May 17, 2015 Ascension Sunday Page Four Christ's ac on The Holy Mass is the holiest thing we have here on earth. Why? Because it is the ac on of Christ. The main thing in the Mass is not what is read from the Holy Scriptures, even though this is the word of God and should be listened to as such. The main thing in the Mass is not what the priest preaches in his sermon nor what the people do or sing. The main thing is what Christ does. And what does Christ do in the Holy Mass? He offers himself for us, as he offered himself on the Cross. He sacrifices himself for us. That is why we say that the Mass is the same Sacrifice as that of the Cross renewed in an unbloody manner on the altar. On the altar just on the Cross, Christ offers his body and blood for us. The difference is that on the Cross his body and blood were visible to the eyes of those who were present, while in the Mass they are hidden under the appearances of bread and wine. But they are really present. This is the great fact. In each Mass, Christ is really present and renews the Sacrifice of the Cross. The purposes of the Mass What else should you do, besides having a lot of faith, if you want to a end Holy Mass well? You should iden fy yourself with Christ. You should remember the Scriptures and have "the same mind" "that he had on the cross (cf. Phil 2:5). The same mind which means the same purposes. What purposes did Jesus have on the cross? What was he concerned about? We can sum up his ends or purposes as four: to give glory to God the Father; to thank him; to make up for the sins of men; and to ask him for graces for us. If each me you go to Mass, you try to live at least one of these purposes, you will a end Holy Mass well. The first purpose: adora on God is our Creator. He is the Lord of the whole world. We depend on him for everything. He is infinite, eternal, all-powerful. His infinite greatness and goodness ought to fill us with amazement and enthusiasm. When people get enthused about God, they want to praise him, they want to adore him. Jesus Christ, with his humanity, gave perfect glory to God the Father from the cross, and he con nues to do so from the altar. If you unite yourself to him, you will be offering a perfect sacrifice of adora on and praise. Pay special a en on to the Gloria and the Sanctus. The second purpose: to give thanks God is infinitely good. And all the good things we have, have come from him: life, family, sanc fying grace, faith, the sacraments, the gi of his Mother... And so many other natural and supernatural gi s. It is good to give thanks. The person who is too proud to say "Thank You" is not only ungrateful but is bound to end up being unhappy. Unite yourself to our Lord in the Mass, giving thanks, and you will see how you also become more op mis c as a result, because you will become more and more convinced of the goodness of God. The third purpose: to make up for our sins Jesus is perfect God and perfect Man. He is all-holy. Therefore he has not and could not have been guilty of any sin. But, as the Holy Scriptures says, he took our sins on himself and made up for them. He did penance for us by dying on the cross. If we want to take part properly in the Holy Mass, we must be sorry for our sins. The person who is not sorry for his sins will never understand or love the Mass, nor will he ever really take part in it. But the person who comes to Mass with real sorrow for his sins, will draw from it great strength to fight against tempta ons and to realize that, despite his weaknesses, God loves him very much. www.catholiceduca on.org

CONGRATULATIONS TO DEACON PAWEL BARWIKOWSKI On Saturday, May 9, 2015 Pawel Barwikowski was ordained Transi onal Deacon by Archbishop Blase Cupich at the Chapel of Immaculate Concep on at the University St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary. Deacon Pawel will be ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in May 2016. Chicago deacons will be assigned to the parish where they completed their internship. Deacon Pawel then will start his assignment at our parish on June 15th and con nue through the first semester of the next academic year, which is December 31. We are very happy to have Dcn. Pawel with us again. Please pray for him so the Holy Spirit can guide him as he discerns how to be er serve the Body of Christ. Arcybiskup Blase Cupich w katedrze Świętego Imienia w Chicago udzielił święceń prezbiteratu 14 diakonom Wyższego Seminarium Duchownego w Mundelein. Wśród nowo wyświęconych kapłanów jest ks. Piotr Samborski, który przez ostatnie lata wiernie pomagał w duszpasterstwie w naszej parafii oraz ks. Paweł Adamus, który od 1 lipca rozpoczyna swoją posługę duszpasterską jako wikariusz w parafii Ferdyanda. Św. Jan Paweł II tak określił