Of all the various apparitions and messages to come out of Fatima a century ago, there is an often neglected component. Sister Lucia, the eldest and longest-living Fatima seer, recorded in her diary that on Oct. 13, 1917, the day the sun danced, St. Joseph appeared at Fatima. As he held the Christ Child, it looked as if they were both offering the world a blessing.

Fr. Bob s Briefs This year, we celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the Marian apparitions of Fatima. Not many people are aware that St. Joseph was present in Fatima s apparitions as well. As a parish dedicated to St. Joseph, I would like to share excerpts from an article by Michael Heinlein entitled, St. Joseph's powerful silent witness at Fatima: Little-known aspect of the apparitions 100 years ago offers much to consider. Of all the various apparitions and messages to come out of Fatima a century ago, there is an often neglected component. Sister Lucia, the eldest and longest-living Fatima seer, recorded in her diary that on Oct. 13, 1917, the day the sun danced, St. Joseph appeared at Fatima. As he held the Christ Child, it looked as if they were both offering the world a blessing. Despite the few details recorded about St. Joseph s brief time on Fatima s stage, interestingly, it is similar to his appearance in the Gospel: in neither did St. Joseph utter a word. The appearance of St. Joseph at Fatima is stark in its simplicity, leaving little wonder why this minor episode in the catalogue of Fatima events is slighted. Yet, despite that fact, the appearance of St. Joseph at the final apparition at Fatima is full of significance that relates to the Fatima s promise of peace. The presence of St. Joseph at the Fatima apparitions evokes this reality and reminds us that the flourishing of family life is an essential part of God s plan for peace. St. Joseph models that way of life by authentically living out his call as a model father, husband and servant of God. St. Joseph s presence at Fatima exalts his example of fatherhood and its essential role in the flourishing of humanity. The Gospels explain that St. Joseph provided for the Holy Family in all circumstances. St. Joseph is the one into whose custody God entrusted his most precious treasures, as was said in Blessed Pope Paul VI s decree naming St. Joseph patron of the universal Church. Dutifully and lovingly, St. Joseph handed on to Jesus the traditions, rituals, customs and prayers of the Jewish faith. Paul VI also exhorted fathers in an August 1976 general audience: And you, fathers, do you pray with your children, with the whole domestic community, at least sometimes? Your example of honesty in thought and action, joined to some common prayer, is a lesson for life, an act of worship of singular value. In this way you bring peace to your homes: Pax huic domui. Remember, it is thus that you build up the Church. This is all present at Fatima, as a witness to the world, encapsulated by St. Joseph tenderly and lovingly holding his Son, God s Son who was entrusted to his care together offering a prayer by invoking God s blessing upon the world. Today s world experiences untold turmoil on account of absentee fathers. Numerous studies keep coming up with the same data. Children without a father figure are lacking something. Sister Lucia said that not only was St. Joseph holding his divine Son at Fatima, but he also was next to the Blessed Virgin Mary. How notable that St. Joseph does not appear without his holy wife. This minor detail underscores St. Joseph s love and fidelity toward the Blessed Mother. St. Joseph was chosen to play an important role in salvation history, there is no doubt. But in God s design, he was also chosen to be Mary s husband carrying with that all that it means to be a husband. It s a temptation to be avoided, losing sight of this spousal chosenness. Statistics in the developed world are staggering where marriages are concerned nearly half end in divorce. Marriage s permanency, commitment and fidelity are all considered constraints to freedom. But for St. Joseph, life and love was no longer about himself when he committed to Mary. The Gospels show how he knew that for peace in a marriage, both spouses must be willing to die to self each day. Spouses truly live for the other. And two become one flesh. At Fatima we see spousal love, where Mary is, Joseph is. The Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph are united most fully through the Incarnation. St. Joseph and Mary model how marital unity is derived from unity in Christ. When spouses truly seek to live as Christ for the other, they are laying a fertile ground in which peace can blossom. The seeds are prayer and self-sacrificial love. In modeling this way of life for their children, Christian spouses do a great service to the human race. John Paul II prayed that the faithful will turn to St. Joseph as a powerful example of Christian living, and always keep before their eyes his humble, mature way of serving and of taking part in the plan of salvation (Custos Redemptoris, 1). This humble and mature way of serving God is evidenced in one of St. Joseph s primary characteristics in the Gospel and his apparition at Fatima: his silence. Silence does not mean complacency, though. St. Joseph s silence highlights his prayerful discernment to know the will of God. But more than that, it illustrates his wholehearted desire unhesitatingly to do God s will, no questions asked! The things we know about St. Joseph from the Gospel all entail such a faithful obedience. But that does not exist in a vacuum; it is produced by a way of life grounded in prayer and sacrificial charity. St. Joseph is a doer who lays down his life to achieve God s purposes in his life. He does not get caught up in himself or his wants, fears or opinions. He hears God s word and responds. How could St. Joseph do any of the things that we know of him living as a faithful and loving spouse, a devoted and caring father and an obedient servant of God if silence was not a part of his life? Silence fueled St. Joseph to answer God s call for him, prayerfully and lovingly. St. Joseph models how peace comes from this way of life after all, the fruit of his life was giving a home to Jesus, the Prince of Peace. However insignificant it might appear, St. Joseph s presence at Fatima adds depth and perspective to its message.

