TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 11, 2011 Forgive your neighbor s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Sirach 28:2 FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you? Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. For us Americans on the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, forgiveness still does not come easily. Yet Jesus parable in today s Gospel reminds us of God s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way. The second collection this weekend is for Higher Utility and Energy Costs. PARISH COUNCIL BALLOTS Voting for new parish council members is continuing this weekend. REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 On Sunday, September 11 th we will commemorate the tragic event of Sept. 11, 2001. St. Joseph School students, faculty and parents will celebrate Mass at our Basilica at 9:30am. Following Mass we will gather in front of the school for a short program with Senator Richard Moore as the main speaker and invited guests. We will plant a memorial tree. All school children, parents and parishioners are invited to attend this patriotic event which will be permanently etched into the history of our country. CATHOLIC SCHOOL APPEAL Every year the Diocese of Worcester conducts their Fall Appeal for Catholic Schools. Parishes that operate schools retain the collection for their own use. Parishes that do not have schools, send the collections to the Diocesan General School Fund. This year, our parish designated the September School Appeal to cover the cost of the new reading series and handbooks for K through grade 5 students. This purchase was necessary to update the 10 year-old resources. This series of books, which was strongly recommended by the principal and faculty, costs $35,000 and the children already joyfully utilized them on the first day of school. This new series will accelerate the learning of the students and above all they are connected with the interactive smart boards. Some parishioners have already responded to this cause and I am grateful for their generosity, but I expect that those who have

I would appreciate it if our parishioners could pay for half of the bill and I will raise the balance outside of the parish. May I add that the final three Promethean boards have been ordered and have been paid by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Nowak. We are grateful for their continued benevolence and their caring for the future education of St. Joseph School students education. With these additions, I am proud to say that St. Joseph School is the very best equipped educational institution in the region. Considering the importance of this appeal, Bishop R. McManus will be mailing a letter to all parishioners with an enclosed envelope. If you choose to send the Diocesan envelope to the Worcester Diocese, please note your wish to designate your donation to Saint Joseph School. We suggest, however, that you use our Basilica envelope, which is included in your September packet. GREAT NEWS! With the permission of Bishop Robert McManus we will begin preparation of the grounds for the Gym and Parish Center. This includes cutting of trees, demolition of the house and preparing the grounds for construction. The excavating specifications were developed by our architectural company. Those who are interested in the bidding process may request specifications by calling the rectory. 60 th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY On Sunday, September 4 th we celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving for the 60 th Anniversary of the Sacrament of Matrimony of John and Rita Wolkowicz. They presently reside in Texas and were not able to be present, because of health issues, nevertheless they wanted a special Mass to be celebrated in the place where 60 years ago they began their happy marital journey. As they said, They experienced many of God s blessings especially in their three sons, John, Paul, David and grandaughter, Eliza. CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION The traditional outdoor candlelight procession in honor of Our Lady of Fatima will be held on Tuesday, September 13 th at 7:00pm. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN S CLUB The first monthly meeting of the new club year will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 13 th at 7pm in the school cafeteria. This session is for students and parents or sponsor. The following items are due at this time: 10 Gospel/Homily reflections, copy of baptism certificate and first Eucharist, sponsor certificates with parish stamp including SJB parish sponsors, letter of intent, confirmation questions answered and submitted. These are all necessary to continue in our confirmation process. HELP-Parishioner s your help is needed! Handing on our faith is the work of all Baptized Catholics. No experience is necessary. Is God calling you to help? Perhaps as a catechist, aide in the classroom, hospitality or office helper. Are you able to give 1 hour a month, 4? Or only 1x or 2x a year? Call the Religious Education Office for more information. RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a journey of conversion to God and what he intends for us. The RCIA is the process by which persons who were never baptized, or were baptized in another Christian tradition, or never received their First Communion or Confirmation and wish to learn more about the Catholic faith and become members of the Church. 11 September 2011-11 wrzesnia 2011.r Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner: The Knights of Columbus, on Saturday, September 17, 2011 will sponsor a take-out only Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner. The cost is a donation of your choice. Tickets are on sale this weekend, but will not be available next weekend (Sept. 17 th ). You must have a ticket to obtain a meal. The tickets are necessary, to insure that enough food is prepared. The dinners can be picked up in the school cafeteria from 4:30 to 5:30pm.
