Page Four Nineteenth Ordinary Sunday August 10, 2008 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time WHAT S WHAT Today s passage from Matthew s Gospel is loaded with many symbols and details. Our familiarity with the tale of the calming of the sea and Peter s rescue may lull us into overlooking them, or we may simply be unfamiliar with their meaning. Here are things to note: Jesus makes the disciples get into the boat, so there is distance between him and them; the boat, in the Gospels, is always a code word for the church; Jesus goes up a mountain to pray, the place of closeness to God (also the place, in Matthew s Gospel, where Jesus teaches the Beatitudes); the wind and stormy seas can be conquered only by God, as chaos was conquered at creation; Jesus, in prayer to God, is able to know the trouble of his followers, his church, in the boat, even though he is separated from them by a great distance. Matthew packs all these details and symbols into a handful of sentences, yet they are all vital to our understanding of this passage and more importantly for our own growth in faith as a church. WHO S WHO Throughout the Gospels and all of the New Testament, Peter stands as an emblem for the whole church. He is a mixture of faith and fearfulness, expresses profound belief in yet also cruel denial of Christ. Peter is the saint and the sinner that every baptized member of the church is. Today he leaps forward in exuberant faith, but caves in to the tempest tossing him about. He musters enough faith to cry out his need for salvation, as we all must. And then Christ, who called him through the storm, identifies himself by saying (literally, in the Greek text), I Am as God was revealed to Moses. Christ, divinely unfazed by the petty storms that terrify his church, always stands ready to reach out to those he has called when they cry for help. Lord, save me! was on Peter s lips that morning, as it has been on the lips of countless Christians throughout the centuries. And Christ still reaches out to us, his church being tossed about, to take us by the hand and reply, Do not be afraid (Matthew 14:27). But I know (because he told me) that he liked Gordon Lightfoot. Accordingly, a Lightfoot collection was one of only two albums--the other being an Anne Murray set--that I ever gifted him with, and these are the only albums I can remember ever finding on the turntable whenever I came home to visit. Dad especially liked The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Perhaps because of my father s time in the Navy, Lightfoot s haunting melody touched him in some way. It touches me, too; it s the song that keeps me in the car, singing, even after I ve arrived at my destination... The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down, of the big lake they call Gitchigumi/ The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy/ With a load of iron ore, 26,000 tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty/ That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed when the gales of November came early Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms when they left, fully loaded for Cleveland/ And later that night when the ship's bell rang, could it be the north wind they'd been feeling?/ The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound, and a wave tumbled over the railing/ And every man knew, as the captain did, too, 'twas the Witch of November come stealing I am reminded of the song as I consider today s Gospel reading, Matthew s account of the storm at sea. Jesus directs his disciples to precede him to the other side of the water while he remains behind to dismiss the crowds and to pray. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by waves, for the wind was against it. I ve never been at sea in really bad weather, but I ve seen The Perfect Storm, and in some fashion, this is where Peter and the rest find themselves, being tossed around like so much driftwood. That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed when the gales of November came early, whether it was November or not. My mom used to keep a little holy card on the kitchen counter. I can t recall the exact text but here s the gist of it: Help me, Oh Lord, for the sea is so big and my boat is so small. This--or something similar--was probably the prayer of each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. It was probably, too, the prayer of each disciple when they saw Jesus walking toward them on the water. They thought they were seeing a ghost. They were seeing instead the answer to their pleas, and I again ponder Lightfoot s hit: Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours? Like Peter, we may not grasp it at the time because our faith is weak, but surely for the twenty-nine crewmembers of the Edmund Fitzgerald, for the disciples at sea that night, and for all of us when the waves come crashing in, this is precisely when the love of God surrounds us most, carrying us through the storm.
