Typhoon Haiyan Philippines Emergency Appeal Just a few days ago, a storm of tremendous size and impact, Typhoon Haiyan, has passed over the Philippines, killing nearly 10,000 of our Filipino brothers and sisters and with more than 600,000 displaced. Unfortunately, the region is barely recovering from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake just three weeks ago and there is a shortage of supplies. Typhoon Haiyan is the equivalent to a category 5 hurricane and the impact from the storm has left the Philippines and nearby islands with no water, shelter, or electricity. CRS will prioritize emergency shelter, water and sanitation, household relief items (blankets, kitchen items, cookware), potable water, and toilets in this time of emergency. Catholic Relief Services is working with the local government, Caritas and local parishes to maximize response and recovery efforts to reach those most affected by this destructive storm. Parish Life Updates... Music at Mass: In last weekend s bulletin we posed the question, What is the voice for music at Mass? Opera, country, jazz, rock and other forms all have a particular voice that appeals to one s preferences. Music at Mass, however, must inspire us to sing and pray well and its voice is our collective voices praising the Lord. Liturgical music can t be solely based on a favorite kind of music opinions. Last Saturday a gifted musician, Glenn de Castro, began leading the music at the 5pm Mass. Starting next Sunday music will resume at the 8am Mass led by Karen Huber. Mic Archer (pianist, percussionist), Paul Hyski (organist) and Ewa Fair will begin to create and develop the foundations for music at the 10am Mass more to come. Mr. Archer will also accompany the children s choir at Family Mass, and Mr. Hyski will also be the organist for the 11:30am Mass in Polish. Mr. Shack our long time organist continues to play the piano for the 8:30am daily Mass. Welcome Glenn, Paul and Mic to St. Thecla. Senior members of The St. Patrick High School choral group are scheduled to sing with Mr. de Castro at the 5pm Mass today and we are delighted they can be with us. Pray unceasingly as our world becomes increasingly secularized and violent...including the weather. Starting next Sunday at the conclusion of the announcements let s commit to praying the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) and the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel asking for their guidance, protection and for the conversion of all souls to our Lord. These prayers have been inserted on the front inside cover of the hymnal. For those of us who can remember...during and after World War II, the Korean conflict and the cold war era these prayers were always said at the end of Mass. When the Mass was changed in 1965 these prayers were omitted as a standard part of the Mass, and we stopped saying them. Yet, we still have the option to pray them. The prayer to St. Michael is printed each week on page 5 in the bulletin; below is the Hail Holy Queen. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee to we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn, then, O most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Priest: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. All: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. This coming Friday after the 8:30am Mass volunteers will decorate the sanctuary for Advent your help would be appreciated. Also the group of dedicated people who vacuum and clean the windows every Monday morning (starting at 7am!...or if you can t come until 7:30 that s ok too) could use a couple of extra hands keeping our church clean. The memorial envelops for All Souls: Often I have the opportunity to celebrate special Masses where the names of your deceased loved ones are remembered. Due to the success of the Haunted House we are leaving the infra-structure in place. As this is our largest fund raiser; taking the structure down and rebuilding it is costly and very time consuming. The activities like the Polish school s Christmas play and the Scouts Pancake breakfast will take place in Falcon Hall. Fr. Jose Fernando Zuleta from Transfiguration parish writes: Transfiguration parish is very grateful for the support received from St. Thecla. The donations of $678 and $561 received during the months of September and October have been a great help for us. May the Lord continue to bless us all in this ministry in which we invest our time, talent and treasure so as to be able to continue our mission. In Christ, Fr. Nowe grupy Sycharowskich 12 kroków będą rozpoczynać swoje spotkania jesienią. Zainteresowani winni się już teraz zgłaszać. Kiedy zbierze się grupa, nie większa niż dziesięć osób, to będzie można rozpocząć regularne spotkania w terminie dogodnym dla wszystkich. Zgłaszamy się zaraz, gdy jesteśmy zdecydowani sobie pomóc, żeby otrzymać wstępne materiały informacyjne i pierwszy arkusz materiałów roboczych. St. Thecla School News Jr. High Happenings As the end of the first trimester is upon us, the junior high has been keeping busy. Every week during Hall Time the students have been creating art masterpieces, based on the monthly theme. In Novel Study, the eighth graders recently finished reading Agatha Christie s Murder on the Orient Express. We culminated this great novel with watching the 1974 movie, as well as participating in our own Thecla Murder Mystery! The seventh and eighth grade students also got the opportunity to go see James and the Giant Peach at Notre Dame High School. The students had a great time, and many are looking forward to attending high school there in the next year or two. We ended the trimester with a day that included a Fall Prayer Service, as well as Crazy Hat Day. The prayer service took place around the tree we planted last year for Earth Week. The proceeds from Crazy Hat Day are going to be donated to the Red Cross to help in the Philippines. Congratulations to our Academic Bowl Team Abbie Alonzo, Brighid King, Victoria Olson, Madeline Meade, Nicole Kielba, Gabriella O Hehir, and Elizabeth Malarski proudly represented St. Thecla at the Trinity Academic Bowl and brought home a 2 nd Place Trophy!
