Dear Parishioners and Friends, 4 Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele, A man named Adam Chmielowski, an ar st from Cracow once visited the poor with his friends, who were bored of carnival fes vi es. They went to a homeless shelter called "ogrzewalnia" which roughly translates to a "warming center". That night the man known as Adam Chmielowski "died", and a new man known as brother Albert was born. Brother Albert devoted the rest of his life to help the poor and suffering. Suffering is a threat to the deepest layers of the human spirit. Physical pain causes suffering to the human soul. Bodily deformi es also have the power to cripple our core. Grave suffering can destroy hope and faith, and undermine the meaning of our existence. As a priest I o en see this par cular reason for the loss of faith: suffering that is not resolved. Today's Gospel (Mk. 1: -29-39) touches upon the problem of human suffering, and associates it with the image of "evil spirits", which are only a small por on of the essence of suffering. Evil sooner or later, in one way or another is always the cause of suffering. What is the answer Jesus gave to this nagging ques on? We will not find it in the Gospel. Even the words: "Whoever wishes to come a er me, let him take up his cross and follow me" (Mt 16, 24) is not an explana on of the causes of suffering, but an expression of the a tude Jesus had towards it, which is the essence of the Gospel: a struggle with suffering. From a baby crying in Bethlehem, to the cry from the cross "My God, why have you forsaken me". Jesus stood between the eternal struggle of good against evil. Evil has many faces: moral evil known as sin, physical evil called suffering, biological evil called pain and spiritual evil known as despair. Good must wrestle with this mul tude of evil. This is what Jesus did as well. His portrait depicted in the pages of the Gospel is a picture of a man that is infinitely good. "Evil spirits... knew who he is". They knew their greatest enemy. Because good was in his whole being. Therefore, a Chris an who is confronted with the problem of suffering can not ignore the figure of Jesus. Without Him, without His death and resurrec on, we can not solve this drama c problem. The Gospel of mercy towards those suffering has not to this day reached everywhere. S ll, whole areas of human existence are "removed" from the blessed influence of Jesus and his Gospel. Looking at the whole expanse of the con nents afflicted by hunger and extreme poverty, the hos lity to people affected by certain diseases or the millions of drug addicts who are made by some and despised by others. Looking at Chris ans persecuted and murdered by Muslims, or taking into account the rights of children, especially those that are unborn. Let us ask God for mercy for all those who suffer and repentance for those who knowingly bring suffering to others. God bless you! Kiedyś złożył wizytę ludziom cierpiącym Adam Chmielowski. Tej nocy umarł Adam Chmielowski, a narodził się nowy człowiek brat Albert, który poświęcił resztę swego życia dla cierpiących. Cierpienie jest zagrożeniem najgłębszych warstw ludzkiej istoty. Ból fizyczny powoduje cierpienie ducha. Cielesne kalectwo potrafi okaleczyć także duszę. Nazbyt wielkie cierpienie może unicestwić nadzieję, odebrać wiarę, zniweczyć poczucie jakiegokolwiek sensu istnienia. Jako ksiądz nieraz spotykałem się z tym właśnie powodem utraty wiary: nie rozwiązany problem cierpienia. Dzisiejszy fragment Ewangelii (Mk. 1:-29-39) dotykając problemu ludzkiego cierpienia, wiąże je z tajemniczą postacią złych duchów. Jest to zaledwie cząstka odpowiedzi na pytanie o cierpienie. Zło moralne prędzej czy później, w ten czy inny sposób rodzi cierpienie. To tylko cząstka odpowiedzi. Jaką dał odpowiedź Jezus na nękające pytanie? Nie znajdziemy w Ewangelii prób teoretycznego rozwiązywania problemu cierpienia. Nawet słowa: Kto chce iść za mną, niech weźmie swój krzyż i niech mnie naśladuje (Mt 16, 24) nie są wyjaśnieniem przyczyn cierpienia, lecz wyrazem postawy samego Jezusa wobec cierpienia. Bo tym jest Ewangelia: zmaganiem się z cierpieniem. Od płaczu Niemowlęcia w Betlejem, po