May 9, 2010 Sixth Easter Sunday Page Four PRAYER FOR ALL MOTHERS Most Gracious Heavenly Father, We thank You for our mothers to whom You have entrusted the care of every precious human life from its very beginning in the womb. You have given to woman the capacity of participating with You in the creation of new life. Grant that every woman may come to understand the full meaning of that bless ing, which gives her an unlimited capacity for selfless love for every child she may be privileged to bear, and for all Your children. Watch over every mother who is with child, strengthen her faith in Your fatherly care and love for her and for her unborn baby. Give her courage in times of fear or pain, understanding in times of uncertainty and doubt, and hope in times of trouble. Grant her joy in the birth of her child. To mothers You have given the great privilege and responsibility of being a child's first teacher and spiritual guide. Grant that all mothers may worthily foster the faith of their children, following the example of Mary, Elizabeth, and other holy women who follow Christ. Help mothers to grow daily in knowledge and understanding of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and grant them the wisdom to impart this knowledge faithfully to their children, and to all who depend upon them. Assist all "spiritual mothers", those who, though they may have no children of their own, nevertheless selflessly care for the children of others of every age and state in life. Grant that they may know the joy of fulfilling this motherly calling of women, whether in teaching, nursing, religious life, or in other work which recognizes and fosters the true dignity of every human being created in Your image and likeness. We beseech You to send Your Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to all mothers who sorrow for children that have died, are ill or estranged from their families, or who are in trouble or danger of any kind. Help grieving mothers to rely on Your tender mercy and fatherly love for all your children. We ask your blessing on all those to whom You have entrusted motherhood. May Your Holy Spirit constantly inspire and strengthen them. May they ever follow the example of Mary, mother of Our Lord, and imitate her fidelity, her humility, and her self giving love. May all mothers receive Your Grace abundantly in this earthly life, and may they look forward to eternal joy in Your presence in the life to come. Amen.

May 9, 2010 Sixth Easter Sunday Page Six Dear Parishioners, We have some wonderful news! Thanks to your kindness and generosity, we were able to send a huge shipment to Jamaica for the Missionaries of the Poor. We would like to give you a detailed description of the items we collected so that you can see the magnitude of what we can accomplish together. The CD s that were sold after Mass each week created a $4, 078 contribution, the Mission collection basket at Mass each week gave a $3,064 contribution, The Missionaries of the Poor Tree of Hope collected $6,378, and private donations contributed $2,924. This brings the grand total of our Parish contribution to $16,444! The Brothers of the Missionaries of the Poor used all of these funds to purchase supplies for the massive container that we were able to send back to Jamaica. We were able to collect twenty skids of supplies! Which included eleven thousand pounds of rice, over two hundred cans of green beans, two hundred seventy-two bags of pasta, one hundred and thirty seven gallons of corn oil, two hundred eighty-seven cans of tuna, two hundred seventy-one boxes of bandages, one hundred seven bars of soap, one hundred thirty boxes of diapers, twenty five wheel chairs. These are just a few of the items that we were able to collect in bulk to send to Jamaica. The generosity and compassion that you have shown is immeasurable. Father Brian was amazed and truly grateful to everyone who donated items, came for the mission Masses, or who just offered their prayers. The container for the donations will be coming on Monday, May 10. We are anxious and excited to send this very important shipment to some very deserving people. We will be sure to keep all of you up to date on the progress we are making in Jamaica. The St. Ferdinand friends of the Missionaries of the Poor will be visiting Jamaica again this June. We will be sure to extend your prayers, thoughts, and support to our friends in Jamaica. Thank you again for all of your whole-hearted support on this very important mission. May 9, 2010 Sixth Easter Sunday Page Eight MORE THAN A MOTHER When God set the world in place, when He hung the stars up in space, when He made the land and the sea, then He made you and me. He sat back and saw all that was good, He saw things to be as they should. Just one more blessing He had in store; He created a mother, but whatever for? He knew a mother would have a special place to shine His reflection on her child's face. A mother will walk the extra mile just to see her children smile. She'll work her fingers to the bone to make a house into a home. A mother is there to teach and guide, a mother will stay right by your side. She'll be there through your pain and strife, she'll stay constant in your life. A mother will lend a helping hand until you have the strength to stand. She'll pick you up when you are down, when you need a friend she'll stick around. A mother is one who listens well, will keep her word; will never tell. A mother never pokes or pries but stands quietly by your side, giving you the strength you need, encouraging you to succeed. A mother is one who can be strong when you need someone to lean on. You're more than a mother to me; a reflection of Him in your face I see, a love that knows no boundaries. I'm glad that you chose to be all this and more to me. You share a love that knows no end, you're more than my mother, you are my friend. ~By Kari Keshmiry~ THE WEEK AT ST. May 9, 2010 Sixth Easter Sunday Page Thirteen ON VITRIOL PUSHING 2:00 AM, AND MOTHER S DAY 2010 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) Last October, I did something I d never done before: I took part in a prayer vigil outside a facility that provides abortions. Rich, a friend from the parish and a past president of our Holy Name Society, said that he d be going to the local clinic at 1:00 AM for one hour on an upcoming Sunday in support of the national Forty Days for Life movement, and he asked if anyone wanted to go along. First I said no, but the no nagged at me. For one thing, I didn t think Rich had found any other takers and it didn t seem right to send him solo. For two things, I put myself--albeit quietly--on the pro-life side of the abortion debate. Was it my time to speak up by showing up? Come the night, I called Rich to tell him that I d be joining him, and he seemed glad for the news. We arrived at the clinic on time, and the people we were relieving were definitely glad for the news. With us being there, they got to go home, after all, while we had an hour ahead of us on a chilly night with drizzle off and on. Rich and I chatted briefly about the Forty Days movement. He stressed that prayer for the conversion of hearts of the pro-abortion set was elemental to the cause. Especially, I figured, when those hearts were beating in the chests of women intending very soon to abort their own sons or daughters. I told Rich I didn t know anyone touched by abortion. He said I might but just didn t realize it. We kept to our own thoughts for a while, and then at 1:30 or so, we prayed the rosary together, hoping that all those Hail Mary s would find their way home. Shortly after we d finished, two young women in a van drove by, and as I told Rich later, I had not in my entire life been the object of such a vitriolic outburst. The women--i put them in their early twenties--were screaming obscenities at us for doing what we were doing, for (apparently) just being there. Call me naïve, but I never thought that two guys sitting alone and praying in the dampness at nearly 2:00 AM could generate so much hatred in the heart, in the mind, and on the lips of anybody, regardless of the issue at hand. I cannot recall all of their explosive language, but Get a life! (expletives deleted) still rings in my ears. I was stunned at the unprovoked attack--not to mention a little frightened--and I was very glad that neither of us was there alone. Before the night was through, I told Rich that I already had my Mother s Day column nailed down, and over five months later, here it is. The women didn t return, but by 2:00 AM, our relief showed up: a young mom and her husband. She said that someone--a family member, I think--was home watching her children so that she could come out for an hour. She thanked us for being there, for joining in the celebration of life that was at the heart of the Forty Days movement. The contrast between the young women in the van and the young woman settling in for her one-hour vigil was profound. Get a life! the former screamed at Rich and me. Essentially, it was our very prayer that night, and today especially, the irony almost brings me to tears. Happy Mother s Day.
