The proceeds of the collection continue to provide opportunities to brothers and sisters in Latin America who, while lacking financial resources, are rich in faith and love for Our Lord Jesus Christ. Last year, through the generosity of the faithful across the United States, proceeds provided financial assistance to more than 470 pastoral ministry projects in 21 countries. He learns that people who have seen and heard him are abuzz with news that he may be one of the great prophets finally returning to their once proud nation. This is the best people can hope for. It is no surprise that a subjected and humiliated people with a long memory of good times would look for a savior-king. They are vulnerable enough to snatch and make their leader anyone with boldness, arrogance, and power. This is a dangerous temptation, and Jesus knows it. So who is he, then? Is he one of those great men of the past sent by God for deliverance? He is more. He is, by his own public admission, the Messiah, God s anointed one. That is the truth of his being. It is a quiet truth to be held by them until it reveals itself in God s own time. SERVANT AGAIN Because we have the whole gospel two millennia later, we know that the Messiah, the Christ, can claim this title. And we know that a price is exacted. We know the price is his death leading to life. He is the suffering servant of whom Isaiah spoke. He is the one who has heard and obeyed God s word and who looks to the Lord God for help. And we who confess him as Messiah and Lord must imitate him in clear, down-to-earth ways, as James says, What good is it... if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? (2:14). We must walk the talk. If we are to walk in the presence of the Lord, we must reach out to help our neighbor. If we are to dwell in the land of the living, we must assist others to attain the same goal. September 17, 2006 Twenty-fourth Ordinary Sunday Page Nine Proszę kochanych Braci i Sióstr! Jak powiada mędrzec Kohelet wszystko ma swój czas i jest ustalona godzina na wszystkie sprawy pod niebem. Jest czas smutku i radości, czas krzyża i zmartwychwstania, czas spotkania i pożegnania... W Jezusie Chrystusie ten czas osiąga pełnię i otwiera się na wieczność. A to, co na prawdę się zaczyna nigdy się nie kończy. Odtąd człowiek staje się bliźnim, z którym można się zabliźnić. Odtąd Bóg ma ludzkie serce i na obliczu człowieka można dostrzec Boga. Na koniec mojego pobytu w parafii św. Ferdynanda dziękuję Bogu w Trójcy Jedynemu, że mogłem ujrzeć Jego oblicze promieniujące z Waszych serc i oczu. To odkrywanie oblicza Chrystusa możliwe było dzięki wielu życzliwym osobom, które wspierały mnie modlitwą, dobrym słowem, gościnnością i ofiarą. Moją szczególną wdzięczność kieruję do Waszego ks. Proboszcza Zdzisława Torby, który przez swoją gościnność sprawił, że czułem się u św. Ferdynanda, jak we własnym domu. Pragnę serdecznie podziękować mojemu koledze, ks. Mariuszowi Stefanowskiemu, za zaproszenie mnie tutaj i wszelką dobroć mi okazaną. Z ks. Mariuszem znamy się już 10 lat. Przez dwa lata byliśmy razem na jedym roku w Wyższym Seminarium Duchownym w Siedlcach. Bardzo dziękuję ks. Romanowi Ratajowi za to, że był dla mnie wspaniałym przewodnikiem po U.S.A. Pielgrzymowaliśmy razem do Amerykańskiej Częstochowy i mogliśmy zwiedzić wiele pięknych miejsc Stanów Zjednoczonych. Moją wdzięczność wyrażam ks. Williamowi Holbrook za pomoc mi okazaną przy nauce języka angielskiego. Gorąco dziękuję siostrom zakonnym za ich otwartość, dobroć i piękne świadectwo życia. Staje mi przed oczami wiele szlachetnych i życzliwych osób świeckich, które spotkałem w parafii św. Ferdynanda. Mam świadomość, że nie jestem w stanie każdemu z Was podziękować imiennie. Jednak zapewniam, że pozostajecie w mojej pamięci i modlitwie. Myślę zwłaszcza o Braciach i Siostrach z Kółek Różanćowych, z Klubu Dobrego Pasterza, góralach z Klubu Miłośników Podhalan i Tatr oraz wszystkich parafianach, których spotkałem podczas mojego pobytu w Chicago. Na koniec powtarzam za Norwidem: Tęskno będzie mi, Panie, do tych ludzi, którzy mają tak za tak i nie za nie, którzy w Bogu złożyli swoją ufność i stają się świadkami nadziei zdolnymi przemienić oblicze amerykańskiej ziemi. Hypertension, or high blood pressure is know as the Silent Killer, because very often it causes no signs or symptoms to warn the individual of its presence. Periodic blood pressure tests can be quick way to detect a serious health problem and prevent stroke. The screenings will take place every fourth Friday of the month from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Life Center. This month the blood pressure screening will take place on Friday, September 22, 2006. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) We live our commitment to proclaim God s love by worshiping, working, and celebrating together The words come from the mission statement of St. Thomas of Villanova parish in Palatine, IL. I d never been there before, but I went a few weeks back for the installation of their sixth pastor. Fr. Thomas Rzepiela was the pastor of my home parish--st. Constance in Chicago--for fourteen years before leaving in 2001 for a five-year stint at Chicago s Holy Name Cathedral. I remember he drew a large crowd for his farewell Mass then, and he drew a large crowd again at his recent Installation. On that day, the words of the STOV mission statement rang vibrant and true. During the homily, Bishop Timothy Lyne told the faith community filling the beautiful church that they were blessed to have Fr. Tom as their new pastor. I can speak with authority on this because I saw Fr. Tom in action at St. Constance for his many years there. In fact, I attended the all-parish meeting before he was even assigned when an archdiocesan representative asked our faith community what was important to us in a new pastor. Somebody shot his hand up and said (paraphrased) that we needed an excellent administrator and homilist who was also caring, compassionate, and visionary. The man from downtown said that God already had a job. Shortly thereafter, so did Fr. Tom. And now he s a pastor once more. Bishop Lyne pointed out that STOV was Fr. Tom s first assignment out of the seminary. Home again, I guess. I ve got the feeling, though, that home to Fr. Tom is wherever he can serve God s people. While waiting in the reception line to wish him well, I met a guy from the Cathedral who said that Fr. Tom had been very helpful to him. I told the guy that Fr. Tom s been helpful to me, too, especially when my dad died. In an old 7th Heaven episode, one of Lucy s friends tells Reverend Camden that he-- the Rev--is a good and caring person. Embarrassed, Camden says that it s just the job, to which Lucy s friend says, Maybe, but I think it s the man What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? James asks. Clearly, the new pastor of STOV has both, and as I implied earlier, so do the folks in the pews. The Installation Mass was prayerful and absolutely alive with music, and the reception was well-staffed with smiling volunteers. And here s the thing. I know that these events don t just happen. I know that they take many hearts and many hands. James says that faith without works is dead. Agreed. But faith and works were alive and thriving in Palatine a few weeks ago, and I suspect that Fr. Tom and his parishioners are just getting going. We live our commitment to proclaim God s love by worshiping, working, and celebrating together Or, paraphrased, by faith and works. Not a bad mission statement. For them. For all of us.