Este año celebramos el centenario de las apariciones marianas de Fátima. No mucha gente esta consciente de que San José también estaba presente en las apariciones de Fátima. Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza W tym roku przypada 100. rocznica Objawień Fatimskich. Niewiele osób wie, że w tym wydarzeniu brał tez udział święty Józef. Jako proboszcz parafii pod Jego Patronatem, chciałbym się podzielić z Wami paroma fragmentami artykułu pod tytułem: Święty Józef cichy świadek Objawień Fatimskich. Mało znany szczegół tamtych wydarzeń skłania do refleksji. Rozmyślając nad orędziem, jakie Matka Boża Fatimska pozostawiła światu 100 lat temu, często pomijamy pewien jego kluczowy aspekt. W swoim dzienniku pod datą 13 października 1917 roku, siostra Łucja (najstarsza i najdłużej żyjąca z trójki rodzeństwa, które doświadczyło Objawień) zapisała, że słońce wtedy tańczyło, zaś w Fatimie pojawił się św. Józef. Trzymał w ramionach Dzieciątko Jezus, obaj zdawali się błogosławić świat. Uderzający w swej prostocie opis św. Józefa w Fatimie jest podobny do Jego opisu w Ewangelii: w obydwu miejscach Święty milczy. Wcale nie dziwi fakt, że ten epizod wydarzeń w Fatimie jest pomijany. Pomimo tego, udział św. Józefa w ostatnim Objawieniu ma głębokie znaczenie symboliczne, związane z fatimskim przesłaniem pokoju. Święty Józef w Fatimie przypomina nam, iż rozwój życia rodzinnego jest istotnym elementem w Bożym planie zbawienia i pokoju. Uosabia to on sam, w sposób autentyczny wypełniając powołanie wzorowego ojca, małżonka oraz sługi Wszechmogącego. Poprzez obecność świętego Józefa w Fatimie, podkreślona zostaje wyjątkowa rola ojcostwa w rozwoju ludzkości. Z Ewangelii wiemy, że Józef zapewniał Świętej Rodzinie byt. Błogosławiony papież Paweł VI napisał, że to właśnie temu człowiekowi Bóg powierzył straż nad Swymi najcenniejszymi skarbami. Opiekun Jezusa z miłością i oddaniem przekazał Mu tradycje, rytuały i modlitwy judaizmu. Paweł VI podkreślił wyjątkową rolę ojców również w czasie audiencji generalnej w sierpniu 1976. Powiedział wtedy, iż ojcowska autentyczność myśli i działania, w połączeniu z codzienną modlitwą, stanowi cenną lekcję życia na co dzień. Jest to akt czci o niesamowitym znaczeniu. Tak to ojcowie dbają o pokój we własnych domach, równocześnie umacniając Kościół. Wszystko to widać w Fatimie, w osobie świętego Józefa trzymającego w ramionach Syna Bożego oraz w tym, jak oni wspólnie błogosławią światu. Współczesny świat straszliwie cierpi z powodu nieobecnych ojców. Badania i statystyki mówią same za siebie dzieci wychowane bez ojców mają duże braki. Siostra Łucja wspomina, iż święty Józef w Fatimie był blisko Maryi. Józef pojawia się w towarzystwie żony, a to z kolei podkreśla Jego miłość i wierność wobec Niej. Święty Józef niewątpliwie odgrywa znaczącą rolę w historii zbawienia, ale Bóg wybrał Go także na męża Maryi. Związki pozamałżeńskie i brak tej szczególnej małżeńskiej więzi są w krajach rozwiniętych kuszącą alternatywą niemal połowa związków małżeńskich kończy się tam rozwodem. Nierozerwalność małżeństwa, oddanie i wierność uważa się za przeszkody na drodze do osobistej wolności. Jednak Józef przestał myśleć o sobie w chwili, kiedy przyjął do siebie Maryję. Wiedział, iż małżonkowie żyją dla siebie nawzajem. Tych dwoje stało się jednym ciałem. Objawienie Fatimskie jest dla nas