SAINT FABIAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Our Mission is to be a Reflective and Active Presence of Jesus Christ in the Community. We are called by God as the Baptized Community of Saint Fabian to Embody the Risen Christ we Experience as Savior, Teacher, Healer, Peacemaker, Compassionate Lover Embracer of all Cultures and Ages, Celebrator, Comforter, Servant, Host, Entrance and Guide United in faith as Daughters and Sons, we live and celebrate God s Presence

PAGE 2 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 22, 2016 Tertullian, an important early Christian theologian, was the first to use the word Trinity to describe God. This was around the year 200 A.D. The Council of Nicaea adopted this term 125 years later in formulating the Creed we proclaim at Sunday Mass. (Sometimes we pray the shorter Apostles Creed. The choice is left to the one presiding at Mass.) It took a very long time for the Church Fathers and theologians to clarify this doctrine of the Trinity. There were many reasons that it took such a long time. Among the primary reasons would be that belief in one God was so deeply embedded in the Jewish faith, the faith that gave birth to Christianity, and because three persons in one God was such an entirely new and difficult concept to accept. As far back in history as we know, humans have believed in divine beings whom they considered to be either friendly or hostile to us humans. Forms of worship developed to please those divine beings who were friendly or to protect oneself from those who were unfriendly. Some cultures had hundreds of such divine beings. Can you imagine having to be concerned about each one of these powerful gods without getting on the wrong side of any one of them? Polytheism, belief in many gods, was practiced everywhere. Abraham, the father of our faith, and his descendants were an exception to this. Abraham may have acknowledged that there were many other gods in many other places, such as Egypt or Babylon, but for him, there was only one God that mattered, one God that he worshipped. There is a little story which comes from Jewish and Islamic literature about how Abraham helped to change the practice of many nations from polytheism to monotheism, the belief in one God. When Abraham was young, and while he was still known as Abram, he lived with his parents in Ur, an area in southern Iraq. His father made his living by making statues of the gods people worshipped in that area, and there were lots of gods. Archeologists tell us that there were over 700 of these gods, so it would seem that Abraham s father had a good business going. One day his father had to go on a business trip and he left Abraham in charge of the shop. Abraham felt disgusted with all these statues of gods and goddesses and broke them all except for one he left standing in the corner of the shop. When his father came home and saw that all his statues were destroyed, he blamed Abraham and scolded him for it. Abraham denied doing it. He pointed to the god standing in the corner and said, He did it. We could talk about the mystery of the Trinity forever and never fully understand it. We have to take this teaching on faith, a faith which has Jesus Christ for its foundation. It is from Jesus that we have learned of the Father and the Holy Spirit and it is from him that we have learned that he and the Father are one. It is by the command of Jesus that we be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. So do not be surprised or upset that we cannot understand this mystery. God is God and we are not. Someday we will see for ourselves what this mystery is all about. That is what faith is all about.