wołanie z krzyża Boże mój, czemuś mnie opuścił. Jezus staje pośrodku odwiecznej walki zła przeciw dobru. Zło ma wiele twarzy: zło moralne zwane grzechem, zło fizyczne zwane cierpieniem, zło biologiczne zwane bólem, zło psychiczne zwane zmartwieniem, zło duchowe zwane rozpaczą. Z tym wielorakim, wielogłowym złem zmagać się musi dobro. To właśnie czynił Jezus. Jego portret odmalowany na kartach Ewangelii to obraz człowieka bezgranicznie dobrego. Złe duchy... wiedziały, kim On jest. Wiedziały, że to ich największy wróg. Bo dobro było w Nim wszystkim. Dlatego chrześcijanin, gdy staje wobec problemu cierpienia nie może pominąć postaci Jezusa. Bez Niego, bez Jego śmierci i zmartwychwstania, nie sposób rozwiązać ten dramatyczny problem. Ewangelia miłosierdzia wobec cierpiących jeszcze nie wszędzie dotarła. Dziś także całe obszary ludzkiej egzystencji są wyjęte spod błogosławionego wpływu Jezusa i jego Ewangelii. Czy to popatrzeć na całe połacie kontynentów dotkniętych głodem i skrajną biedą. Czy to popatrzeć na wrogość wobec ludzi dotkniętych niektórymi szczególnymi chorobami. Czy popatrzeć na milionowe rzesze narkomanów, których takimi uczynili jedni a pogardzają drudzy. Czy popatrzeć na chrześcijan uprowadzanych i mordowanych przez muzułmanów. Czy popatrzeć na nie brane pod uwagę prawa dzieci, szczególnie nienarodzonych. Prośmy Boga o miłosierdzie dla wszystkich cierpiących i opamiętanie dla tych, którzy świadomie sprowadzają cierpienia na innych. Szczęść Boże!

The benchmarking process helps a parish to establish a strong financial founda on so that its mission and vision can be successful. Helpful tools are provided by which a parish reviews in detail its financial and material resources, personnel, budget, facili es, etc. in light of what we have learned to be best prac ces in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Issues surrounding personnel, schools, and facili es are addressed in view of strategizing for the future well-being of the parish. The ul mate goal of the Parish Transforma on process is to learn new ways of looking at parish life, to adopt new pastoral and fiscal prac ces where it is advantageous, and to ini ate an ongoing review and refinement of the mission and vision of the parish at regular intervals. 7 FEBRUARY 11 WORLD DAY OF THE SICK Memorial of Our Lady of the Lourdes February 11 is World Day of the Sick, an observa on introduced by Pope John Paul II as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. The day coincides with the commemora on of Our Lady of Lourdes and is an important opportunity for those who serve in Catholic health ministry to reflect on caring for those who are sick as well as those who provide care to them. Pope Francis has issued a powerful message for the World Day of the Sick, which takes place on February 11th. The Pope thanked those who care for the sick, adding that me spent with the ill, is sacred. He also calls for Catholics to embrace wisdom of the heart. "Occasionally our world forgets the special value of me spent at the bedside of the sick, since we are in such a rush; caught up as we are in a frenzy of doing, of producing, we forget about giving ourselves freely, taking care of others, being responsible for others, writes the Pope. This year, the Holy Father's Message is en tled: "I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame" (Job 29.15). In his Message, Pope Francis invites the ill, as well as the professionals and volunteers in the field of the health care, to reflect on the wisdom of the heart. "This 'wisdom' is not theore cal, abstract knowledge, the product of reasoning. Rather, it is, as Saint James describes it in his Le er, 'pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty. Become a star or an ambassador! ON RUNNING CONVERSATIONS, OLD POEMS, AND GOD TIME copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) Years ago, I used to run once a week with the pastor of my home parish. Then Fr. Tom got promoted to bishop and took up residency in Cicero, IL, and while we s ll got together occasionally to put some miles in, the frequency dropped way, way off. And now that he s in Springfield, IL, I see him even