Page Four Second Sunday of Easter April 27, 2003 In Loving Memory of Mr. Ray Carco Physical Education Teacher at St. Ferdinand, 1995-2003 Born April 18, 1947 - Died April 12, 2003 Mr. Carco had given much service to many students throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago, teaching since 1972. He taught them skills and sportsmanship, team work and quest for individual excellence, perseverance and enjoyment of the game. Mr. Carco served in the following schools prior to coming to St. Ferdinand: St. Mary in Buffalo Grove, Immaculate Conception on Talcott, St. Stephen in Des Plaines, St. Giles in Oak Park, St. Mary of Celle, Our Lady of Fatima, and St. Symphrosa. During a prayer service on April 14 for Mr. Carco, the students had an opportunity to speak of memories they had of Mr. Carco: his laughter, his silly jokes, his reminding them that they are okay, his helping them do a summersault, his encouraging them to dribble a basketball, his love of dodge ball. During the mass on April 16, the students brought up symbols that reminded them of Mr. Carco: a basketball because he taught them how to make a basket; the story book he loved, The Gym Teacher from the Black Lagoon; the whistle he wore around his neck; an umpire's hat because he refereed their games; 2 coffee cups because he loved his java; a March calendar page because of the March Madness tournament he had in school; gym sweatshirts because they all wore these when they had class with Mr. Carco; a stop sign because Mr. Carco was at Mason and Barry protecting the kids through all kinds of cold and wet weather; a book of memories - many of which we carry in our hearts. Mr. Carco was the loving father of his son, Christopher, whom he adored, and the devoted son of his mother Felicia. Many cousins and friends also are suffering from this great loss. His colleagues and friends at St. Ferdinand are still in disbelief at the suddenness and unexpectedness of this death and turn to their faith for understanding and consolation. We will miss him. Please remember Mr. Carco and his family in your prayers. Please remember the faculty, staff, and students in your prayers. Thank you. "When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us." - Helen Keller - The Chaplet of Divine Mercy Using normal rosary beads, begin with: Our Father..., Hail Mary..., The Creed. On the five large beads: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. On the ten small beads: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion have mercy on us and on the whole world. At the end of the Chaplet say three times: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. April 27, 2003 Second Sunday of Easter Page Nine At Sunday Mass the first reading usually comes from the Old Testament. This custom changes, however, during the Easter season. For seven weeks from Easter Sunday until Pentecost, the first readings all come from the same book: the Acts of the Apostles. Thus the three readings at Sunday Mass and the two readings at daily Mass all come from the New Testament throughout the Easter season. Easter makes everything new. The resurrection so changes human history that we immerse ourselves in the New Testament to seek more deeply the meaning of this mystery. The Acts of the Apostles tells of the beginnings of the church. It opens with the ascension and Pentecost, recounts the spread of the faith in peace and persecution, and concludes with the missionary activity of Paul. This book bridges the Gospels with the rest of church history. The Gospels culminate in the resurrection of Jesus, which inspired evangelization. Each Easter our church announces the resurrection through the Scriptures and increases its membership through baptism. We witness evangelization today as we recall its origins in the Acts of the Apostles. The Old Testament is not completely absent. The Liturgy of the Word throughout the season still includes a Support Staff Mrs. Aneta Koæma, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L. Braunsdorf, Communications Coordinator Mrs. Lu Caravette, Sr. Gracjana Ziêba, Receptionist/Secretary Ricky Salgado, Daniel Lopez, Jason Felix, Evening Receptionists Liturgical: Mr. Andrew Warzocha, Director of Music and Liturgy Mrs. Betty Hotcaveg, Lector Coordinator Deacon Irv Hotcaveg, Coordinator of Eucharistic Ministers & Ministers of Care Ms. Jane Lohrmann, Scheduler of Ministers of Care to the Homebound Parish Council Ralph Barnhart - President, Mary Bucaro, Terri Calcitrai, Sophie Kass, Ken Presslak, Andrew Warzocha. Rev. David J. Cortesi and Daniel P. Costigan, ex officio. Easter First Readings Paul Turner St. Ferdinand Parish responsorial psalm. The Mass for the Pentecost Vigil includes a reading from the Old Testament, forshadowing the gift of the Spirit. When planning other liturgies for the Easter season funerals, weddings, or baptisms, for example the first readings best come from the New Testament. No matter the occasion, our Scripture readings set this season aside from all others because it ranks above all others. Easter announces new life in Christ.
