Letter to the Editor I guess we ll leave the old year resolving some unfinished business. For the past couple of years I have been more or less serving as editor of this weekly publication. During that time I must admit I have had the opportunity to add a few lighter comments regarding certain activities in our parish whereas at other times it has been necessary to be totally serious. Most recently I included a short blurb dealing with the heating of Slavic Village. To anyone who was around during the time of Fr. Alcuin, that phrase would be familiar. Well my remarks resulted in a semi-anonymous letter of rebuke from some long time parishioner John Doe. His letter was mistakenly directed to our new Pastor, Fr. Orzech. Below is Fr. Eric s polite response to the anonymous person s letter. Since no address or name was given, it is necessary to respond in this fashion. I commend Fr. Eric for his patience. In my arrogance I myself would never respond to an anonymous letter let alone waste my time reading it. Here is Fr. Eric s response: Dear Lifelong Parishioner of St. Stanislaus, John, Thank you for your letter and the concerns you expressed. As I try to respond to all correspondence, please know that your semi-anonymous communication leaves this bulletin note as my only means. First, I am very sorry that you seem to have not had good experiences with Polish priests in the past. Your continued presence at St. Stanislaus, therefore, says much for your perseverance. All I can do is pledge that we will try to do better in the future. Second, while the pastor is ultimately responsible for everything that happens at a parish, sometimes he finds things out after the fact. While your point is well noted, virtually all the other parishioners expressed an appreciation for the message being conveyed with an air of humor which the author intended. However, I have passed along your concerns to the author and would encourage you to direct any future such matters as there may be to the appropriate party, our parish bulletin editor. Thank you for your commitment to the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus. Together let s work to make our parish the best that it can be. May God bless you and all of our parishioners. Fr. Eric So, there you have it. Someone out there likes to heat Slavic Village and does not understand why we would prefer to spend or save our money otherwise. Since our resources are limited I always try to be careful when spending any funds which have been donated to our parish. I know how difficult it is for most people to part with money nowadays. So many people here are on fixed incomes that is would be a sin to accept their hard earned money and flippantly squander it. Enough said. Now we prepare to leave 2012 behind us. During that time we had about 35 baptisms and 35 funerals, about 15 weddings, a handful of First Communions and First Confessions, about twenty-five Confirmations, hundreds of adult Confessions, thousands of Communions, over eight thousand visitors and one God who loved us, challenged us, stayed with us and will lead us into 2013 and beyond. Nie tylko Syn i Matka... Nasz Zbawiciel chciał przyjść na świat w ludzkiej rodzinie. Dlatego pierwszą rzeczą, którą Pan przez swoją obecność uświęcił, była rodzina. Poza pielgrzymką do Jerozolimy z dwunastoletnim Jezusem nie mamy w Ewangeliach opisanego żadnego wydarzenia z tych trzydziestu lat życia w Nazarecie. Pan stał się Człowiekiem w ludzkiej rodzinie; w ludzkiej rodzinie żył i przez to uświęcił życie rodzinne. Być może dzisiaj ma to większe znaczenie niż kiedykolwiek wcześniej. Bo to w naszych czasach, także w naszym kraju, podejmowane są próby przedefiniowania małżeństwa i rodziny. Dlatego chcemy wpatrywać się w przykład Świętej Rodziny i od niej się uczyć. To Józef był głową Świętej Rodziny. Jako mąż Maryi i ojciec Jezusa według Prawa troszczył się o Ich bezpieczeństwo i utrzymanie. Nie był ojcem cielesnym Jezusa, jednakże spełniał obowiązki ojca. Ojcem Jezusa nazywała go Maryja zwracając się do dwunastoletniego Jezusa. Czytamy o tym w Ewangelii: Oto ojciec Twój i ja z bólem serca szukaliśmy Ciebie. (Łk 2:48 BT). Jestem przekonany, że także Jezus zwracał się do Józefa: ojcze. Józef nie tylko był ojcem Jezusa według Prawa, ale troszczył się o niego jak prawdziwy ojciec. To pokazuje, że ojcostwo fizyczne, aczkolwiek ważne, nie jest decydujące. Być ojcem to coś znacznie więcej niż tylko spłodzić dziecko. I