less, and we haven t had the chance to run together for a long me. Too bad. I miss those runs, and not strictly for the training discipline that having a running partner brings you. I miss the conversa- on. You run shoulder-to-shoulder with somebody for five, six, seven miles and you get to cha ng. I remember waving to our school principal one Monday morning as she was ge ng to work early and we were finishing up a run, and the next me I saw her for a board mee ng, she threw a ques on at me that made me smile (and that I ve never forgo en): What do you guys talk about? she asked. We talked about family and training and upcoming races and health concerns and God. And lots of other things, too. Not unlike the conversa on I had the other day with another running partner of mine. Mirek and I met at 7:00 AM on a recent Saturday to go about six, and though we hadn t run together for two weeks, the conversa- on picked up where it le off. It always does. We spoke about my recent trip to Florida and my upcoming blood dona on. We spoke about an ultra marathon he s thinking about doing and whether I d be willing to join him for ten miles of it. We spoke about a live chicken I gave him several months ago now (long story ) and how the bird just laid its first egg. We spoke also of prayer, and how easy it is to give God a backseat as we get caught up in the affairs of this world. I recalled a line in a poem I wrote to my wife probably thirty years ago now ( God first, and then you ) and told Mirek that some mes I feel like I fail on both counts. I think of these running conversa ons--and that decades-old poem --as I consider today s readings. Poor Job. Is not man s life on earth a drudgery? he observes. And, My days are swi er than a weaver s shu le; they come to an end without hope. We work, work, work, but to what end? This is Ecclesiastes all over again. This is the same no on that inspired Thoreau to write that most men lead lives of quiet despera on. Where does God fit into the conversa on when we re too busy with making enough coin to take care of our families? And then, how much do we need? And can we ever have enough, with unforeseen medical bills and other major expenses possibly wai ng for us around the corner? More ques ons than answers. What do you guys talk about? the principal asked me. 11 ŚWIATOWY DZIEŃ CHOREGO 11 luty Ustanowione przez papieża Jana Pawła II w dniu 13 maja 1992 roku w 75 rocznicę objawień fa mskich. Celem obchodów jest objęcie modlitwą wszystkich cierpiących, zarówno duchowo, jak i fizycznie, i zwrócenie uwagi świata na ich potrzeby. 11 lutego w 1894 roku papież napisał list apostolski Salvifici Doloris o chrześcijańskim sensie ludzkiego cierpienia, które jego zdaniem jest częścią tożsamości człowieka, która wzywa go do tego, by przerósł samego siebie. Tym samym dojrzewa duchowo i odnajduje zbawczy sens cierpienia, wyrażający się w dwóch imperatywach: Czyń dobro cierpieniem i Czyń dobro cierpiącym. Kościół zachęca tym samym do wolontariatu, który od setek lat pomaga chorym i potrzebującym na całym świecie niezależnie od wyznania, poglądów politycznych i statusu społecznego. Pomocy cierpiącym jako drodze uświęcenia pisze papież Franciszek a jego hasłem są słowa z Księgi Hioba: "Niewidomemu byłem oczami, chromemu służyłem za nogi". Papież zwraca uwagę na konieczność mądrości serca, która nie jest abstrakcyjnym owocem teoretycznego rozumowania. To inspirowane przez Ducha Świętego otwarcie się na cierpienia braci i rozpoznanie w nich obrazu Boga. Mądrość serca oznacza służenie braciom - ubogim, którzy potrzebują pomocy, wdowom, sierotom. - Niech chrześcijanie także dzisiaj dają świadectwo - nie słowami, lecz życiem zakorzenionym w autentycznej wierze - tego, że są "oczami niewidomego" i "nogami chromego"! Rodzice są zobowiązani do wzięcia udziału w spotkaniu przygotowującym do tego sakramentu przed planowaną datą chrztu dziecka. Prosimy o skontaktowanie się z biurem parafialnym, aby zgłosić dziecko do chrztu. Sakrament Małżeństwa Archidiecezja Chicago zaleca, aby osoby, które planują zawarcie sakramentu małżeństwa zgłosiły się do biura parafialnego co najmniej cztery miesiące przed datą ślubu.
