Co to jest? The question Kto to jest? (Who is this?) isusedwhenaskingaboutaperson. The question Kto? refers to the subject. However, when asking for some additional information about a person, e.g. his/her nationality, job or position, the instrumental case and phrase Kim jest X? (Who is X?)isused. Aperson snameisoftenreplacedwithapronoun,e.g.: Kim on/ona jest? Who is he/she? On jest in ynierem. He s an engineer. Ona jest asystentk¹. She s an assistant. Masculine and feminine nouns We can distinguish between masculine and feminine forms of nouns. Usually, masculine nouns end with a consonant (dyrektor, asystent, pan) and feminine nouns end with a vowel, almost always an a (asystentka) and very occasionally with an -i (pani). Exceptions are some masculine forms ending with an a, e.g.:kolega, poeta, mê czyzna (colleague, poet, man). The nominative and instrumental cases In Polish, the nominative case is reserved for the subject of a sentence. Nouns with other functions are used in different cases. The verb connected with a noun has to be used in an appropriate case.

15 In the instrumental case, masculine nouns have the ending -em (On jest in ynierem/polakiem.) and feminine nouns the ending -¹ (Ona jest Francuzk¹/asystenk¹.). In the case of professional titles, we add noun pani, e.g.pani dyrektor, pani prezes, pani premier.

These are general questions related to the whole sentence which are used when we want to receive a positive or negative reply: Czy Maria jest asystentk¹? Tak, ona jest asystentk¹. Is Maria an assistant? Yes, she is an assistant. Czy Kasia jest asystentk¹? Nie, Kasia nie jest asystentk¹. Onajest studentk¹. Is Kasia an assistant? No, she is not an assistant. She is a student. In a negative sentence, we repeat the word nie before the verb, e.g. Nie, ona nie jest studentk¹.