PAGE 3 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 22, 2016 READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND FIRST READING: PROVERBS 8:22-31 and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, Thus says the wisdom of God: because the love of God has been poured out into our "The LORD possessed me, the beginning of his ways, hearts the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago; through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. from of old I was poured forth, at the first, before the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, GOSPEL: JOHN 16:12-15 when there were no fountains or springs of water; before the mountains were settled into place, Jesus said to his disciples: before the hills, I was brought forth; "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it while as yet the earth and fields were not made, now. nor the first clods of the world. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. "When the Lord established the heavens I was there, He will not speak on his own, when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep; but he will speak what he hears, when he made firm the skies above, and will declare to you the things that are coming. when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth; He will glorify me, when he set for the sea its limit, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to so that the waters should not transgress his command; you. then was I beside him as his craftsman, Everything that the Father has is mine; and I was his delight day by day, for this reason I told you that he will take from what is playing before him all the while, mine playing on the surface of his earth; and declare it to you." and I found delight in the human race." SECOND READING: ROMANS 5:1-5 Brothers and sisters: Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character,

The Transformation Committee s goal is to embrace the richness of our multi-cultural faith community. We strive to embrace and celebrate our commonality and diversity. To help achieve this goal, caring parishioners willing to share their ideas and/or talents are welcome to join the committee as we strive to achieve this goal. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Around the turn of the fourth century, Augustine, still fairly fresh from the baptismal waters in Milan, was elected bishop of a tiny city in North Africa, Hippo. He told his people, While I am frightened by what I am for you, then I am consoled by what I am with you. For you I am a bishop, with you I am a Christian. He had his priorities right, and also knew that everyone coming from the water arises with a ministry, a specific role, in bringing about God s kingdom. If we were asked to purge English of Greek vocabulary, we would gain an insight into key ministries in our church. Bishop, from the Greek episkopos, would become simply overseer; priest, from the Greek presybter, would become elder; and deacon, from the Greek diakonos, would be servant. Each title stands in relationship to all the baptized, serving the community, helping it to be the Body of Christ. In our deepest tradition, each of these ordained ministries is attuned to help us become our best selves, to hunger and thirst for the coming of God s kingdom. The goal for each one of us is to be able to recognize the presence of Christ in worship and in service. Although only some of us are ordained to ministry, each of us is called to ministry. Rev. PAGE 5 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 22, 2016 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. - Mark 10 Eighth Week of Ordinary Time The week begins with Trinity Sunday, which always follows a week after Pentecost. It celebrates the unknowable relationship between the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit - and their loving support for us in our lives. I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. On Thursday, most of the world will celebrate The Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), on the traditional Thursday after Trinty Sunday. In the US, Thursday is the Memorial of Saint Philip Neri, Priest and The Body and Blood of Christ is celebrated next Sunday. The first readings this week are from the pastoral letters, The First Letter of Peter and The Letter of Jude. During the week, we resume reading Mark's Gospel where we left it when Lent began. It offers us stories about sacrificing part of ourselves. We hear of the Rich Young Man: Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. At that statement, his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Peter tells Jesus, We have given up everything and followed you. Jesus responds, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more. When the disciples squabble over who will sit in glory with Jesus, he tells them, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Bartimaeus, a blind man recognizes Jesus as Son of David and is healed. Bartimaeus follows Jesus. Jesus drives money changers out of the Temple saying, My house shall be called a house of prayer... but you have made it a den of thieves. We end the week with Jesus evading the trickery of the chief priests who ask him by what authority are you doing these things? In the US, Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Luke's gospel is the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. Most of the rest of the world celebrates the Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time and Luke's Gospel tells us about the healing of the Centurion's slave. Daily Prayer This Week: This is a week we can look at letting go -- of riches, honors, pride. In these Ordinary Time days we can hand it all over to Jesus and ask for the trust we need in our