nie kończy się z przyniesieniem do domu pieniędzy na utrzymanie rodziny. Ktoś powiedział, że żyjemy w czasach bez ojców. Wydaje się, że jest w tym sporo racji. Bogu dzięki istnieje wciąż spora liczba mężczyzn, którzy są przykładnymi mężami i ojcami. To trzeba zobaczyć i docenić. Ale z drugiej strony coraz więcej dzieci wychowuje się bez ojców. Czasem jest ojciec w domu, ale trudno nazwać go dobrym ojcem. Lub też jest w rodzinie, ale duchowo czy psychicznie jest nieobecny. W roku 2000 ukazała się książka P. Vitza Faith of the Fatherless. The Psychology of Atheism. Autor przedstawia w niej szereg znanych ateistycznych myślicieli z ostatnich czterech stuleci mających wpływ na światopogląd wielu współczesnych. Nie wszyscy, ale większość z nich miało ojców, którzy albo wcześnie zmarli (kiedy ich dzieci były jeszcze małe), albo opuścili swoje rodziny, albo psychicznie byli nieobecni, albo byli bardzo surowi aż do znęcania się nad nimi. Wydaje się to przekonywującym dowodem na to, że dzieci potrzebują troskliwego, kochającego ojca, żeby mogły uwierzyć w dobrego, kochającego Boga. Największe wrażenie zrobiło na mnie porównanie trzech znanych z historii postaci: Mao Tse Tunga, Józefa Stalina oraz Adolfa Hitlera. Przy wszystkich różnicach, tych trzech mężczyzn łączyły dwie rzeczy: 1. Każdy z nich był odpowiedzialny za śmierć milionów istnień ludzkich. 2. Każdy z nich miał ojca, którego trzeba by raczej nazwać tyranem. Zbieg okoliczności? Nie sądzę. Jestem przekonany, że autor udowodnił, jak bardzo ważną rolę pełni ojciec w rozwoju swoich dzieci. Dla swoich dzieci jest ojciec obrazem Boga. To, jaki obraz Boga będą miały, zależy w decydującym stopniu od ojca. Dzieci ojca, który ma dla nich czas, troszczy się o nich, z łatwością czy wręcz naturalnie wierzą, że Bóg jest właśnie taki: silny, troskliwy, kochający. Za pozytywny przykład w tym względzie niech posłuży mała święta Tereska. Kiedy zmarła jej mama, ojciec przejął funkcję wychowawcy świetnie wywiązując się z tego zadania. Statystyki pokazują, że w wymiarze religijnym rola ojca jest nieodzowna. Jest ona nawet większa niż rola matki. Dzieci wierzących i praktykujących ojców w większości przypadków też są wierzące i praktykujące. Przykład matki w tym względzie nie ma tak dużego znaczenia. Przykład św. Moniki pokazuje, że matka może przynajmniej w niektórych przypadkach nadrobić brak dobrego ojca, ale jest to bardzo trudne. Nie zapominajmy też, że św. Monika jest przykładem heroicznej troski o syna. Potrzebujemy przykładów. Wydaje się, że ojcowie potrzebują dobrego przykładu bardziej, niż matki. Czytając wskazania św. Pawła Apostoła dla członków rodziny w trzecim rozdziale Listu do Kolosan znajdziemy pouczenia dla żon, mężów, dzieci, ojców, ale uderza fakt, że brakuje tam wskazań dla matek. Prawdopodobnie dlatego, że natchniony Autor nie uważał ich za konieczne. Kobiety niejako w swojej naturze mają wpisanie bycie matką. Dlatego nie potrzebują takich pouczeń, tak jak potrzebują ich mężczyźni. Dlatego przykład św. Józefa jest tak ważny i potrzebny dla mężów i ojców. Dziecko potrzebuje ojca i matki. Rodzice uzupełniają się. Dlatego ostatecznie nie chodzi o odpowiedź na pytanie, kto w procesie wychowania jest ważniejszy. Dziecko nie tyle potrzebuje raz ojca, a innym razem matki, ile potrzebuje obojga rodziców. Dlatego rozwód jest dla niego wielkim nieszczęściem. To coś w rodzaju trzęsienia ziemi albo innego kataklizmu. Im mniejsze dziecko, tym dotkliwiej przeżywa rozwód rodziców. Najpiękniejszym prezentem dla dzieci jest wzajemna miłość ich rodziców. Jeśli rodzice kochają się wzajemnie, odnoszą do siebie z szacunkiem, pomagają sobie, znajdują czas dla siebie nawzajem, dzieci czują się bezpiecznie. Dlatego właśnie obchodzimy święto Świętej Rodziny: żeby nie tylko uczcić Nowonarodzonego ani też nie tylko Syna z Jego Najświętszą Matką, ale właśnie dlatego, żeby uczcić całą Świętą Rodzinę: Jezusa, Maryję i Józefa. I żeby w nich wskazać na przykład i orędowników dla naszych rodzin. o. Placyd