przykładem miłości małżeńskiej gdzie Maryja, tam i Józef. Najświętsza Maryja i św. Józef jednoczą się najpełniej poprzez Wcielenie. W tych dwóch postaciach widzimy, że jedność małżeńska wywodzi się z jedności z Chrystusem. Pragnienie życia, wzorem Chrystusa dla siebie nawzajem, czyni małżeństwo żyzną glebą, na której może rozkwitnąć pokój. Przekazując taki sposób życia własnym dzieciom, chrześcijańskie małżeństwa oddają całej ludzkości nieocenioną przysługę. Jan Paweł II modlił się o to, aby wszyscy żywili coraz większe nabożeństwo do Patrona Kościoła powszechnego i miłość do Odkupiciela, któremu on tak przykładnie służył. Dzięki temu cały lud chrześcijański nie tylko jeszcze gorliwiej będzie się uciekał do św. Józefa i ufnie wzywał jego opieki, ale także będzie miał zawsze przed oczyma jego pokorną, dojrzałą służbę i udział w ekonomii zbawienia ( Redemptoris Custos 1). Dowód na ową dojrzałą służbę Józefa widać w pewnej cesze, obecnej zarówno w Ewangeliach, jak i w Fatimie Jego milczeniu. Milczenie nie oznacza tu wszakże obojętności. W przypadku Józefa oznacza ono przemodlone pragnienie poznania woli Bożej i wypełniania Jego poleceń bez wahania. Tego rodzaju posłuszeństwo jest wynikiem życia opartego na modlitwie oraz ofiarnej dobroczynności. Święty Józef jest człowiekiem czynu, który poświęcił własne życie, aby służyć Bogu. Nie zwraca uwagi na własne pragnienia, lęki, czy opinie. Józef słyszy Słowo Boże i odpowiada na nie. Gdyby nie zachowywał milczenia, święty Józef nie mógłby dokonać tego wszystkiego, co o Nim wiemy (wierny i kochający mąż, oddany i troskliwy opiekun, posłuszny sługa Boga). Milczenie napędzało pragnienie Józefa, aby odpowiedzieć na wezwanie Boga. Święty Józef pokazuje nam, ile spokoju płynie z takiego życia. Zaopiekował się przecież Jezusem, Księciem Pokoju. Obecność św. Józefa podczas Objawień Fatimskich przydaje im dodatkowej głębi.

The purpose of the St. Joseph Student Council is to promote our school s Catholic Identity through planning liturgies and service projects and fostering school spirit through planned activities for our entire student body. Our three-year-olds had an apple taste testing. According to our young connoisseurs, 57% preferred green apples; 21.5% yellow and 21.5%preferred red apples. What kind of apples do you like? The September theme for our four-year-olds is family. One of their activities is to draw illustrate and discuss what they like to do with their family. I invite you to stop ion and view our art work and the creativity of our children. I would love to give you a tour and show off our school children. As I mentioned last week, Dr. Rigg, the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese visited our school last Friday. He was very impressed with our building he loved the blue paint and said he could feel the spirit and family atmosphere that exists in our school. In speaking with him we found that we both became principals at the same age 26, although I am slightly older. It was a very nice visit and I am happy he had a chance to spend some time with our faculty and children. We have had a few more calls about our preschool program. At this time I am sad to say our three-year-old program is full and we can only accept children on a waiting list. We do still have space in our four-year-old program along with most other grades.
