May 25, 2003 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Three My Dear Brothers and Sisters, As the Father loves me, so I also love you. The God of Love does not know time and space. The thoughts of God are above the thoughts of humans, and His ways are never ending. All good things come from the Lord, for which I like to praise God through the hands of Our Lady of Czêstochowa. I have been among you for almost seven years. I was called to St. Ferdinand Parish from service in Nigeria. Together let us praise God and seek Him in the different situations of our lives. God blessed our work during this time through His goodness and His presence. Not long ago I was speaking with Father Cortesi and he said, Although it is almost seven years of fruitful work, I remember your first day in the parish after arriving from Africa. It is true that good things go very fast, but good things, when they touch you, are never ending. They are always in your heart. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank you, Father Cortesi, for your very big heart, for welcoming me and all the Polish community. It is not easy to do things alone, so God helps us through our friends who come to our aid. Therefore, I would like to praise the Lord for friends who helped me during this time in the parish especially my brother priests, Polish and American, and our dear sisters, the Missionary Sisters of Christ the King. Thank you to all my lay friends working in the rectory, all the Polish and American groups especially the Polish Catholic School, the Rosary Group, the youth in Laudamus, the Good Shepherd Club, the Highlanders, and also the choirs, Kropeczki, Serduszka, Horyzont, Rodoœæ, Fiat, and all those in liturgical service. In my farewell, know that I love the parishioners of St. Ferdinand and I would like to praise God for all of you and your kindness, for your love of God and his Mother, Our Lady of Czêstochowa. Finally, I ask you in the way of St. Paul the Apostle, to keep me in your hearts and in your prayers, that I may be of service to God as long as it is His will. My soul rejoices in God my Savior, for He has done great things for me. Father Walter Juszczak, CssR On Monday, May 26, St. Ferdinand parish will observe Memorial Day with a special Mass at 9:00 a.m. Traditionally, Memorial Day is a time when we honor and remember those who have died in defense of our country. This year, Memorial Day takes on renewed meaning with the impact of the war in Iraq and tensions in other parts of the world. After Mass, weather permitting, there will be a special ceremony at the Marian Shrine in the garden. [Please note: the Masses on Monday, May 26th will be at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. There will be NO 8 a.m. Mass on Monday, May 26th.] Is it difficult for you to get up and down the aisle at Communion time to receive Holy Communion? Would you like to have a pew reserved for you in the front of the church so that a minister of the Eucharist could bring Communion to you? These are questions that were raised at our last meeting of the Pastoral Staff. If this issue affects you... If you feel there is a need to have an area set aside for people who use a wheelchair, a walker or a cane in order to get around, then please call Wendy Braunsdorf at the rectory (622-5900 ext. 238) and let her know so that she may communicate your thoughts and suggestions to the rest of the staff at the next staff meeting in early June. CHRISTIANITY Love him totally who gave himself totally for your love. St. Clare of Assisi Pray in name for the protection of these Parishioners who are serving our country in the Armed Forces: Jeffrey Foerster, U.S. Army James Brown, U.S. Army Diosdado Soriano, Specialist, U.S. Army Pfc. Toribio J. Urian, U.S. Army Pfc. Rudyard M. Urian, U.S. Army Justin Jones, U.S. Marine Corps Adam Malkmus, U.S. Army Jeffery P. Tyson, U.S. Army Robert E. Kelley, U.S. Army Erik T. Herrera, U.S. Air Force Farid Farah, U.S. Army Reserves Let us pray. God of love and compassion, before this season of unrest, we had grown comfortable with thinking of them only as they relate to us - as our parents and spouses, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends. Today, history and circumstance, force us to release them into your care and into our country s service. We pray for them and bless them in your name. Grant them your protection and a safe return home. Amen.
Page Four Sixth Sunday of Easter May 25, 2003 As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. May 25, 2003 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Nine One of the first debates in the early church was this: Should Christians celebrate Easter each year on the date that Christ rose from the dead (the fourteenth day of the Jewish month named Nisan, according to the gospel of John), or should they celebrate Easter each year on the day of the week that he rose from the dead Sunday? Some of the churches in Asia said date. After all, Jesus rising from the dead changed history, and we ought to keep the date holy. (And this is what the churches later decided to do with Christmas, which we celebrate every year on December 25, no matter what day of the week it is.) The church in Rome said day : Sunday the Lord s Day is the best time to keep the solemn feast of the resurrection. Sunday was our first and for a century or so, only holy day. How could Easter not be on a Sunday? Rome won the debate. To this day, all churches celebrate Easter on a Sunday and never on a weekday. Recently, the bishops of the United States had a similar discussion: Should we continue to keep the solemn feast of the Lord s Ascension on a Thursday the fortieth day after Easter, according to the Acts of the Apostles or should we move it to a Sunday, the Lord s Day. A few years back, the bishops in the western states and in Canada wanted to try celebrating Ascension on Sunday instead of Thursday. Rome approved their plan as an experiment to see if more people would be able to participate in Mass if Ascension Day was a Sunday. It worked. So the bishops of the United States discussed whether the whole country should change the celebration of Ascension from a Thursday to a Sunday. They agreed to make the choice by region. Rome approved. So this year, Ascension Day is Sunday, June 1st, in most of the United States. The psalm for this solemn feast bids us to sing. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy, a blare of trumpets for the Lord! All you peoples, clap your hands. Sing praise! Sunday is the Lord s Day, and the ascension reveals the risen Lord s glory. Let us all keep holy this great feast of our God. Copyright 2001 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL 60622-1101; 800-933-1800.