Blessed are the Peacemakers (an excerpt from Pope Benedict s Message on the World Day for Peace 2013) 1. Each New Year brings the expectation of a better world. In light of this, I ask God, the Father of humanity, to grant us concord and peace, so that the aspirations of all for a happy and prosperous life may be achieved. In effect, our times, marked by globalization with its positive and negative aspects, as well as the continuation of violent conflicts and threats of war, demand a new, shared commitment in pursuit of the common good and the development of all men, and of the whole man. Fifty years after the beginning of the Second Vatican Council, which helped to strengthen the Church s mission in the world, it is heartening to realize that Christians, as the People of God in fellowship with him and sojourning among mankind, are committed within history to sharing humanity s joys and hopes, grief and anguish, as they proclaim the salvation of Christ and promote peace for all. It is alarming to see hotbeds of tension and conflict caused by growing instances of inequality between rich and poor, by the prevalence of a selfish and individualistic mindset which also finds expression in an unregulated financial capitalism. In addition to the varied forms of terrorism and international crime, peace is also endangered by those forms of fundamentalism and fanaticism which distort the true nature of religion, which is called to foster fellowship and reconciliation among people. All the same, the many different efforts at peacemaking which abound in our world testify to mankind s innate vocation to peace. In every person the desire for peace is an essential aspiration which coincides in a certain way with the desire for a full, happy and successful human life. In other words, the desire for peace corresponds to a fundamental moral principle, namely, the duty and right to an integral social and communitarian development, which is part of God s plan for mankind. Man is made for the peace which is God s gift. All of this led me to draw inspiration for this Message from the words of Jesus Christ: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God (Mt 5:9). Gospel beatitude 2. The beatitudes which Jesus proclaimed (cf. Mt 5:3-12 and Lk 6:20-23) are promises. In the biblical tradition, the beatitude is a literary genre which always involves some good news, a gospel, which culminates in a promise. Therefore, the beatitudes are not only moral exhortations whose observance foresees in due time ordinarily in the next life a reward or a situation of future happiness. Rather, the blessedness of which the beatitudes speak consists in the fulfilment of a promise made to all those who allow themselves to be guided by the requirements of truth, justice and love. In the eyes of the world, those who trust in God and his promises often appear naïve or far from reality. Yet Jesus tells them that not only in the next life, but already in this life, they will discover that they are children of God, and that God has always been, and ever will be, completely on their side. They will understand that they are not alone, because he is on the side of those committed to truth, justice and love. Jesus, the revelation of the Father s love, does not hesitate to offer himself in self-sacrifice. Once we accept Jesus Christ, God and man, we have the joyful experience of an immense gift: the sharing of God s own life, the life of grace, the pledge of a fully blessed existence. Jesus Christ, in particular, grants us true peace, which is born of the trusting encounter of man with God. Jesus beatitude tells us that peace is both a messianic gift and the fruit of human effort. In effect, peace presupposes a humanism open to transcendence. It is the fruit of the reciprocal gift, of a mutual enrichment, thanks to the gift which has its source in God and enables us to live with others and for others. The ethics of peace is an ethics of fellowship and sharing. It is indispensable, then, that the various cultures in our day overcome forms of anthropology and ethics based on technical and practical suppositions which are merely subjectivistic and pragmatic, in virtue of which relationships of coexistence are inspired by criteria of power or profit, means become ends and vice versa, and culture and education are centred on instruments, technique and efficiency alone. The precondition for peace is the dismantling of the dictatorship of relativism and of the supposition of a completely autonomous morality which precludes acknowledgment of the ineluctable natural moral law inscribed by God upon the conscience of every man and woman. Peace is the building up of coexistence in rational and moral terms, based on a foundation whose measure is not created by man, but rather by God. As Psalm 29 puts it: May the Lord give strength to his people; may the Lord bless his people with peace (v. 11).