posługę kapłańską: Kapłaństwo to tajemnica miłości i ofiary. Tajemnica miłości Boga do człowieka i tajemnica ofiarnego oddania się dziełu zbawiania ludzkości. Człowiek nie mógł otrzymać więcej nad to co otrzymał w Wielki Czwartek, kiedy Chrystus ustanowił sakramenty Eucharys i i kapłaństwa. Na słowo kapłana nasz Zbawiciel codziennie zstępuje na ołtarze świata, dając nam siebie jako Pokarm na życie wieczne. W tajemnicy miłości i ofiary kapłan staję się drugim Chrystusem. Nowo wyświęconym kapłanom życzymy by podążając drogą swego kapłańskiego powołania nieśli bliźnim Bożą Miłość, Niezachwianą Wiarę i Nadzieję. Niech Pan Bóg obdarzy Was zawsze swoim błogosławieństwem, a w sercach Waszych nawet w przeciwnościach niech rozkwita Boża Radość. Szcześć Boże! GRATULUJEMY DIAKONOWI PAWŁOWI BARWIKOWSKIEMU W sobotę, 9 maja kleryk Paweł Barwikowski przyjął święcenia diakonatu z rąk Arcybiskupa Chicago, Błażeja Cupich w kaplicy Wyższego Seminarium w Mundelein. Diakonat to pierwszy stopień sakramentu święceń, kolejny to święcenia prezbiteratu, które przyjmie w maju 2016r. Decyzją władz seminaryjnych, wyświęceni diakoni zostają odesłani na 6 miesięczny staż do parafii gdzie wcześniej odbywali już praktykę. Cieszymy się, że diakon Paweł ponownie przybędzie do naszej parafii pomagając w duszpasterstwie od 15 czerwca do 31 grudnia 2015r. Diakoni uczestniczą w specjalny sposób w posłaniu i łasce Chrystusa, (...) który stał się»diakonem«, to znaczy sługą wszystkich. Otaczając Go swoją modlitwą życzymy aby Duch Święty nieustannie Go przenikał, uzdalniał do uczynków miłości miłosiernej w Kościele, a Maryja Boża Rodzicielka otaczała Go swoim wstawiennictwem do Boga, aby w Jego sercacu Jezus był nieustannie obecny. Film ten mógł powstać dzięki staraniom Domu Pamięci Stefana Kardynała Wyszyńskiego, a więc również dzięki wsparciu Państwa. May 17, 2015 Ascension Sunday Page Thirteen My dearest Theophilus: So who are you, anyway? I do not ask this in an antagonis c way. On the contrary, I hold you as kindred spirit, for the Evangelist Luke addresses both his Gospel and his Acts of the Apostles to you, and any friend of Luke s is a friend of mine. I ve been reviewing the ancient texts, however, trying to understand you be er. I ve come to learn that Theophilus is a common Greek name meaning, God s friend. I like that. Some say that you are a local Jew--Theophilus of Alexandria, perhaps--who Luke befriended along the way. Some say that you are a Roman official, and if this is true, you must be a rather high-ranking one at that, given that Luke refers to you as most excellent in certain transla ons. Some even say that you are legal counsel to the Apostle Paul. Well, I come to you now for counsel myself. I do not need legal advice, though. I need advice about this week s column. Typically I write each week in connec on with the readings of the day. I find wri ng for May 17 problema c, however, for while it s the 7 th Sunday of Easter, it s also the Sunday immediately following the May 14 Ascension celebra on, and most dioceses now celebrate Ascension on this Sunday as well. But my column has a wide readership, most excellent Theophilus, so where should its focus be. I lean toward focusing on the Ascension, and perhaps this suits you, too, since Luke addresses you in the first Ascension reading. Whoever believes and is bap zed will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. S ll, I can t neglect the readings for the 7 th Sunday of Easter because of something Jesus says. Twice Theophilus, a priest once told me that when Jesus says something more than once, we should really, really pay a en on to it. Look, then, at the Gospel for the 7 th Sunday of Easter. We return here to the Last Supper, and Jesus is praying to the Father for his friends (and by extension, for all of us). I gave them your word, Jesus says, and the world hated them because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Jesus goes on to ask the Father to protect his friends from the evil one, then he repeats himself word-for-word: They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world! Do you see my dilemma now? How can I ignore this most excellent concept, namely, that we are not ci zens of earth with a heavenly connec on, but that we are ci zens of heaven with an earthly connec on? Men of Galilee, those two guys dressed in white say as Jesus disappears into the clouds, why are you standing there looking at the sky? Indeed. Jesus is merely going home a er all, and ul mately, this is our home, too. You know, Theophilus, there s probably no right or wrong answer about which readings to address. But perhaps like Luke, I feel be er for having talked things through with you. Thanks for listening. Please tell the Evangelist I say hello.
