Stewardship Note: We must be good stewards of God s gifts to us, receiving them gratefully and cultivating them with care, lest we be the ones about whom John the Baptist speaks today, cautioning us, Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. See Matthew 3:10 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 5, 2010 The earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord, as water covers the sea. Isaiah 11:9 The Long-Awaited One. As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to his historical birth. Today s scriptures blend the two. Isaiah s disillusionment with the kings of his own day led him to envision an ideal king who would rule with divine approval and be led by divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipated the arrival of that Messiah, who would usher in a blessed age when the whole world would finally dwell in justice and peace. After centuries of such growing expectation, the preaching of John the Baptist about the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not help but provoke intense interest. The Baptist s message about preparation for the one who is coming (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all the prophets. This weekend the second collection is taken for Diocesan Obligations Next weekend the second collection will be taken for Utility and Energy Costs BLESSING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE We welcome to the 4 p.m. Mass the parents and children of St. Joseph School for the monthly family Mass. The procession with students carrying lights through the darkened church to the altar is very meaningful and inspirational during this Advent season. The following new members will be accepted into the Children of Mary society: Jessica Gardner, Ann Marie Taylor and Rachael Taylor. The officers include: President Alyssa Bronzo, Vice-President Megan Scully, Secretary Joanna Stachowicz, and Treasurer Kate Drabato. Following the Mass the student choir, parishioners and students are invited to gather on the church lawn for the blessing and lighting of the Christmas tree. After a brief program the children are invited to the school cafeteria for hot chocolate and cookies. DIVINE MERCY DEVOTIONS This Sunday at 3 p.m. we will sing the chaplet to the Divine Mercy followed by benediction. This is an occasion for us to pray for good health, for the grace to be merciful toward others, for our country, and for special intentions. Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Justice and Obedience. Justice is the insurance we have on our lives, and obedience is the premium we pay for it.
Page 3 December 5, 2010-5 grudzien 2010 r. SHARING OUR BLESSINGS Thank You! We are pleased to announce that the regular offertory to our parish was sustained during the second week following the Sharing our Blessings Commitment Weekend. We have realized a 14% increase in our offertory over the same period last year. We still have a long way to go to reach the average 25% increase other parishes achieved, but still many people have not returned their commitment. Thank you so much to all that have participated and to all who have increased their giving. If you have not already made your commitment, Commitment Envelopes are available in the back of the church. FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION December 8 th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of our country. It is a day of obligation and I kindly ask you to refer to the bulletin for the schedule of Masses. Hail Mary, full of Grace! Like Mary, we are not saved through our own merits but through the merits won by Christ on the Cross. As the mother of Jesus Christ, our Savior, she was abundantly graced by God and it is so fitting to venerate her, especially in this Advent season, asking God s blessing through her intercession. RECONCILIATION SERVICE The Advent season is associated with preparation for Christmas by receiving the Sacrament of Penance, traditionally known as confessions. On Monday, December 20, at 6 p.m. a Reconciliation Service will be held in our Basilica with several visiting priests to assist for your convenience. Please note this date on your calendar. ANGEL GIVING TREE We kindly ask you to include among your charitable works in this Advent season the needs of our local community. You will notice that there is a Giving Tree near the sanctuary stairs in our Basilica as well as one at the front entrance near the choir stairs. We encourage you to take an angel and make it part of your Christmas giving. By providing assistance to the children and the elderly you are becoming an angel of wisdom, education, and charity to brighten the season of Christmas for those in need. There is a great need for tuition assistance for families who want their children to attend St. Joseph School but are having a difficult time meeting expenses in these hard economic times. There is a great need to continue the tradition of last year and establish a scholarship for those children whose parents cannot afford a Catholic education. Please place the angel on your gift and if it is a monetary gift please bring it to the sacristy or to the rectory. We also have many parishioners in nursing homes or who are home-bound. A little Christmas remembrance would bring a little happiness in their lives. RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS All parishes in the diocese will be taking the annual offering to support The Retirement Fund for the Religious this month. This collection will be taken in our parish on the weekend of December 20/21. Bishop McManus writes as we reflect on the role that religious have played in the Church, we are reminded of the myriad ways these dedicated women and men serve as bridges of faith. Through their service in Catholic schools and parishes, religious offer a bridge to both academic knowledge and faith formation.... Religious men and women have heeded the call of the Lord by their witness to Gospel values and their commitment to serve those around them... The Retirement Fund supports these men and women who continue to shape the lives and the faith of millions of Americans...Please be generous in this appeal. It represents an opportunity to bring together our diocesan family in support of those who have served the Church as well as our local communities. I ask you to bless our religious with your gift. FROM THE OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RCIA. We were unable to celebrate the RCIA Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming last week, however, it will take place this Sunday, December 5 th at the 9:30 liturgy. We ask our parishioners to help and support all of these people seeking to follow Christ by welcoming them, praying for them, and reaching out to them as fellow members of the Household of Christ. Please welcome Jennifer Aoude, Shannon Quezada and Cynthia Hunt. Retreat for Religious Education Classes Grades 9, 10 and Confirmation Class will be held on Saturday, December 11 th in the school from 8:30-2:30 p.m. This is a requirement for our program. The retreat theme is Seeking Justice. Please be prompt. DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS Congratulations to our parishioners who are celebrating their nineties birthday this December: Walter Alisch, Antionette Bembenek, Exilda Mathieu, Edward Mrzyglod, Peter Omilnowicz, and John Przybylek. December birthdays are special because they come in the season of expectation, the season of joy, and the birthday of Jesus Christ. On your birthday we wish you much pleasure and joy, we hope all of your wishes come true. May each hour and minute be filled with delight, and your birthday be perfect for you! CASH CALENDARS The cash calendars for the month of January are now on sale! Just in time for the perfect Christmas gift, birthday gift or special remembrance! In addition, the income from the cash calendar will be directed toward paying the diocesan obligations. This is the best investment of $10 that you can make because you can win money every day on a daily basis (from $50 to grand prize of $500) and at the same time help the church. Look for your sellers at the entrances to the church Dottie Kasierski and Pat Parslow after the Masses this weekend or contact your favorite sellers. The success of this campaign depends on those who patronize the calendar and on the dedicated sellers. If you want to join the group of promoters please contact Terry Miller. Although this program presents a lot of work for volunteers, it is one of the more successful fund raisers.
