing tradi on in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are obtained for whom the Mass is said. Page Five All Souls November 2, 2014 Last Sunday, October 26 nearly two-hundred area Catholics received the 2014 Chris fideles Awards from Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago and presented by their Episcopal Vicars at the annual Archdiocesan Award Ceremony held at Holy Name Cathedral. The awards have been presented to individual prac cing Catholics who demonstrate an understanding of the Catholic Church s teaching and exercise their faith in service to their church and community. Our own family Mr. & Mrs. Jan and Wladyslwa MITORAJ were honored at the ceremony for thier dedica on to St. Ferdinand parish. Congratula ons! It is a blessing to have you in our faith community. LASALLIAN LOUNGE CONCERT Sunday November 16th, 2014 at 2pm Duo 617 - A Celebra on of Flute/Guitar Works from Across the Globe. Duo 617 was recently created by guitarist Zhivko Nikolov and flu st Sco Douglas. A collabora on of 6 strings and 17 tone holes, they unite as one musical en ty to explore an exci ng repertoire from across the globe. They will be performing Bach s Sonata in E major, Bartok s Romanian Folk Dances, Piazzolla s Histoire of Tango and Ibert s Entr acte. Sco Douglas is a Chicago-based chamber/orchestral musician and has performed in some of the most pres gious venues throughout the country. He was the first piccoloist to win the Chicago College of Performing Arts Solo Compe on and performed Vivaldi s Piccolo Concerto in C major, RV 443, with the CCPA Baroque Orchestra in September. Bulgarian guitarist Zhivko Nikolov has been on the facul es of the Gasse School of Music and the St. Nicholas School of the Arts since 2013 and has been teaching privately since 2006. Kościół wspomina tego dnia w liturgii wszystkich wierzących w Chrystusa, którzy odeszli już z tego świata, a teraz przebywają w czyśćcu. Choć Uroczystość Wszystkich Świętych zdecydowanie różni się od Dnia Zadusznego, razem jednak te dni przypominają nam prawdę o wspólnocie Kościoła, obejmującej świętych w niebie, pokutujących w czyśćcu i żyjących jeszcze na ziemi. Wśród tych trzech stanów Kościoła dokonuje się, poprzez modlitwę, pamięć czy ofiarę, ciągła wymiana dóbr duchowych. W tej łączności (komunii) wyraża się świętych obcowanie. ODPUSTY ZA ZMARŁYCH Pierwsze dni listopada stanowią zaproszenie do uzyskania przez wiernych odpustu zupełnego i ofiarowania go za zmarłych. Odpust zupełny jest to darowanie człowiekowi przez Boga wszystkich kar doczesnych, należnych za grzechy odpuszczone już co do winy w sakramencie pokuty. Kto uzyska odpust zupełny dla siebie uniknie kar czyśćcowych. Kto uzyska odpust zupełny za zmarłych ratuje dusze z czyśćca. Oto okoliczności umożliwiające uzyskanie odpustu w najbliższych dniach: Od południa dnia Wszystkich Świętych i przez cały Dzień Zaduszny w kościołach i kaplicach publicznych można uzyskać odpust zupełny, ale tylko jeden raz. Warunki zyskania odpustu są następujące: 1) pobożne nawiedzenie kościoła lub kaplicy, 2) odmówienie "Ojcze nasz" i "Wierzę w Boga", 3) dowolna modlitwa w intencjach Ojca św., 4) Spowiedź i Komunia św. (Wykluczenie wszelkiego przywiązania do jakiegokolwiek grzechu, nawet powszedniego (jeżeli jest brak pełnej dyspozycji wykluczenia upodobania do jakiegokolwiek grzechu, odpust będzie tylko cząstkowy) W dniach 1-8 listopada można także pozyskać odpust zupełny za nawiedzenie cmentarza pod wyżej wymienionymi warunkami. W pozostałe dni roku za nawiedzenie cmentarza pozyskuje się odpust cząstkowy. Ważne: Trzy warunki: spowiedź, Komunia św. i modlitwy mogą być dopełnione w ciągu wielu dni przed lub po wypełnieniu danej czynności nagradzanej otrzymaniem odpustu, ale musi być między nimi łączność. Po jednej spowiedzi sakramentalnej można uzyskać wiele odpustów zupełnych, a po jednej Komunii św. i jednej modlitwie można uzyskać tylko jeden odpust zupełny. Dzisiejsza uroczystość ma charakter bardzo radosny. Wspominamy bowiem dzisiaj wszystkich tych, którzy żyli przed nami i