lives. We can hand over our fears and jealousy, our titles and our possessions - anything that has become too important in our lives can get in the way of how close we allow ourselves to be with Jesus. As we go through our week, in the smallest moments of the day, we can beg Jesus for the strength of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As we awaken in the morning, and in the everyday moments of our lives, an awareness of our desires before Jesus can change our attitudes toward these chores and see them as sacred moments of invitation from the God who loves us with such fire and compassion. Letting go, releasing, giving things up: it's a struggle for all of us. Perhaps we can sit for a moment with the rich young man. When he returned to Jesus looking for the easy way out, Jesus looked at him and loved him before he said anything else to him. Jesus understands our deepest fears and our motivations. But despite or maybe because of that, he looks at us and loves us, endlessly - not restricted in any way by our own selfishness or unwillingness to change. Dear Lord, you know how filled I am with fears. Let each moment of anxiety today be a reminder to open my life, my heart and my soul to the love and courage you offer me. I know that if only I could trust in you more, it would change my life. He went away sad, for he had many possessions! Let me turn these apprehensions over to you. I beg you to give me the wisdom and strength I need to trust more and to fear less. Teach me that it's OK to stop clinging to the fears I have known for so long and that I can embrace the freedom you offer me. Let me be less fear-full and more generous. PAGE 6 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 22, 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy May 22, 2016 The Most Holy Trinity The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connecting God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God s self-revelation as a life-giving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God s most important attributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as Merciful and Kind, believing divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding, eliminate all closed-minded disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimination. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US. AMEN Deacon Charlie s Corner Hi! Hope all is well with everyone this week. Well, many schools have already let out for Summer break, and in the weeks to come many more will be added to the list. There will be more traffic out during the day, so we need to be all the more alert in our driving. I can no longer drive, but my Chauffer (Janet) has said, she doesn t really enjoy driving, as she used to and I personally don t miss it at all. The challenges on the road today are many. You really have to be so alert because you don t know what some people might attempt to do in their driving skills or non-skills! So we ask the Lord to be with us every step of the way no matter where we go or what we do. We all need His protection in all walks of life. May Jesus watch over each and everyone of us, wherever we are going. Next weekend is our Memorial Day Holiday and many people will be traveling. May you all be safe and remember to take the Lord with you. And for those staying at home, may you be safe too. In our Gospel from John this week, I feel the last verse is the meat of the whole reading. Jesus said, Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that He will take from what is mine and declare it to you. For me this is the center of it all. Jesus gave over everything. His life that we may have eternal life, but it s our choice (isn t it?). It is true, the Lord has given us everything. We just have to live in faith and trust. Think about it, the Father (God) gave us the Son (Jesus) so that we may inherit Eternal Life! Their gift to us, the Holy Spirit shows us the way. Without Jesus Death and Resurrection we would be lost. So let us Praise and Thank Jesus for all He has done for us..amen! Happy Feast of The Most Holy Trinity. Walk with King Jesus and be a blessing, Deacon Charlie Prayer for the Week: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank You for welcoming me into Your circle of love. May I share Your peace with someone in my community today. Thought for the Week: When we keep our mind on God, His Spirit keeps our mind at peace.

PAGE 11 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 22, 2016 PIERWSZE CZYTANIE Prz 8,22-31 M¹droœæ zrodzona przed stworzeniem œwiata Czytanie z Ksiêgi Przys³ów To mówi M¹droœæ Bo a: Pan mnie stworzy³, swe arcydzie³o, przed swymi czynami, od dawna. Od wieków jestem stworzona, od pocz¹tku, zanim ziemia powsta³a. Jestem zrodzona, gdy jeszcze bezmiar wód nie istnia³ ani Ÿród³a, co wod¹ tryskaj¹, i zanim góry stanê³y. Poczêta jestem przed pagórkami, nim ziemiê i pola uczyni³, pocz¹tek py³u na ziemi. Gdy niebo umacnia³, z Nim by³am, gdy kreœli³ sklepienie nad bezmiarem wód, gdy w górze utwierdza³ ob³oki, gdy Ÿród³a wielkiej otch³ani umacnia³, gdy morzu stawia³ granice, by wody z brzegów nie wysz³y, gdy kreœli³ fundamenty pod ziemiê. Ja by³am przy Nim mistrzyni¹, rozkosz¹ Jego dzieñ po dniu, ca³y czas igraj¹c przed Nim, igraj¹c na okrêgu ziemi, znajduj¹c radoœæ przy synach ludzkich. Oto S³owo Bo e. Uczyni³eœ go niewiele mniejszym od anio³ów, CZYTANIA NA NIEDZIELÊ uwieñczy³eœ go czci¹ i chwa³¹. Gdy zaœ przyjdzie On, Duch Prawdy, doprowadzi was do ca³ej prawdy. Bo nie bêdzie mówi³ od siebie, ale powie wszystko, cokolwiek s³yszy, i oznajmi wam rzeczy przysz³e. On Mnie otoczy chwa³¹, poniewa z mojego weÿmie i wam oznajmi. Wszystko, co ma Ojciec, jest moje. Dlatego powiedzia³em, e z mojego bierze i wam objawi. Oto s³owo Pañskie.
