ASH WEDNESDAY ARCHDIOCESAN COLLECTION FOR PRIEST S RETIREMENT FUND On Ash Wednesday, March 9 th we will have a special collection at all Masses to support the Archdiocesan Priest s Retirement Fund. Archbishop Myers has authorized this collection as a way to ensure that this program, which provides a modest retirement benefit to priests who have served the Archdiocese faithfully for many decades, will continue to have adequate resources to meet the needs in the years ahead as more priests become eligible to retire from active ministry. How to Report Abuse The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence substantially, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 13, 2011 to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, June 19, 2011. *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. MATER DEI ACADEMY Principally Speaking Thanks to Home School Association members for making our Annual Auction a huge success. The auction committee worked very hard to assure that everyone had an enjoyable time filled with fun and fantastic prizes. The community support was greatly appreciated. As we begin to plan class trips for the Spring, please be reminded that all chaperones are required to have a Protecting God s Children (PGC) certificate and a background check through LexisNexis. Please plan in advance and complete the necessary requirements if you would like to chaperone. PGC classes can be taken at various locations and times. To access information please go to www.virtusonline.org. A copy of your certificate must then be placed on file in my office. A permission form to conduct the background check must be completed along with a packet of information from the Archdiocese related to code of conduct. Additionally, when multiple parents volunteer to chaperone; a random selection process will take place by the classroom teacher to fill the necessary allotment of chaperones. Please be reminded that the parking lot behind the Academy is for faculty and staff only. In the best interest of safety, students should not be picked up in the parking lot area. Annulment Information Evening An Annulment Information Evening is scheduled for Wednesday, March 16, 2011. A Canon lawyer from the Archdiocese of Newark will discuss the most recent theology, guidelines and requirements for obtaining a Church annulment. The information will be presented in terms that all can understand. A question and answer period will conclude the session. Pre-registration is not necessary. This evening of information will be held at St. Theresa s RC Church, (School Auditorium), 541 Washington Avenue, Kenilworth, at 7:30 PM. Shrove Tuesday Celebration The Queen of Peace Council of Knights of Columbus, located on the corner of Belmount Avenue and River Road in North Arlington, will be hosting its 5 th annual Shrove Tuesday celebration on March 8 th starting at 6:30 pm Shrove Tuesday, also known around the world as Fat Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday marks the last day before the beginning of Lent which begins the next day on Ash Wednesday. A selection of ethnic foods from around the world, including traditional pancakes, will be served. A short video on the history and background of Shrove Tuesday in the Christian calendar will be also presented. Tickets are $16.00 for adults, $13 for seniors & $6 for children 12 and under. PETER S PENCE COLLECTION FOR THE WORKS OF THE HOLY FATHER Next weekend our parish will participate in the Peter s Pence Collection for the works of the Holy Father. This collection enables the Holy Father to respond to requests for emergency funds from the most disadvantaged throughout the world. From real estate agents to developers, from mortgage bankers to members of the construction trades, the lack of home building has severely curtailed economic activity in all of these employment sectors. The questionable practices of bundling, repackaging, and trading mortgage assets by various financial institutions as well as outright fraud on the part of some buyers and sellers led to a banking crisis that threatened to swamp the financial industry and destroy it much like the house that was built on sand that is described in today's Gospel. Many smaller banks and credit unions, which continued to own the mortgages they wrote, found themselves in the enviable position of having solid assets. They were never in any danger of failing despite the buffets of the economic storm. For the most part, the financial institutions that avoided trouble during the crisis lived by strong values that had been inculcated into the fiber of their existence. The boards of directors of these institutions were not going to go out on a limb and try to find quick, easy money. They may not have been glamorous investments, but their worth was proven over time. These are the banks and credit unions that more easily survived. Holding on to solid values in life can help individuals survive as well. In the Gospel, Jesus talks about those who hear his words and then put them into practice. Taking the values that Jesus teaches and making them a part of everyday life ensures our connection to him. When we think or act with the values of Jesus in the forefront of our minds we build a firm foundation as a structure for our lives. Forgiveness, love, a strong faith, compassion toward others, patience, a desire for justice, mercy, and a spirit of prayer are strong foundation blocks for a holy life. 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc
Implementation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal - continue On the weekend of November 27, 2011, the English speaking Catholic Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers we use at Mass. This new translation will change many of the prayers said by the priest and the responses of the people. In our bulletin, there will be a special insert that begins to look at this new translation. Over the next few Sundays there will be a series of Questions and Answers regarding the implementation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal. Please take some time to read the special insert and the forthcoming questions and answers. They will help you to understand how and why these changes are occurring. OFFICE OF DIVINE WORSHIP Archdiocese of Newark 973.497.4345 Questions and Answers on the Mass Changescontinue 3. What s new or different about the revised translation? The style of the translation of the third edition is different. In accord with the rules for translation established by the Holy See, the revised translation follows the style of the original Latin texts more closely, including concrete images, repetition, parallelisms, and rhythm. The English used in the Mass texts is more formal and dignified in style. Where possible, the texts follow the language of Scripture and include many poetic images. In addition, the third edition contains prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and prayers for various needs and intentions, and some updated and revised rubrics (or instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. 4. What is the timeline for the approval and implementation of the Missal? After the Latin Missale Romanum was published in 2002, ICEL began its work of preparing a draft English translation of the text. ICEL presented the first section - the Order of Mass, which contains the fixed prayers of the Mass, including the people s parts - to the English speaking conferences of bishops in 2004. The USCCB approved the final version in 2006, and the Holy See confirmed this section in June 2008. The remaining sections were approved between 2007 and 2009. The USCCB completed its approval of the Missal in November 2009. The Holy See granted the final approval of the text in the spring of 2010. Cardinal Francis George, OMI, president of the USCCB, announced that parishes may begin using the revised translation on November 27, 2011. REFLEKSJE EWANGELICZNE Fundamentów nie widać O wartości domu w dużym stopniu decyduje solidność fundamentów. Ich zakładanie pochłania wiele pracy i pieniędzy, a na zewnątrz nie widać ani jednego, ani drugiego. Fundamenty są w ziemi. Początkowo się ją rozkopuje, a po założeniu fundamentów wyrównuje. Stąd przy wszystkich budowlach najbardziej niewdzięczną pracą są prace ziemne. Trud wznoszenia budowli na fundamencie można już podziwiać, on jest widoczny. Mądry budowniczy wie jednak, że nie wolno zabierać się do budowy ścian, skoro fundament jest niepewny. Całość pracy ulegnie bowiem zniszczeniu. Ten właśnie mądry sposób podejścia do budowy domu ma na uwadze Jezus, gdy kończąc Kazanie na Górze, porównuje słuchaczy do budujących. Jedni i drudzy budują dom. Tak łatwo przekonać się o słabości domów budowanych na piasku z pięknych haseł. Ewangelia wymaga długiego czasu i pracy przy fundamencie. To gwarancja sukcesu doczesnego i wiecznego. Kazanie na Górze winno być otwarte w mieszkaniu chrześcijanina, jak są otwarte plany na placu budowy, a każdy dzień winien rozpoczynać się od precyzyjnego ustalenia co, gdzie i jak dziś zostanie zrobione na budowie mego domu. Jeśli wskazania Jezusa zostaną dokładnie zachowane, dom ten będzie domem bezpiecznym, mocnym i pięknym.