wypełniając w swoim życiu Bożą wolę, osiągnęli wieczne szczęście przebywania z Bogiem w niebie. Kościół wspomina nie tylko oficjalnie uznanych świętych, czyli tych beatyfikowanych i kanonizowanych, ale także wszystkich wiernych zmarłych, którzy już osiągnęli zbawienie i przebywają w niebie. Widzi w nich swoich orędowników u Boga i przykłady do naśladowania. Wstawiennictwa Wszystkich Świętych wzywa się w szczególnie ważnych wydarzeniach życia Kościoła. Śpiewa się wówczas Litanię do Wszystkich Świętych, która należy do najstarszych litanijnych modlitw Kościoła i jako jedyna występuje w księgach liturgicznych (w liturgii Wigilii Paschalnej; ponadto także w obrzędzie poświęcenia kościoła i ołtarza oraz w obrzędzie święceń).

Należy do nich: posługa podczas Mszy świętej w niedzielę i dzień powszedni, udział w cotygodniowym spotkaniu w grupie, wypełnienie "słowa życia", nauka dobrej modlitwy, apostolstwo w rodzinie i posługa wobec braci. Zadania te są wprowadzane stopniowo poprzez różnego rodzaju ćwiczenia i zabawy. Spotkania koncentrują się na wypracowaniu "sprawności" - cech dziecka Bożego. Pomóżmy dzieciom wzrastać w wierze, wytrwać w praktykach religijnych, towarzyszyć im w budowaniu dobrych relacji z Bogiem i Kosciolem. Serdecznie zapraszamy!!! Ufamy, że odtąd dzieci będą się chętnie na nich się modliły! November 2, 2014 All Souls Page Thirteen If I ve wri en about this before, forgive me, but frankly, I can t remember. Anyway, it s the old joke about two guys speaking of death. The first guy says, I d give anything to know where I m going to die. The second guy perhaps finds this macabre because he says, That s crazy! before adding, Why would you possibly want to know where you re going to die? The first guy answers, Because if I knew where I was going to die, I d never go near the place. I didn t say it was a great joke, but I find it humorous, and more than a li le thought-provoking. Yesterday was All Saints Day. Today is All Souls Day. Welcome to the beginning of the end of the year, a me for remembering that it s the beginning of the end of us as well, which is borderline macabre in itself. But it s also true: every day since our very first day brings us closer to our very last day. My friend Judy s dad died in March. My friend Stanley died a few weeks later. My friend Bob died in June. My cousin Pat died a few weeks later. Huh? Perhaps because of these passings, or perhaps because I turned sixty this year, or perhaps because of the desperate news playing out every night on TV, death seems to be more in my mindset these days. But that s not a bad thing, really... I heard a news story a few weeks back about some guy out east who wrote his own obituary. A funny one that went viral. I didn t bother to look it up, but it got me to thinking about the self-authored autobituary. For others, it s a way to make sure they are remembered the way they want to be remembered. While I m not jumping feet first into wri ng my own, I understand the appeal/benefit-- of doing so. As one blogger intends to post (with the help of a friend) upon her end, If you re reading this, I m dead If you re reading this, I hope I m not. Dead, I mean. But since I put these words together each week a week or so before the column runs--to make deadline, ironically--i can t say for sure I ll last that long. None of us can, and that s what makes All Saints and All Souls celebratory occasions. Today s readings are chosen from the Masses of the Dead, and the suggested texts as printed in our Seasonal Missale es define the celebra on. From Ezekiel: The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. From Romans: Brothers and sisters Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. From Jesus himself: For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day. If I knew where I was going to die, I wouldn t go near the place either. I m in no hurry, you know? But somewhere, someday down the road is my end day. Yours, too. Then why are we celebra ng? Because we have hope in what comes next. And hope doesn t disappoint.
